Panaji: Union Home Minister Amit Shah was given a mineral water bottle worth Rs 850 during his trip to Goa and it was brought from a town located around 10 km away from Panaji, state Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik said on Tuesday.Naik mentioned about the expensive buy while making a strong pitch for rainwater harvesting in Goa and explaining how water will become a scarce and precious resource in the future."When Amit Shah was in Goa (for campaigning for February Assembly polls), he asked for a Himalaya (brand) water bottle. It was then brought from Mapusa (located around 10km from Panaji)," Naik said, addressing an event in South Goa.The mineral water which was purchased for Shah costs Rs 850 per bottle, he said."Even the rate of mineral water bottles available in star hotels hovers in the range of Rs 150-Rs 160. This is how expensive water has become," Naik added.Naik, a former Goa chief minister, in the past has pushed for constructing dams across rivers to accumulate water, which he said, can be sold to Gulf countries in exchange for fuel."The government can build dams across the state, wherever there are mountains, and store water," he said at the event, warning people will fight for water in the future due to shortages.—PTI

Bhopal: Three policemen were killed after miscreants opened fire at them in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh in the wee hours of Saturday, state Home Minister Narottam Mishra said.The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Aron police station, some 160 km from the state capital, around 3 am when the police personnel had gone to nab the miscreants, he said."Following a tip-off about the presence of some miscreants, a police team reached the spot located under Aron police station in Guna district. After the police personnel surrounded them from all sides, the miscreants started firing at them, in which three policemen were killed," he told reporters.Sources said the police team had gone to the spot following reports about four deer of rare species being killed by some miscreants.Police sub inspector Rajkumar Jatav and two constables -- Nilesh Bhargava and Santaram Meena -- were killed in the firing, Mishra said."The incident is saddening and heartbreaking. Instructions have been given to take a strict action against the criminals which will set an example," he said.Further details are awaited.Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will hold a high-level emergency meeting at 9.30 am at his residence in connection with this incident, an official from the Chief Minister's Office said, adding that senior police officers including the DGP, home minister, chief Secretary and others will attend the meeting.—PTI

Tirunelveli: Two persons were rescued and four are still trapped in a quarry near Ponnakudi in Tamil Nadu's Tirunelveli district after a giant stone fell into the quarry last night. Following the incident, two National Disaster Response Force teams were called in from Arakkonam for the rescue operation. As rescue operations continued for several hours, information on the condition of those trapped in the rubble remained unclear. Nellai District Superintendent of Police Saravanan arrived at the scene and inspected the rescue operations.An NDRF team consisting of 30 personnel from 4 Battalion, Arakkonam rushed to Palayamkottai Taluk, Tirunelveli District, TN by road to rescue victims who are trapped due to falling off of a Boulder to 300 feet underneath Quarry mines. "Our 24x7 control room in Arakkonam is closely monitoring the situation round the clock and all efforts are being made in close collaboration with Tamil Nadu State Administration," the NDRF said. Chennai:&nbsp;Flagging the "serious disruptions" faced by the textile industry in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M K Stalin has urged the Centre to initiate a series of steps including making mandatory for spinning mills, declaration of cotton and yarn stocks to rein in the price rise.Despite the Centre notifying withdrawal of import duty levied on cotton, the situation has not improved and prices of cotton and yarn continue to rise, Stalin told Prime Minister Narenda Modi in a letter. "This precarious situation has widespread ramifications for the textile industry in Tamil Nadu. A large number of spinning, weaving and garment units face the danger of closure due to unsustainable demands on their working capital and price mismatch between the agreed price of supply to the buyer vis-a-vis the cost of production," he said in the letter, released by the state government on Monday. The growing discontent in the industry and among the weavers was 'alarming,' he said and sought for a series of steps to handle the situation. "As an immediate measure, stock declaration for cotton and yarn may be made mandatory for all spinning mills so that ginners and cotton traders can obtain actual data on cotton and yarn availability," he told Modi.He also wanted cash credit limit of the spinning mills to purchase cotton to be extended up to 8 months in a year, as against the existing three. "Similarly, margin money sought by the banks at 25 per cent of purchase value may be reduced to 10 per cent since banks are calculating the purchase stock value at lesser rates than the actual purchase/market rates in the market," he added.—PTI

Ambala: A 15-year-old boy died after he choked on a bottle cap while opening it, police said on Saturday. The deceased was identified as Yash, a Class XI student and a resident of Defence Colony in Ambala Cantonment, they said.On Friday night, Yash tried to open the cap of a soft drink bottle with his teeth after his sister could not open it. The cap got stuck in his windpipe, the police said.Yash's family members tried to get the cap out but in vain. He was taken to a hospital but he could not be saved, they said. The body was handed over to his parents after a post-mortem examination, the police said.—PTI

My mother dreamt of a better life for me. In a new wave in Australian politics, the teal independents are marketed as a greener shade than the Liberal Party's traditional blue colour and want stronger government action on reducing Australia's greenhouse gas emissions than either the government or Labour are proposing. Most of their successful candidates are women, their success seen partly as a repudiation of Morrison for his handling of gender issues including sex scandals that have rocked Parliament during his latest three-year term. While Labour will form either a majority or minority government, both major parties lost ground, with support for the coalition dropping by more than 6% from the 2019 election, and Labour's vote falling by around 1.2% as of Sunday morning. It has been an enormous privilege to serve in this role, but I regret that I can no longer continue in good conscience," Javid had said in a tweet.Javid said he can no longer serve in Boris Johnson's government in "good conscience" as he has "lost confidence" in the Prime Minister.Setting out his decision to quit in a letter, he wrote: "I am instinctively a team player but the British people also rightly expect integrity from their Government. Bhopal :&nbsp;A day after a video surfaced on social media showing an eight-year-old child cradling his younger dead brother's body and sitting near a drain, after the hospital administration refused an ambulance to transport the body, the Madhya Pradesh government issued a show-cause notice to the civil surgeon in Morena district hospital on Monday.As per the home minister and the state government's spokesperson Narottam Mishra, a show-cause notice was issued to the Morena district hospital's civil surgeon and financial assistance provided to the family under various government schemes. "The government has taken the matter very seriously and the CEO of the Zilla Panchayat has been asked to submit a report within 24 hours," Mishra told the press on Monday. The 8-year-old boy is seen seated with the body of his 3-year-old brother on his lap as his family desperately looks around for an ambulance, as per a video going viral.In the video the boy is seen seated on the ground, against a wall, waiting for his father to take the body home for cremation. The father is seen looking for a vehicle to take the body home as the hospital refused to provide an ambulance.As per reports, villager Poojaram Jatav had brought his three-year-old son Raja to the district hospital. Raja was suffering from anaemia, and succumbed during the treatment at the government-run hospital.As the ambulance that brought Raja from Ambah Hospital had returned immediately, Jatav asked the doctors and staff of the hospital for a vehicle to take the body to the village but they refused, saying that there was no vehicle in the hospital, and asked him to hire another vehicle.A hapless Jatav then came out of the hospital with the body of Raja, along with his eight-year-old son Gulshan.On receiving the information, SHO Yogendra Singh reached the spot. He picked up the body and went straight to the district hospital. Soon, the hospital administration arranged an ambulance and the body was sent home. -- IANS
