Lucknow: A woman employee of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), living in the colony on campus in Lucknow's Jankipuram police station area, was found dead under mysterious circumstances.Her husband has gone missing and is being tracked by police.The deceased, identified as Varsha Singh, 28, was a technical officer in the neuro-science department of the institute and lived in a flat in the colony. Her husband Vishveshwar Singh is an agent in an insurance company.ACP, Aliganj, Syed Ali Abbas, said that as per Vishveshwar came out of their flat on Monday night, carrying Varsha in arms and screaming for help."Their neighbour, Akhilesh Kumar rushed to help, took out his car and drove the couple to the nearest private hospital where doctors asked them to take her to an advanced government hospital like KGMU for better treatment.""Vishveshwar asked Akhilesh to drive back home first as he had to collect some things and then take Varsha to the hospital," the ACP said.When Akhilesh drove back to the colony, Vishveshwar opened the door and fled.Akhilesh then informed police that rushed to the spot and found the woman lying dead in Akhilesh's car.Varsha Singh either committed suicide by hanging herself or was strangulated by her husband who fled after her death fearing police action, said the police official.The colony residents told the police that Varsha and Vishveshwar used to have frequent fights and that she may have hanged herself or was strangulated.Police officials have informed Varsha's family about her demise and have sent the body for post mortem."We are examining whether the injury on her neck was caused due to strangulation or by hanging," said ADCP, North Zone, Prachi Singh.Officials said the exact sequence of incidents would be known after Vishveshwar is arrested and interrogated.Varsha, who belongs to Mau district, was employed in the neuro-science department of the institute for the last three years.&nbsp;—IANS

Gurugram: A man was arrested for allegedly raping and blackmailing a woman by using her objectionable pictures and videos here, police said on Tuesday. The 30-year-old woman, who is married, in her complaint alleged that the accused, Yoginder alias Kala, a resident of Loni border in Ghaziabad, sent her a WhatsApp message around a year ago and they later became friends.Around one and half months ago, he asked her to place a video call while she was bathing and made a video clip of it, the woman said in her complaint. He used the video to threaten and rape her on different occasions, police said. The survivor narrated her ordeal to her sister who took her to Badshahpur police station and lodged a complaint against Yoginder, they said. On Monday, he called her to a hotel where police nabbed him, they said. An FIR has been registered against Yoginder under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections that deal with rape, voyeurism, stalking and criminal intimidation, police said. The accused, who works as a helper at a company in Ghaziabad, confessed to the crime, Station House Officer (SHO) Badshahpur Dinkar Yadav said.“He was not known to the victim but got in touch with her through WhatsApp and later exploited her. We produced him before a city court today which sent him to judicial custody,” the SHO said on Tuesday.—PTI

New Delhi: The Kerala high court on Tuesday declined to interfere with the decision of a Christian woman to marry a Muslim leader of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, a decision which stirred a political storm in the state after her relatives alleged "love jihad", as she categorically told the court that she has not been illegally detained and she was not interested in speaking to her family at present.A bench of Justices V G Arun and C S Sudha, after interacting with the woman, Jyotsna Mary Joseph, said, "She has categorically stated she has decided to marry Shejin out of her own free will and not under any compulsion."She has also stated that as of now she was not interested in interacting with her parents or family and will do so at a later stage," the court noted in its order.It also told the woman's family that she has said she intended to visit them after her marriage, for which an application under the Special Marriage Act has been moved and is pending consideration, and not before that.The bench told the family that while it understands their concerns, their daughter was a 26-year-old woman, who was a nurse in Saudi Arabia, and capable of making her own decisions."She has taken a decision and she is not deviating from it. It is her will and pleasure. She is not willing to speak to her parents now, so how can we compel her to do so," it said.The woman's father, Joseph, had moved a habeas corpus plea alleging that his daughter had been illegally detained and seeking directions to the police to produce her before him.He had also told news channels that since the day his daughter left her home, she has not spoken to any of them and therefore, he believed that she was being restrained against her will by the DYFI leader.Joseph had also said that he lacked faith in the Kerala police to look into the matter and wanted an agency from outside the state, like the CBI or NIA, to investigate what had happened.The interfaith relationship stirred up a political storm after the woman's relatives alleged "love jihad", with a senior Left party leader supporting the charge, only to retract his statement later.The CPI-M, thereafter, made it clear that there was nothing unnatural in interfaith marriages and the campaign of 'love jihad' was a creation of RSS and Sangh Parivar. Dakshina Kannada (Karnataka): In a horrifying incident, a 35-year-old tribal woman was assaulted and stripped in public by a group of people in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district, police said on Monday. The Karnataka Police have lodged an FIR against eight persons in connection with the incident which happened on April 19 in Alake village. A land dispute is said to be the reason behind the incident. After receiving the complaint, eight persons were booked, who have been identified as Sandeep, Santhosh, Gulabi, Kusuma, Lokaiah, Anil, Lalitha and Channakeshava. The police said the victim and her elder sister stayed in the shelter on a piece of land allotted to them by the government under Section 94C of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act, 1964. The accused were against the grant of land to the women and even opposed the revenue officers intervention regarding the dispute. After the officers left, the accused assaulted the women. The victim had rushed to rescue her elder sister who was being attacked by the accused persons. The police said that the victim's mother had also been attacked earlier. The public, including the Gram Panchayat member remained mute spectators when the accused were assaulting the woman and disrobing the victim. The accused shot a video of the attack and then made it viral on social media. The police have booked a case of unlawful assembly, rioting, causing hurt, intentionally hurting and use of force on a woman with the intention of disrobing the woman. Further investigation is on.

They allegedly took the victim to an isolated place and committed the crime. When I reached home, she told me she was raped by two and one of them stabbed her," said the complaint.The victim is not fit for giving statement, police said, adding that on the basis of her husband's complaint, an FIR was registered against two persons under IPC sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), 324 (grievously hurt), and 34 (common intention) on Tuesday.Police said they have nabbed one of the accused, Anil Thakur, a native of Bihar, and the probe is underway."We have arrested one of the accused and are interrogating him," Gurugram Police Commissioner Kala Ramachandran told—PTI

Wasps prevented a suicide attempt by a woman in Kerala's coastal district of Alappuzha a day ago.The woman on Monday evening had climbed a BSNL mobile tower in Kayamkulam here threatening to jump off it if her baby was not returned by her husband.Attempts by the police and the fire force personnel to talk her out of it did not fructify and that is when nature intervened.Visuals of the incident on TV channels showed that as the woman was busy climbing to the top of the mobile tower, she disturbed a wasp nest there and predictably, sensing a threat to them, the wasps swarmed around her with some stinging her.Panicked and stung, the woman abandoned her suicide attempt and started to rapidly climb down the ladder on the side of the tower, screaming all the way as the wasps swarmed around her.As she neared the bottom, she jumped the last few feet into the rescue net being held at the base of the tower by the fire force personnel.The rescue personnel were heard saying in the video that if not for the wasps, the woman would not have come down.An officer from Kayamkulam police station said the woman, a native of Tamil Nadu, was hospitalized after the incident and was under observation.Her health condition was stable, he further said and added that police have not yet been able to contact her husband or any of her relatives as they have been unable to get these details from her till now.—PTI

They had an old enmity. Both of their husband's are daily wage worker, police said said.On the day of incident, when both the women were quarrelling near their residence, Arzu came and intervened. He abused Praveen and stabbed her with a knife, police said.According to the police, the fight started over Arzu's father questioning Parveen's husband on why he did not get him some labour-related work.Meanwhile, Md. Sameer along with his three friends were passing by the street when the Class XII student witnessed the brawl and intervened, a senior police officer said.He was also abused by Arzu when he questioned and objected to the ongoing altercation. But angry Arzu, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol wiped out the same knife and stabbed Sameer, he added.Victim Sameer succumbed to injuries while the injured woman is getting treated at the hospital and is stated to be stable, police said.Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said "We have registered a case under section 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. He then made her smell some substance after which she went unconscious and then he allegedly raped her, police said citing the FIR.Superintendent of Police (City) Sanjay Kumar said the woman has also alleged that Amir's family members were pressuring her to convert and get married to him.The accused are absconding, the SP said, adding efforts are being made to nab them.The survivor has been sent for medical examination, Kumar said.—PTI

Noida:&nbsp;A married woman, accused of killing her alleged lover with the help of her husband in February, has been arrested by the Noida police, officials here said on Monday.The woman, in her thirties, was held from the Labour Chowk on the Gejha-Bhangel road in Sector-110 by officials of the Phase-2 police station on Sunday evening, they said. The body of Sanjeev Kumar Yadav was found inside his rented accommodation in Bhangel village in mysterious circumstances on February 21 this year. The case was investigated and it was found that the deceased was killed by a couple who lived on rent in the same house as Yadav did, a police spokesperson said.The neighbouring couple had fled the house after strangulating Yadav. While Chandrabhan Dhaubi, the husband, was arrested on February 26, his wife Poonam was at large since then but got arrested yesterday (Sunday), the spokesperson said. During initial inquiry, Chandrabhan had told the police that Yadav and his wife were in a relationship because of which he had decided to kill the man, according to officials. The couple had intoxicated Yadav and then strangled him to death at his residence before fleeing the house in February. The body was found by the landlord who had then alerted the police, the officials said.The FIR was lodged under Indian Penal Code sections 302 (muder), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 328 (causing hurt with poison) at the Phase-2 police station and the woman has also been sent to jail, the police added.—PTI

Shahdol: &nbsp;A herd of wild elephants from neighbouring Chhattisgarh attacked a couple sleeping outside their house in a village in Shahdol district of Madhya Pradesh, in which the woman died, officials said on Friday. Talking to PTI, Jaisinghnagar Forest Range Officer Abhilasha Rao Kalwa said the tuskers attacked Ramkaran Singh (48) and his wife Draupati Singh (40) while they were asleep outside their under-construction house at Nadama Patour village, about 70 kms from the district headquarters, around midnight on Thursday. "The woman was trampled to death by the elephants, while her husband escaped with minor injuries," she said, adding that there were around 10 pachyderms in the herd. The family of the deceased was later given Rs four lakh financial assistance, Kalwa said. According to officials, these elephants had strayed into Madhya Pradesh from Chhattisgarh and were on their way back when the incident occurred. An alert has been sounded in the area and the movement of the herd is being tracked, they added. In April, a herd of seven elephants had entered Shahdol from Chhattisgarh and killed five people.—PTI
