Peshawar: Muhammad Azam Khan, a former bureaucrat, was sworn in as the caretaker chief minister of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province during a ceremony that took place here on Saturday.
Khan took the oath of office from the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Haji Ghulam Ali, after his selection was finalised following discussions between outgoing Chief Minister Mahmood Khan and leader of the Opposition Akram Khan Durrani.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Governor House in Peshawar and was by civil and military officials.  Earlier on Saturday, Ali formally named Khan as the caretaker chief minister of the province in the current set-up.—Inputs from Agencies

Islamabad: At least 16 people were killed and four others injured in an exchange of fire between two rival groups in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred late Monday night over the demarcation of a coal mine disputed between two groups in Darra Adam Khel tribal area of Kohat district, police officials told Xinhua news agency.

The police said that the firing took place due to a long-standing dispute between the two tribal groups, and that several sessions of Jirga, a local tribal court, had been held to reconcile the rival tribes.

However, the groups turned violent when they faced each other while working in the coal mine earlier on Monday.

Following the incident, the police and rescue teams immediately rushed to the site and shifted the victims to a nearby hospital, according to the local media.

The police have registered a case against the culprits and started investigations.

Law enforcement agencies have taken control of the disputed coal mine, said the police, adding that some offenders fled the scene after firing, and a search operation is underway to nab them. IANS

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa [Pakistan]: Nine Pakistan soldiers have been killed and five others were injured in a suicide attack on a military convoy in Jani Khel general area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Bannu district, Dawn reported citing the army’s media affairs wing. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a “motorcycle-borne suicide bomber exploded himself on a military convoy”.
“Resultantly, nine soldiers including Naib Subedar Sanobar Ali embraced shahadat, while five soldiers were injured,” the ISPR said, as reported by Dawn, a Pakistani English-language newspaper. The ISPR also said that the area had been cordoned off by security forces and action was being taken to eliminate the terrorists. “The security forces of Pakistan are determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve,” the statement added.
Condemning the attack, Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has expressed grief over the death of the soldiers. “Heartbroken by the loss of 9 valiant soldiers in Bannu Division, KP, to a cowardly terrorist act that injured many," Kakar posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. Since the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) ceasefire with the government ended last November, Pakistan has seen an increase in terrorist activity, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, as reported by Dawn. Six soldiers were killed on August 22 during a gun battle in the South Waziristan district, according to information released last week by the military's media wing. During separate military operations in the Balochistan areas of Zhob and Sui, as many as 12 Pakistani Army troops were killed. This was the biggest single-day death toll from terrorist assaults that the military has seen. Prior to this, 10 soldiers died in a "fire raid" in the Kech area of Balochistan in February 2022. According to a report published in July by the think tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, the country saw an alarming spike in terror and suicide attacks in the first half of this year, which claimed the lives of 389 individuals, Dawn reported.

Peshawar: Multiple suicide bombers stormed a police station in Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, killing at least six security personnel and injuring 16 others, authorities said.
The suicide bombers stormed the security compound of the Daraban police station of the unruly Dera Ismail Khan district bordering the South Waziristan tribal district.  The terrorists rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the building of the police station, which was followed by a mortar attack.
In an exchange of fire between the security forces and the attackers which followed the attack, at least six security personnel were killed and 16 injured, police said.  All the attackers were killed by the security forces while fresh contingents of police were rushed to the site, and a subsequent search operation was launched, official sources said.  A relatively unknown militant organisation, Tehrik-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP), claimed responsibility for the attack. The terror organisation has been behind some major attacks in Pakistan.  Its spokesperson, Mullah Qasim, termed the attack a suicide mission (Fidayein).  An emergency was declared in district hospitals while all schools and colleges were closed due to the attack.

Nonetheless, Islamist militants, including factions of the Pakistan Taliban, have previously executed similar attacks, targeting both polio vaccination workers and the officers safeguarding them, adding to a history of tragic violence.

Peshawar: At least three militants and a police officer were killed during a gunfight following an attack on a police mobile van in the restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.
An Additional SHO was killed when unknown militants opened fire at a van on patrolling duty, leading to a gunfight between the police and the attackers for over an hour in the Darazinda area of Dera Ismail Khan district bordering South Waziristan, police said.
Three attackers were gunned down during the fighting, the police said.  Heavy contingents of police rushed to the site to control the situation, the police said.  An investigation has been opened into the incident and the police have launched an operation to trace the assailants.

Peshawar: At least two people were killed and 22 others injured when a suicide bomber rammed a vehicle laden with explosives against a convoy of the security forces in Pakistan's restive northwest region on Thursday, police said.
The incident happened in the Dera Ismail Khan district of the country's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province when the security convoy was on the move from one part of the district to another.  "In the suicide blast, at least 2 people were killed and 22 others injured. The two deceased are believed to be from the Army. However, it is not confirmed yet," said a senior police officer.
The injured have been shifted immediately to a nearby hospital.

 The security forces and the police have rushed to the site and blocked the main Tank-Dera Ismail Khan road for all kinds of traffic.  An official of the Bomb Disposal Squad said 'we are determining the quantity of the explosives used in the suicide hit'.  The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province is a very restive state and attacks on security forces occur very often.  Last week, an armed group attacked a military post in northwestern Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan using a vehicle laden with explosives as well as suicide bombs, killing seven security force members.  In December last year, a total of 23 soldiers were killed when militants linked to a Pakistani Taliban affiliate rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a security forces' post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Peshawar: At least 12 people were killed in two separate incidents in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said on Friday.
Eight people of a family, including five women and two children, were killed when a pickup truck they were travelling in skidded off a mountainous road allegedly due to a brake failure in Buner district, police said.
The driver purportedly lost control of the vehicle after the brake failed while navigating a sharp turn in the mountainous terrain. A rescue team along with the help of locals retrieved the bodies from the accident site, they said.  In the other incident, four miners of a family were killed when a coal mine suddenly collapsed in the tribal Kurram district.  A rescue team and local volunteers retrieved the bodies from the mine and shifted them to a nearby hospital. The deceased coal miners belong to the Swat district. The dead include a father and son and two brothers.
