Kolkata: Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari was detained on Monday while trying to visit Santragachi during the party's march to state secretariat Nabanna'. BJP MP Locket Chatterjee and party leader Rahul Sinha were also detained and whisked away in a prison van. They were stopped in front of police training school at the approach to the Second Hooghly Bridge near the secretariat. BJP supporters from across West Bengal started arriving in Kolkata and neighbouring Howrah on Tuesday morning to take part in the saffron party's 'Nabanna Abhijan' (march to secretariat) to protest against alleged corrupt practices of the TMC government.

Kolkata: The streets of Kolkata turned into a virtual battlefield on Tuesday afternoon as BJP activists, marching to the West Bengal Secretariat to protest corruption issues, clashed with police.
A police vehicle was torched, while a BJP councillor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and several others, including both BJP supporters and police personnel, were injured. At around 3 p.m., an group of BJP supporters led by party's national Vice President, Dilip Ghosh and the party's state General Secretary, Jagannath Chatto-padhyay, started moving towards the state secretariat, Nabanna from BJP's state headquarters at Muralidhar Sen Lane.
As they reached central Kolkata, they came to know that Leader of Opposition in Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari had been arrested and taken to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar. At this, a section of BJP supporters from the arms, led by Chattopadhyay started marching towards the police headquarters and were able to reach its gates after breaking through the barricades.
Although the police were initially pushed back, soon a huge contingent of security personnel, led by senior officials of Kolkata Police, stopped the BJP supporters, following which clashes broke out there. Violence also spread to the adjacent Mahatma Gandhi Road, where a police PCR van was allegedly set on fire by BJP supporters.
An ACP and BJP councillor Meena Devi Purohit, along with several others, were injured.
Mahatma Gandhi Road, being a trading hub, has a number of shops with many storing inflammable items. The burning PCR van created panic in the locality and the traders quickly pulled down the shutters of their shops. However, the fire tenders quickly rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire before it could spread further.
A police kiosk there was also vandalised by the BJP supporters.
However, BJP state President Sukanta Majumdar alleged that the PCR van was set on fire by the police only and blame put on his party supporters. Senior city officials rubbished his claims.

Kolkata Witnesses Pitched Battles Between BJP Workers And Police

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday alleged that BJP brought goons from other states to create ruckus during its march to state secretariat Nabanna on Tuesday.
“BJP brought people through trains to participate in that ruckus. Even it brought goons from other states also. They hurled brickbats and crude bombs. Several policemen were injured. They did all these to create tension and destabilise the atmosphere of peace in the state. Police could have resorted to firing to control that. But that was not desirable. So, police acted within limits to restore peace,” she said while addressing an administrative review meeting in East Midnapore district.
Noting that she is never against democratic and peaceful movement by opposition parties in the state, she said: “However, I will not tolerate people organising movements carrying firearms and bombs.”
Banerjee also said that the law will take its own course against those who were responsible for creating trouble and setting police vehicles on fire. The Chief Minister also said that violence on Tuesday just before the forthcoming Durga Puja festival season, has resulted in immense loss for the traders in Kolkata.
“As it is, the traders faced huge losses during the last two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown. When the situation has improved now, the violence by BJP activists on Tuesday added to their loss,” she added. State BJP spokesman in West Bengal, Samik Bhattacharya rubbished her claims. “These are baseless allegations that the Chief Minister is making, being scared of massive public support that Tuesday’s programme has attracted,” he said.
On Tuesday, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Central Division, Debojit Chattopadhyay, was severely beaten up allegedly by the BJP protesters. The city police have filed a case under Section 307 (attempted murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Chattopadhyay is currently under treatment at state-run SSKM Medical College and Hospital with a fractured limb.—IANS

Kolkata: The peace and order situation in West Bengal is "not good at all," Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said on Monday.
The city played host to the newly appointed minister of state for Law and Justice for the Union.
He told reporters, "I feel that the law and order situation in West Bengal is not good at all," in response to questions about recent incidents in the state, such as a bomb at Egra in Purba Midnapur district that claimed 12 lives. However, I plan to investigate that thoroughly before offering any further commentary. Meghwal said he was seeking to rally support for his opposition to an ordinance brought by the central government before of Tuesday's scheduled meeting between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal at the 'Nabanna', the state headquarters here.—Inputs from Agencies
