Agra: Indian Railways has issued a notice to the priest of Chamunda Devi temple at a platform of Rajamandi Railway Station saying that it is illegally built and if it is not removed, the railway station will have to be closed in view of safety of passengers.Anand Swarup, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Agra issued a notice stating, "If the illegal construction of 72 square meters temple (located at Rajamandi Railway Station) is not removed from the platform, then railway station can be closed in view of safety of passengers."The DRM said that the temple of Goddess Chamunda Devi is illegally built on platform number 1 at Rajamandi Railway Station."The temple of Chamunda Devi is situated at some part of Rajamandi Railway Station at platform number 1. Whose area is 1716 square meters, in which the temple building is built in 600 square meters. Its area of 72 square meters has been constructed on platform number one, which violates the schedule of dimensions of the railway, and is inappropriate from the point of view of security. The encroachment of 72 meters is to be vacated on priority. Due to this illegal construction, passengers face difficulty in getting on and off when the trains stop at the platform and it is not good in view of the security of the passengers," the notice reads. DMR in a notice further said that the railway has also received complaints from people in this regard."The biggest hurdle is regarding the speed of the trains. He informed that Rs 6 crore is being spent on improving the speed of trains on the Agra-Delhi route. The speed of the train is reduced to 30 km per hour due to the temple. Rajamandi station has to be expanded to increase the speed of trains. Encroachment is a barrier to this technically necessary expansion," the notice further reads.He further said that the notices have also been given to other unauthorized religious places like mosques, and this notice has been given giving priority to the convenience and safety of the passengers. "If there is any obstacle in the implementation of this decision, then in view of the safety of the passengers, the railway administration will be forced to consider closing the Raja Mandi station for passenger use," the notice further reads.Speaking to media persons, Anand Swarup said that the temple built at Rajamandi Railway Station is illegally constructed on railway land."The temple built at the station is built on the land of railway, but the temple committee is saying that the temple is very old. The temple will have to be removed from the station because the speed of the train coming from the Delhi side is very fast. We have invested a lot of money in our new project and the temple hampering it as it is built on the platform. If we have any problem in removing the temple, then we will have to consider closing the station for passengers," he added.However, the people associated with the temple are opposing the railway proceedings. There is also resentment among the devotees and Hindu organizations about displacing the temple.Virendra, the Mahant of the temple said, "We have received the notice for removal of the temple. The temple, which is 250 years old, was built before the railway line was laid. This railway line was laid during British rule. New Delhi: The railways has cancelled 42 passenger trains so far to facilitate coal freight movement in the wake of a power crisis in various parts of the country, causing inconvenience to people travelling to and from coal producing states such as Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.The South East Central Railway division that covers the coal producing regions has cancelled 34 passenger trains, while the Northern Railways, the division that receives coal for many power stations in the north, has cancelled eight trains.The Central Electricity Authority's daily coal stock report states that 56 of 165 thermal power stations are left with 10 per cent or less coal, and at least 26 have less than five per cent stock left.India's 70 percent electricity demand is fulfilled through coal.Some passengers services under the SECR like the Bilaspur-Bhopal train, which was suspended in March 28, will now remain in this status till May 3, while the MEMU between Maharashtra's Gondia and Odihsa's Jharsuguda stands cancelled from April 24 to May 23 and the Dongargarh-Raipur MEMU in Chhattisgarh from April 11 to May 24, according to official data. While the SECR has cancelled 22 mail or express trains and 12 passenger trains, the Northern Railways has cancelled four mail or express trains, and as many passenger services.Following the cancellations, the railways has raised the average daily loading of coal rakes to over 400 a day, the highest in the past five years, the data stated.Railway officials said that the national transporter has put 533 rakes for coal duty a day, 53 more than what was put into service last year. On Thursday, 1.62 million tonnes of coal was loaded in 427 rakes.A few days ago, the cancellations resulted in massive protests in Chhattisgarh, which falls in the SECR division, with Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel speaking to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, resulting in restoration of around six trains. State Congress chief Mohan Markam had staged a protest outside the office of the divisional railway manager of SECR's Raipur division over the cancellations.Officials in the know said that people are facing inconvenience and cited that the cancellation of trains like the Hatia-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Superfast Express had come as a big blow to cancer patients, who book tickets months in advance to go to Mumbai for treatment. There has been no official comment from the railway ministry on either the suspension or cancellation of services.Officials said that in total, the railways has cancelled 753 trips -- 363 of mail or express trains and 390 of passenger trains -- in the SCER and the NR railway zones. To ensure transparency in supply, the railways has also imposed loading restrictions for rails and parcels on select routes.—PTI

Roorkee: The Superintendent of Roorkee Railway Station has received a letter threatening to blow up several railway stations across Uttarakhand, said police on Monday.The letter, which was received on the evening of May 7, threatens to blow up six railway stations namely Laksar, Najibabad, Dehradun, Roorkee, Rishikesh and Haridwar.The sender of the letter described himself as the area commander of the terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)."Roorkee Railway Station Superintendent received a letter on the evening of May 7 threatening to blow up 6 railway stations namely, Laksar, Najibabad, Dehradun, Roorkee, Rishikesh, and Haridwar, by posing as Salim Ansari, JeM Area Commander," said Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Kumar.However, the police said a mentally disturbed person is sending such threat letters for the last 20 years."A mentally disturbed person is sending such threat letters for the last 20 years. New Delhi: To make train journey more comfortable for passengers travelling with infants, the railways has fitted foldable "baby berths" on the side of lower main berths of the Lucknow Mail as part of a pilot project.Based on the feedback of passengers on the "new product", plans will be drawn to expand the concept to other trains, officials said.The "baby berth", which are hinged to the lower main berths, can be folded and secured with a stopper when not in use. It has been is aligned the main berth.On the Lucknow Mail, two "baby berths" of 770 mm in length, 255 mm in width and 76.2 mm in height were fitted to 12 and 60 main berths of the second cabins on both ends of coaches on April 27."This has been done on a trial basis and will be expanded once we get positive feedback from passengers. Once we try it out more and record the feedbacks, we will put the necessary details on CRIS (Centre for Railway Information Systems) where it can be booked on request," an official of the Northern Railway said."The (booking) system will be like the one we currently use to offer senior citizens lower berths. So, once, a passenger says yes to travelling with a child, we will offer the berth to them. However, it is now at a nascent stage," the official said.Currently, there is no mechanism to book the lower berth for women who are travelling with infants—PTI

Dehradun: The police have intensified inspections of railway and bus stations across Uttarakhand after a letter threatening to blow up six railway stations in the state was received recently, officials said on Tuesday.The letter was sent to the superintendent of Roorkee railway station on Saturday.The letter, which was written by a man who introduced himself as the commander of Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed, threatened to blow up Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Najibabad, Laksar and Roorkee railway stations, officials said.Written in poor Hindi, it also threatened to blow up Mansa Devi and Chandi Devi temples in Haridwar, an official said requesting anonymity. Though it appears to be a hoax, as similar letters have been received by authorities in the past, nothing is being left to chance as the Char Dham yatra is underway, Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar said.All precautionary measures are being taken, he said. New Delhi: Amid reports of a shortage of coal supplies at power plants, Railway Ministry on Wednesday said it has constantly ramped up coal loading for powerhouses across the country.The Railways is fully committed to lifting all the domestic coal that is brought to sidings/ good sheds by the coal companies and imported coal brought to port by the power generating companies, the Ministry said in a statement. In May 2022, the availability of rakes for the power sector increased to an average of 472 rakes per day.Both coal companies and Railways have envisaged to jointly ensure per day coal loading of 415 rakes of domestic coal and 30 rakes of imported coal to the power sector.'In the current month, loading of domestic coal for power house has been average of 409 rakes per day," the statement said. There has been an issue of frequent strike in coal-bearing areas of Odisha which has impacted coal evacuation, especially in Talcher area.However, railways have kept 60 surplus empty rakes at a pan-India level to maximise coal loading for the power sector, the ministry said. The statement said various operational efficiency measures have been taken to expedite the evacuation of coal rakes."Coaching trains have been cancelled across India to allow faster movement of coal rakes and easing of congested sections." The importance of the seamless and timely movement of coal rakes to various power plants has been emphasised.Detention of coal rakes for each activity at loading/unloading points and en-route movement are being monitored by divisional team at field level, the ministry said. It said that running of long hauls and convoy rakes in congested routes have been augmented.Additional 100 rakes will be mobilised for coal loading in the current financial year which would further improve the rake availability for the power sector, the statement said. New Delhi: CPI MP Binoy Viswam has requested Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to restore the senior citizen concession in trains which has remained suspended since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic in India. In the letter, he said crores of senior citizens across the country have been affected by the railway's decision to withdraw the concessions given to them. While the decision was made in light of Covid, it has not been reviewed despite repeated demands of senior citizens as the country opened up once again after the pandemic, Viswam said.The Left leader pointed out that the Indian Railways was established with the primary purpose of providing the citizens of India with an economical and efficient mode of transport. Over the years, over 50 categories of citizens, including seniors, were afforded concessions to make their travel affordable, he said. ''However, with the onset of the Covid pandemic, these concessions were halted in the name of safety and prevention, with the implicit belief that they would resume after the pandemic abated and the country opened up again. ''Unfortunately, the government has used the Covid pandemic to permanently remove these concessions, much to the detriment of the people of India,'' Viswam said.He also said that with over 7 crore senior citizens using the Railways between March 2020-2022, the impact of the withdrawal of concessions was ''significant.'' ''In light of this, I appeal to you to restore the concession for senior citizens in the Railways. As many senior citizens are not in a position to pay the full ticket fee, the lack of concessions causes them great hardship. ''Having served our country during their working life, it is important that we ensure that these citizens are afforded dignity and respect in their retired life,'' the CPI MP said.—PTI

Kolkata: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Tuesday urged West Bengal government 'to rise above politics' on the issue of commissioning welfare projects for the poor and claimed that not a single resident of the state has got the benefit of Centre's Ayushman Bharat Yojana.Vaishnaw, who was speaking at the 'Garib Kalyan Sammelan' here as part of similar meets across the country, also said that majority of the farmers of the state are yet to get the benefits PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana."Why has Ayushman Bharat Yojana not been implemented till now in Bengal? Why are most of the poor farmers of the state not getting the money channeled into their Jandhan accounts despite being eligible? The West Bengal government owes an explanation on these issues," Vaishnaw said."There can be different governments in different states ruled by different political parties. But that should not come in the way of improving the condition of the poor and needy. We are all Indians, there should not be any division," he said.Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is a national public health insurance fund of the Government of India that aims to provide free access to health insurance coverage for low income earners in the country. It aims to cover over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families, approximately 50 crore beneficiaries, providing coverage upto Rs five lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. Benefiociary states have to bear 40 per cent of the expense for it.The scheme is yet to be implemented in West Bengal, which had officially launched its smart card based 'Swasthya Sathi' scheme in December, 2016. The 'Swasthya Sathi' scheme is a basic health cover for secondary and tertiary care up to Rs five lakh per annum per family and covers all pre-existing diseases.The entire premium is borne by the West Bengal government and no contribution is taken from the beneficiary. There is no cap on the family size and parents of both the spouse and all dependent physically challenged persons in the family are covered under the scheme.The rail minister said while 30 crore families has been provided affordable housing units in the country under the PM Awas Yojana, in Bengal only 42 lakh were allotted houses under the project.He asked those who have not got the benefit of the project to take up the matter with the state. "Please protest if you are deprived."He claimed that Modi always supported Bengal and had sanctioned Rs 3700 crore for relief after Cyclone Amphan.Coming to the Railways allocation in the state, he said the Centre had alloted a record Rs 10000 crore for railway projects in Bengal."If the state government makes land available, we will fastrack the projects," he added.The PM addressed the gathering virtually from Shimla as similar programmes were held across the country.Vaishnaw later told reporters that Railways will undertake a feasibility study for introducing a goods train with refrigerated coaches to carry perishable food items like fish and meat."We will have to first undertake a feasibility study on whether there can be refrigerated service to carry fish and similar products. We will decide on the study in two months' time," he added.Asked to comment on the repeated assertions by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that the Centre is renaming West Bengal's projects as its own and withholding the state's dues, Vaishnaw said "While I contest such claims, I would again request the state to work in synergy with Centre and rise above politics for quick execution of welfare projects which will benefit the people of the state."State Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who was also present at the programme, said while 73,000 farmers in the state were eligible for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, West Bengal has sent names of only 30,000 as beneficiaries."The state is depriving its own people from the Central project," he claimed.—PTI

Chennai: A 22-year-old youth, who had stabbed a schoolgirl for rejecting his love request, was found dead on a railway track at Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Kesavan had stabbed the Class 11 girl near Tiruchi railway station in broad daylight on Tuesday.The girl suffered 14 stab injuries and is battling for life at Tiruchi government medical college hospital. Kesavan was arrested in a Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) case for having kidnapped the same girl in 2021. Police said that Kesavan had just come out of jail after serving prison term in the case.According to Manaparai police that is investigating the case, the accused had proposed to the girl while she was going to a relative's home. When she spurned his request, an infuriated Kesavan stabbed her recklessly. The man fled the spot immediately after the gruesome act. Police were tracing Kesavan from Tuesday onwards and found his body at the railway track near Manaparai, Tiruchi. A case has been registered and an investigation launched.—IANS

New Delhi: Railway Protection Force (RPF) and frontline railway staff rescued 150 girls and women from becoming the victims of human trafficking during the Force's pan-India Operation 'Mahila Suraksha' conducted between May 3 and 31. A total of 7000 persons were arrested for travelling unauthorizedly in the coaches reserved for women, officials said.With an objective of providing enhanced safety and security to lady passengers travelling by trains for their entire journey a pan India initiative "Meri Saheli" has also been operational. 283 teams (covering 223 stations) of trained 'Mahila' (women) officers and personnel with an average total deployment of 1125 lady RPF personnel per day, are deployed across the Indian railways who interacted with more than 2,25,000 women during this period and provided them end to end security, informed officials. "Train escort duties with a mixed composition of male and female RPF personnel were also widely deployed during this period. Mixed escort duties commenced a few months back and are getting positive feedback," informed the railway officials.To educate the rail users regarding their safety and Dos &amp; Don'ts during their journey, 5742 awareness campaigns were organized.During this month-long operation, RPF personnel risking their own life saved the life of 10 ladies who had slipped while boarding/ deboarding the moving train and were likely to get run over by the moving train. "Indian Railways is keen and determined to continue to enhance women's security cover over the railway network," informed the department in an official release. The operation 'Mahila Suraksha 'was aimed at ensuring the safe and secure travel of women over the Indian railways.—ANI

Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) would invest over Rs 95,261 crore to execute 21 projects including connecting the state capitals of three northeastern states — Manipur, Mizoram and Meghalaya by 2023, and Nagaland capital Kohima by 2026, an official said on Friday. Assam’s main city of Guwahati (adjoining capital Dispur), Tripura capital Agartala, and Arunachal Pradesh’s Naharlagun (adjacent to capital city Itanagar) are already connected with the railway network. NFR’s Chief Public Relations Officer Sabyasachi De on Friday said with the vision to connect the remaining state capitals and also to increase the line capacity in the region, funds to the tune of Rs 51,787 crore have already been allocated.The average fund allocation per year for the northeastern region in the last eight years is 254 per cent more than the yearly average fund allocation in 2009-14. “While the work for laying new broad gauge railway tracks are underway to connect the Imphal and Aizawl, the work of laying new lines to connect Shillong would not face much hurdles as there are no big mountains in between Guwahati and Shillong,” De told IANS. He said the government has put all its efforts to improve the rail connectivity in the northeast. “The northeastern region of the country has received a significant infrastructure boost in the railway sector in the last eight years (2014-2022). Between 2014 and 2022, a total of 893.82 km of track have been converted to broad gauge, 386.84 km new lines added, 356.41 km double lines commissioned and survey of 1,578 km new lines were completed,” he added.The CPRO said that an investment of Rs 95,261.65 crore is expected in the region to complete 21 projects, which include linking of the remaining state capitals of the region. These ongoing projects have created a large number of jobs in the region for gainful employment of locals and have also transformed the socio-economic landscape of the region. The commissioning of the Bogibeel bridge in 2018 was a moment of pride for this region, the official said adding that this longest rail-cum-road bridge reduced the journey distance from eastern Assam to Delhi by 170 kms and fulfilled a long time strategic need for rail connectivity across the mighty Brahmaputra in Assam. Apart from the new line and doubling work, efforts have also been made to increase railway safety in the region. The NFR has eliminated all unmanned level crossing gates in the region. Safer, more reliable and more comfortable LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches have been introduced in 40 pairs of trains from the northeast.The NFR official said that the government firmly believes that northeast would be the new growth engine of India and is working in the direction to make this a reality. The NFR is the nodal agency of the Rs 1,000 crore Agartala (India)-Akhaura (Bangladesh) railway project, which was finalised in January 2010 when Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met then Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during her visit to New Delhi. Of the 12.24 km India-Bangladesh new railway line, 5.46 km railway track is being laid in India (on the outskirts of the capital city Agartala), and 6.78 km railway line would be placed on the Bangladesh side. Once the Agartala-Akhaura railway project is commissioned, people of the northeastern states, especially Tripura, can go to Kolkata by rail saving 22 hours of travel time. Currently, the people of the region, especially those in Tripura and its adjoining areas, go to Kolkata via Guwahati by rail, spending more than 38 hours. The NFR, one among the 17 railway zones in India, operates fully and partially in six of the eight northeastern states, excluding Meghalaya and Sikkim, and in seven districts of West Bengal and five districts of north Bihar.—IANS

Lucknow: The CBI on Saturday said it has arrested an officer of the Lucknow division of the Northern Railways for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 80,000.Deputy Chief Materials Manager (carriage and wagons) Alok Mishra was arrested on Friday evening along with two others who were identified as Avanish Mishra and Manjit Singh, the Central Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.A case has been registered against the three arrested accused, unidentified public servants and private persons in the matter, it said.According to the FIR, the said public servant was demanding and accepting illegal gratification from contractors for awarding contracts and clearing bills, etc. Alok Mishra allegedly directed a private person to bring cash for clearing the pending bills of another person amounting to Rs 70 lakh.CBI officials laid a trap and caught Alok Mishra when he was receiving the bribe of Rs 80,000.Searches were conducted in connection with the case at various places in Lucknow. So far, cash worth Rs 32,10,000 has been recovered from the residence of Alok Mishra, the CBI said."Incriminating documents and digital devices from the residence of the deputy CMM Mishra were also recovered," it said.The agency said the arrested accused will be presented before a competent court.—PTI

New Delhi: Indian Railways on Monday said it has decided to double the number of online tickets that can be booked per user ID through the IRCTC website and app. To facilitate passengers, Indian Railways has decided to increase the limit of booking a maximum of six tickets in a month to 12 tickets by a user ID, which is not Aadhaar linked.For the user ID which is Aadhaar linked, the limit for booking the number of tickets per user ID has been increased to 24 tickets in a month from the earlier 12 tickets in a month. The condition for this category is that the user ID should be Aadhaar linked and one of the passengers on the ticket to be booked should be verifiable through Aadhaar. At present, maximum of six tickets in a month can be booked online on the IRCTC website/app by a user ID, which is not Aadhaar linked and maximum 12 tickets in a month can be booked by a user ID which is Aadhaar linked and that one of the passengers in the ticket to be booked is verifiable through Aadhaar, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Railways.—ANI

Shreyas completed the event in 13 hrs 26 mins on 5th&nbsp;June 2022, in Hamburg, Germany. The finishers of the event are popularly known as ‘IRONMAN’ befitting the mental and physical strength the event demands. The event started with 3.8km Swim at 6:30am in the chilly waters of the Hamburg lake which was&nbsp;followed by 180 km long cycling in the country side and ended with a full marathon of 42.2kms.

Ranchi: Former Bihar Chief Minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was fined Rs 6,000 in a 13-year-old poll code violation case on Wednesday by a special court in Jharkhand's Palamu. Lalu Prasad Yadav had appeared before the special MP, MLA court in connection with a model code of conduct violation case of 2009. "After hearing the petition of Former Bihar CM and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aninews.in/topic/rjd-chief-lalu-prasad-yadav" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); background-color: transparent;">RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav</a>, the Court has imposed a fine of Rs 6000 on him. The case has been disposed and he is free of charges now. He does not need to come here again," said Advocate Dhirendra Kumar Singh, Lalu Prasad Yadav's lawyer.Last month, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed FIR in the 'land for railway job' case named Lalu Yadav, his wife, daughters and several others as accused in the case. The CBI conducted searches at 17 locations belonging to Lalu Yadav and his family members in Delhi and Bihar. The alleged scam took place when Yadav was Railway Minister between 2004 to 2009.Meanwhile, Lalu Yadav has filed an application at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Ranchi seeking the release of his passport for renewal as he has to go abroad for a kidney transplant. "Lalu Yadav will go abroad, most likely to Singapore, for a kidney transplant. Process for an appointment with the doctor over there is underway. Meanwhile, the application has been filed in court so that passport can be renewed. The renewed passport will be submitted again to the court," Prabhat Kumar, Yadav's lawyer told.—ANI

Gondia: A tiger was found dead with injuries marks near a railway track in Maharashtra's Gondia district on Saturday, an official from the forest department said.A railway trackman spotted the carcass near the tracks between Vadegaon and Wadsa in the morning and the forest department was alerted, he said.The area where the big cat was found falls in Korambhi beat of Arjuni Morgaon forest range, assistant conservator of forest (ACF) Dada Raut said.While there were injury marks on face, legs and tail of the tiger, all body parts were intact, he said, adding that it is suspected that the big cat may have been hit by a train.Honourary wildlife warden Mukund Dhurwe said the accident is likely to have taken place on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday.The carcass was disposed of as per the standard operating procedure of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), it was stated.—PTI

Dr. MORI Masafumi, Special Adviser to Prime Minister of Japan co-chaired the meeting from Japanese side.During the meeting, presentation and video film were shown regarding the progress of the project. Further, issues related to funding, contracts and execution were discussed for mutual resolution and targeted commissioning of the project.Joint Committee meeting between Government of India and Government of Japan is the highest consultative body for taking ahead projects of mutual interests and benefits. Japanese Government is committed to fund the MAHSR projects with a soft loan and technical and financial cooperation. The meeting was fruitful and productive and finalized strategic issues for early completion of the project. Both sides agreed to work to Hon’ble PM’s view of One Project- One team in the overall interest of the project.

Mumbai: Mumbai and its adjoining areas witnessed heavy showers on Tuesday, resulting in water-logging at a number of places including railway tracks, which slowed the movement of trains and vehicles on roads.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rain in Mumbai and its suburbs over the next 24 hours, with a possibility of very heavy showers at isolated places, civic officials said.The island city (south Mumbai) received an average 95.81 mm rainfall in the 24 hour period ending at 8 am on Tuesday, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 115.09 mm and 116.73 mm rainfall, respectively, during the same period, they said.Between 8 am and 11.30 am on Tuesday, the island city received an average 41 mm rainfall, while the eastern and western suburbs got 85 mm and 55 mm showers, respectively, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said.The local train services, considered as the lifeline of Mumbai, were affected mainly on the main and harbour corridors of the Central Railway due to water- logging on tracks near Kurla, slowing down train movement, rail sources said.&nbsp;There was also bunching of trains heading towards the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai on the main line, they said. There was inundation on tracks in Sion, Kurla, Tilak Nagar and Wadala areas of the Central Railway route, the Central Railway's chief public relations officer Shivaji Sutar said. "There is water in tracks at some locations...trains are being run at a cautious speed and we are continuously monitoring the situation," he said.Some commuters also complained about heavy-water logging in some subways in Panvel, Khandeshwar and Mansarovar stations on the Harbour line in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, forcing them to wade through ankle-deep water. Over 75 lakh commuters from Mumbai and neighbouring districts travel in local trains every day. The BEST undertaking, which provides public bus services in Mumbai and neighbouring cities, was forced to divert its buses via alternate routes, due to inundation in Sion, Chembur, Bandra, Air India Colony, Kurla and few other locations, an official said. According to the Mumbai traffic police, a road near the Sadhna High School in Sion area of central Mumbai was closed due to water-logging up to 1.5 feet. The traffic was diverted through the Sion junction, they said.There was also water-logging of up to one feet near the Santacruz railway station, resulting in slow vehicular movement, police said. The vehicular movement was slow at Dadar TT, Parel TT, Sakkar Panchayat Chowk, Wadala in central Mumbai, Tembi bridge in Chembur, and near the Mankhurd railway station due to water rising up to one to two feet, they said. Traffic police personnel were deployed at various locations to avoid vehicular congestion due to the heavy rains, an official said. Citizens also complained of water-logging at the Gandhi Market, areas in Kurla and Dharavi, resulting in problems for motorists and pedestrians. Civic officials were seen trying to convey to the media how quickly the rain water receded at some inundation-prone spots like the Hindmata and Gandhi Market. Between 8 am and 11.30 am on Tuesday, the M-west ward in Mumbai received 106 mm rainfall, the M-east ward recorded 98 mm, the G-south ward got 88 mm rain, the N-ward got 92 mm and the F-south ward received 79 mm rain, according to the BMC.The IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rain in neighbouring Thane district for the next few days. On Monday, the IMD had issued a 'yellow alert' for Mumbai and Thane, predicting heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places over the next five days.—PTI
