Lahore: A huge fire broke out at The Children's Hospital in Lahore's Gulberg in Pakistan on Saturday, reported local media. The incident of this massive fire was confirmed by the rescue officials, reported Pakistan's local media outlet Samaa TV. The fire erupted in the pharmacy storage on the third floor where medicines worth millions of rupees were burnt to ashes. No loss of life has been reported so far in the incident. During the rescue operation, the hospital building has been evacuated.According to the Fire Department, at least seven fire engines have been dispatched to put out the fire. Meanwhile, additional fire engines have been summoned from across the city to help put out the fire. To contain the situation, more than 40 firefighters from Fire Department and Rescue 1122 have been deployed at the site. The cause of the fire remains unclear. As per the officials, the cause of the fire will be investigated once the fire has been put out. Earlier on Wednesday, one person was killed and three others fell unconscious after a fire broke out in the basement of a departmental store near Jail Chowrangi in Karachi.Station House Officer (SHO) Arshad Janjua of Ferozabad Police Station said the deceased was an employee of the store, while among the three who lost consciousness was a firefighter.Karachi Metropolitan Corporation's (KMC) Chief Fire Officer Mubeen Ahmed said that 11 fire tenders belonging to the corporation, two water bowsers, one snorkel, 13 water tankers from the Karachi Water, and Sewerage Board as well as tenders from the Pakistan Navy took part in dousing the flames. They had managed to control 70 percent of the blaze by the evening, he said. "However, officials are facing extreme difficulty as the fire erupted in the basement," he said, adding that there were no entry or exit routes. According to the SHO, the blaze had somewhat subsided but erupted once again at around 6 pm, prompting authorities to call fire tenders to the site. "The fire erupted again because of some unknown reasons and spread rapidly, and the firefighters are struggling to extinguish it," the officer added.—ANI

Dallas: A class of blood pressure-lowering medications, reduced the risk of aneurysm rupture by 18 per cent in a multi-centre study of more than 3,000 people with high blood pressure and brain aneurysms, according to new research by the American Heart Association, RAAS inhibitors.The study has been published in the journal, "Hypertension". An aneurysm is a bulging or weakening in the wall of an artery. When this happens in an artery in the brain, it is called an intracranial aneurysm. If an intracranial aneurysm ruptures, it spills blood around the brain and cuts off oxygen to an affected area, which can cause a hemorrhagic stroke, coma and death.These strokes account for 3-5% of all strokes, but a larger proportion of morbidity and mortality than other types of strokes. Each year, approximately 30,000 adults in the United States have intracranial aneurysms that rupture, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Additionally, stroke is a leading cause of disability in the United States.The body's renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) includes hormones that affect blood pressure regulation, and dysregulation of the RAAS can lead to the development of high blood pressure. Two components of RAAS have been shown to be involved in the development of intracranial aneurysms, and previous research has found that dysregulation of RAAS may also contribute to aneurysm rupture. RAAS inhibitors, medications that block the effects of the RAAS, are often used to treat high blood pressure."Approximately half of the patients with intracranial aneurysms have high blood pressure, which can cause vascular inflammation and increase the risk of aneurysm rupture," said the study's senior author Qinghai Huang, M.D., PhD, professor of neurosurgery at Changhai Hospital, Second Military Medical University in Shanghai, China. "Given that one-third of patients with ruptured aneurysms die and another third remain dependent for daily life activities, there is a need to identify modifiable risk factors to prevent aneurysm rupture."This multi-centre study analyzed data collected from 2016 to 2021 at 20 medical centres in different regions across China, collected pre-and post-rupture, to evaluate the association between the use of RAAS inhibitors and other blood pressure medications, including beta-blockers and diuretics, on the risk of aneurysm rupture.More than 3,000 adults with high blood pressure and intracranial aneurysms were included. The study sample was one-third men and two-thirds women, with an average age of 61 years old. Participants' hypertension status was categorized as controlled (normal blood pressure with the use of antihypertensive medications) or uncontrolled (high blood pressure, defined as 140/90 or above, with the use of antihypertensive medications), and was determined by blood pressure measurements taken at one point in time, three months before they were hospitalized for aneurysm.The analysis found that 32% of participants who took RAAS inhibitors experienced an intracranial aneurysm rupture, compared to 67% of those who used non-RAAS inhibitors."We were surprised to find that even among people with controlled hypertension, those who took RAAS inhibitors still had a significantly lower rupture risk than individuals who used non-RAAS inhibitors. Our study highlights that using the proper antihypertensive medications to achieve normalization of blood pressure may remarkably decrease the risk of a ruptured aneurysm," Huang said. "Based on these data, we estimate that nearly 18% of ruptured aneurysms may be prevented if all patients with high blood pressure and intracranial aneurysms were prescribed RAAS inhibitors. Due to the strong potential benefit and high safety of RAAS inhibitors, these findings may also help clinicians to optimize treatment to help people with high blood pressure prevent aneurysm rupture." Using a multivariable model, the researchers calculated that women's risk of aneurysm rupture was 1.8 times higher than men's risk and that the following factors increased the risk of aneurysm rupture: uncontrolled hypertension; exposure to second-hand smoke; and untreated Type 2 diabetes."These findings confirm previous studies indicating that--in addition to blood pressure control--smoking cessation and aggressive treatment of Type 2 diabetes may also help reduce the risk of aneurysm rupture," Huang said. "However, more research is needed to understand how RAAS inhibitors are involved in the prevention of intracranial aneurysm rupture in adults with high blood pressure."—ANI

New York: Measuring the concentrations of medicines in wastewater could add another layer to disease-monitoring efforts and help curb spread of Covid-19, suggests a study.In a pilot project exploring ways to monitor Covid-19, University at Buffalo scientists hunted for pharmaceuticals and viral RNA simultaneously in wastewater in Western New York."Wastewater-based disease surveillance is being done worldwide through monitoring of viral RNA," said lead scientist Diana Aga, Professor of Chemistry in the UB College of Arts and Sciences. "The potential of complementing existing efforts with detection of pharmaceuticals is exciting. There are a lot of opportunities here, though more research is needed," she added. One interesting discovery in the new study, published in the journal Environmental Science &amp; Technology Letters, involves acetaminophen -- a pain reliever and fever reducer that serves as an active ingredient in over-the-counter medicines such as Tylenol, Theraflu, and other brands. At all four wastewater treatment plants included in the project, the research found that acetaminophen concentrations in wastewater spiked before other measures of Covid-19 in the community in early 2021, including concentrations of Covid-19 viral RNA in wastewater and the estimated number of confirmed Covid-19 cases. The spike in viral RNA, in turn, preceded the spike in the estimated number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 by about a week, scientists say. "Our biggest finding is that there's a huge increase in the concentration of acetaminophen, which is used in over-the-counter drugs, that predates the peak of viral RNA in wastewater and the peak in clinical detections in our area during the study period," Aga said."This was very interesting, as it suggests that detection of pharmaceuticals could act as an early warning of a potential disease outbreak in a community," Aga said.Wastewater data is becoming a crucial part of monitoring Covid-19 as home testing has become more popular, leading to many positive cases going unreported.In addition to identifying the spikes in acetaminophen, the study found residues of prescription medications associated with the pandemic in wastewater, including drugs whose emergency use authorisation for treating Covid-19 has been revoked by the US Food and Drug Administration. —IANS

Medicines Found In Wastewater May Signal Covid Spread

Washington: Triptans, a commonly prescribed class of migraine drugs, may also be useful in treating obesity, a new study suggests. In studies on obese mice, a daily dose of triptan led animals to eat less food and lose weight over the course of a month. "We've shown that there is real potential to repurpose these drugs, which are already known to be safe, for appetite suppression and weight loss," said study leader Chen Liu, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Neuroscience and an investigator in the Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute.Obesity affects more than 41% of all adults in the U.S. and increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Most treatments for obesity focus on eating habits and physical activity.Scientists have long known that serotonin, a chemical messenger found throughout the brain and body, plays a key role in appetite. However, there are 15 different serotonin receptors -- molecules that sense serotonin and signal for cells to change their behavior in response. Researchers have struggled to understand the role of each serotonin receptor in appetite, and previous drugs -- including fen-phen and lorcaserin (Belviq) -- that targeted certain individual receptors have been withdrawn from the market due to side effects.Triptans, which are used to treat acute migraines and cluster headaches, work by targeting a different receptor -- the serotonin 1B receptor (Htr1b) -- that had not previously been well studied in the context of appetite and weight loss, said Dr. Liu.For the new study, the researchers tested six prescription triptans in obese mice that were fed a high-fat diet for seven weeks. Mice fed two of these drugs ate about the same amount, but mice fed the other four ate less. After 24 days, mice given a daily dose of the drug frovatriptan lost, on average, 3.6% of their body weight, while mice not given a triptan gained an average of 5.1% of their body weight. Dr. Liu and his colleagues saw similar results when they implanted devices into the animals that gave them a steady dose of frovatriptan for 24 days."We found that these drugs, and one in particular, can lower body weight and improve glucose metabolism in less than a month, which is pretty impressive," said Dr. Liu.Since triptans are generally prescribed for short-term use during migraines, Dr. Liu suspects that patients would not have noticed the longer-term impacts on appetite and weight in the past.To determine exactly how frovatriptan impacts food intake and weight, the researchers engineered mice to lack either Htr1b or Htr2c, the serotonin receptor targeted by fen-phen and lorcaserin. In mice without Htr1b, frovatriptan no longer could decrease appetite or cause weight loss, while cutting out Htr2c had no effect. This confirmed that the drug worked by targeting the serotonin 1B receptor."This finding could be important for drug development," said Dr. Liu. "We not only shed light on the potential to repurpose existing triptans but also brought attention to Htr1b as a candidate to treat obesity and regulate food intake." The team went on to show exactly which neurons in the brain were most important for the role of Htr1b in mediating appetite, homing in on a small group of cells within the brain's hypothalamus.&nbsp;—ANI

New Delhi (The Hawk): Ministry of Ayush has formed an Inter-disciplinary AYUSH R&amp;D Task Force having representation from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) and AYUSH Institutions.&nbsp;The Interdisciplinary AYUSH Research and Development Task Force has formulated and designed clinical research protocols for prophylactic studies and add-on interventions in COVID-19 positive cases for studying four different interventions viz. Ashwagandha, Yashtimadhu, Guduchi + Pippali and a Polyherbal formulation (AYUSH-64). Overall, 150 clinical, pre-clinical and epidemiological studies have been undertaken by the Research Councils and National Institutes under the Ministry of Ayush.Initiatives/measures taken by the Ministry of Ayush to prevent infectious diseases like COVID-19 are as follows -<ol><li class="ql-align-justify">Ministry of Ayush issued an advisory on how to protect yourself from COVID and how to stay healthy. In the advisory, in addition to maintaining hygiene like hand wash, use of mask etc. simple home remedies were also suggested for people.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">A letter to all Chief Secretaries of States / Union territories was sent from the Ministry with more specific suggestions on augmentation of General Immunity of people and about possible AYUSH intervention wherever required in coordination with Health departments of the States / UTs.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">A letter was sent to the Ministry of Health &amp; Family Welfare (MoH&amp;FW) offering to integrate and utilize the huge AYUSH infrastructure to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Ministry has sent a D.O. letter to Principals of all Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homoeopathy (ASU&amp;H) colleges to utilize available infrastructure facilities like Hospital (IPD &amp; OPD), pathology laboratory, ICU and manpower including medical &amp; Paramedical Staff to combat with the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, they were requested to offer their services to local health authorities for utilization of the available facilities by them as per the situation arises. Under various research organizations and National Institutes under the Ministry of Ayush, 140 research studies in the country, are being conducted on AYUSH interventions.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">AYUSH Sanjivani mobile app has also been developed by the Ministry of Ayush. It has documented the impact assessment of effectiveness, acceptance and usage of AYUSH advisories &amp; measures in the prevention of COVID-19 through Mobile app based&nbsp;population study in around 1.35 crores respondents. 85.1% of the respondents reported use of AYUSH measures to prevent COVID-19, among which 89.8% respondents agreed to have benefitted from the practice of AYUSH advisory.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Guidelines for Registered Practitioners of respective system of AYUSH have been prepared by Director Generals of Research Councils and Directors of National Institutes with their team of experts and the same are vetted by the Interdisciplinary AYUSH Research and Development Taskforce of the Ministry of Ayush. Aurraiya: A pregnant woman died under mysterious circumstances in the Bidhuna area of the district after being given an abortion medicine by her husband.The woman's parents have demanded action against her husband and his family.The police have seized the body and sent it for post-mortem. Later, the police shifted the dead body to the mortuary for post-mortem.Station House Officer (SHO) Prakash Chandra said a case under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered in this regard.He said that the post-mortem report will reveal the actual cause of death of the woman. He said law will take its own course if proven that the woman was forcibly given abortion medicine.According to reports, Geeta Yadav, 27, was married to Vipin Yadav about six years ago.The two have two daughters and a son. Geeta was five months pregnant at the time of the incident.According to her parents, her husband gave an abortion medicine to Geeta which led to excessive bleeding. The relatives took her to a nursing home in Naubasta, where the doctors referred her to the Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) hospital where she was declared brought dead by the doctors. —IANS

New Delhi (The Hawk):A new&nbsp;ingredient that can weakly&nbsp;perturb bacterial membrane, thus countering bacterial resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics, can help revive the efficacy of obsolete antibiotics.This strategy can combat the most critical group of bacteria enabling the existing antibiotic arsenal to be used again for complicated infections. It can help counter the rising menace of anti-microbial resistance.The World Health Organization has demarcated&nbsp;Acinetobacter baumannii,&nbsp;Pseudomonas aeruginosa,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Enterobacteriaceae,&nbsp;all of which are resistant to carbapenems as the topmost priority critical pathogens. There are a few treatment options for these bacteria triggering use of combinations of various antibiotics to treat such complicated infections. It was thus pertinent to develop novel non-conventional therapeutic strategies to deal with these pathogens.Scientists at JNCASR, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, have come up with the approach of revitalising the efficacy of existing antibiotics by using them in combination with antibiotic adjuvants --&nbsp;ingredients that can help counter resistance to existing antibiotics. This novel idea can help strengthen the activity of obsolete antibiotics and bring them back into use for treating complicated infections.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Ms. Geetika Dhanda and Prof. Jayanta Haldar incorporated cyclic hydrophobic moieties (portion of a molecule) in a triamine-containing compound the adjuvants thus developed weakly perturbed the membrane of bacteria. This resulted in countering of membrane-associated resistance elements like permeability barrier and expulsion of antibiotics by efflux pumps. When these adjuvants are used in combination with antibiotics that had been rendered ineffective due to such membrane-associated resistance elements, the antibiotics are potentiated, and the combination was effective in killing bacteria.&nbsp;The combination of the adjuvant with antibiotics like fusidic acid, minocycline, and rifampicin inactivates multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. These include&nbsp;Acinetobacter baumannii,&nbsp;Pseudomonas aeruginosa,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Enterobacteriaceae. The study published in the journal&nbsp;ACS Infect. Diseases,&nbsp;highlight the chemical intuition and extent of membrane-perturbation required for the design of non-active and non-toxic adjuvants. The choice of non-active adjuvant would also put less pressure on the bacteria to develop resistance to it. Moreover, weak membrane perturbation would result in less toxicity.&nbsp;&nbsp;

New Delhi (The Hawk): Government of India is aware that despite the orders of the Courts and the relevant regulations of the Medical Council of India, generic medicines are not being prescribed by most medical practitioners. In this regard, clause 1.5 of&nbsp;Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics)&nbsp;&nbsp;Regulations, 2002 prescribes that every&nbsp;physician should&nbsp;prescribe&nbsp;drugs&nbsp;with&nbsp;generic&nbsp;names legibly&nbsp;and&nbsp;preferably&nbsp;in&nbsp;capital letters and he/she shall ensure that there is a rational&nbsp;prescription and use of drug. Further, the erstwhile Medical Council of India (MCI) had&nbsp;issued&nbsp;circulars where all&nbsp;the&nbsp;Registered&nbsp;Medical Practitioners&nbsp;have&nbsp;been&nbsp;directed&nbsp;to&nbsp;comply&nbsp;with&nbsp;the&nbsp;aforesaid&nbsp;provisions.&nbsp;The National Medical Commission Act, 2019 empowers the appropriate State Medical Councils&nbsp;or Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of the Commission, to take disciplinary&nbsp;action&nbsp;against&nbsp;a&nbsp;doctor&nbsp;for&nbsp;violation of the provision of the aforesaid Regulations. When complaints are received against the violation of code of ethics for doctors, such complaints are referred by EMRB (previously by erstwhile MCI) to the concerned State Medical Councils where the doctors/medical practitioners are registered. States have been advised to ensure prescription of generic drugs and conduct regular prescription audits in public health facilities.Practice of prescription audit is one of the prerequisites for getting certified under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS).Under National Health Mission (NHM), support is provided for provision of essential generic drugs free of cost in public health facilities. The support is not only for drugs but also for various components necessary for effective implementation of Free Drug Service Initiative viz. strengthening/setting up robust systems of procurement, quality assurance, IT backed supply chain management systems like Drugs and Vaccines Distribution Management Systems (DVDMS) developed by CDAC, warehousing, prescription audit, grievance redressal, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) training.The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar stated this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

New Delhi:&nbsp;A total of 7,700 samples of medicines were declared not of standard quality and 670 declared spurious or adulterated out of a total 84,874 samples picked for testing during the last three years.The government data disclosed that a total of 2,652 samples of medicines were declared not of standard quality and 263 were declared spurious or adulterated out of a total 84,874 samples picked for testing during the year 2020-21.The enforcement actions were carried out in terms of samples tested, number of drug samples declared sub-standard and spurious/ adulterated during the last three years. While 164 persons were arrested as the concerned authority initiated prosecutions in the year 2020-21, over 500 such arrests were made in the last three years.In a reply in the Lok Sabha on Friday, the ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that the manufacture, sale and distribution of drugs in the country are regulated under the provisions of Drugs &amp; Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Rules, 1945. The regulatory control over the manufacture, sale and distribution of drugs in the country is exercised through a system of licensing and inspection by the State Licensing Authorities (SLAs) appointed by respective State Governments. The SLAs are legally empowered to take action in case of violation of the condition of Licence.The government has taken measures, including strengthening of legal provisions, workshops and training programmes for manufacturers and regulatory officials and measures such as risk based inspection.In cases of fake and spurious drugs, various enforcement actions like drug seizure, arrests of accused persons / registration of FIR, etc., have been carried out by the states/UTs Drugs Controllers. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have taken various regulatory measures to ensure the quality of medicines distributed in the country.The Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 was amended under the Drugs &amp; Cosmetics (Amendment) Act 2008 to provide stringent penalties for manufacture of spurious and adulterated drugs. Certain offences have also been made cognizable and non-bailable. Besides, the states / union territories were requested to set up special courts for trial of offences under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act for speedy disposal. New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a plea by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) seeking action against yoga guru Ramdev for criticising allopathic medicine. The apex court has issued notice to Ramdev and the Centre seeking a reply on the plea seeking initiation of action.

The <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/tags/supreme-court.htm/amp" target="_self">top court</a> observed, "Ramdev popularised Yoga but how can he criticise allopathic medicine? "What is the guarantee that ayurvedic medicines perform better than allopathic medicines? Baba <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/tags/ramdev.htm" target="_self">Ramdev</a> is accusing doctors, and other medical systems of hurting public health."

The <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/tags/ima.htm/amp" target="_self">IMA</a> in its plea alleged that a smear campaign against the vaccination drive and modern medicines are being conducted in the country.

Ramdev's <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/tags/patanjali.htm/amp" target="_self">Patanjali </a>Ayurved had on February 19, 2021, said that the Coronil tablet had received certification from the Ayush Ministry as a medicine supporting Covid-19 treatment as per the World Health Organization's certification scheme.

However, Patanjali's managing director Acharya Balkrishna later made a clarification about the certification through a tweet saying, "We want to clarify to avoid confusion that our WHO GMP compliant COPP certificate to Coronil is issued by DCGI, Government of India. It is clear that WHO do not approve or disapprove any drugs. WHO works for building a better, healthier future for people all over the world (sic)."

The announcement regarding the Ayush certification for Coronil and release of research paper calling it the "first evidence-based medicine for <a href="https://www.cnbctv18.com/tags/covid-19.htm/amp" target="_self">COVID-19</a> by Patanjali" was done at an event attended by former health minister Harsh Vardhan.

Patanjali had launched Coronil on June 23. Balkrishna claimed that the medicine could cure Covid-19 patients within 5-14 days.&nbsp;

Stockholm: Swedish geneticist Svantee Paabo, whose work provided key insights into human evolution and and how humans spread around the planet by achieving "the seemingly impossible task" of cracking the genetic code of the Neanderthals was Monday announced as the winner of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
The Prize committee said Paabo - the son of 1982 Nobel laureate Sune Bergstrom and one of the founders of the discipline of paleogenomics - performed the "sensational" feat of discovering the humans' previously unknown relative - the Denisovans - whose genes can still be detected in some inhabitants of south Asia.

"Paabo received the news while enjoying a cup of coffee. After the shock wore off, one of the first things he wondered was if he could share the news with his wife, Linda," the committee said in a tweet.
Paabo's work helps to explain where the human species, Homo sapiens, came from and what allowed it thrive while other relatives went extinct, it said.
Though work on cracking the human genetic code began in the 1990s, it relied on fresh samples of pristine DNA, but his interest was in the old, degraded and contaminated genetic material of our ancestors and he was able to sequence DNA from a 40,000-year-old piece of bone to show Neanderthals were separate from both modern day humans and chimpanzees.
"By revealing genetic differences that distinguish all living humans from extinct hominins, his discoveries provide the basis for exploring what makes us uniquely human", the Nobel committee said.
It also said that more comparisons between Neanderthal DNA and humans from around the world showed their DNA was a closer match to humans coming from Europe or Asia, and that that Homo sapiens had sex and children with Neanderthals after migrating out of Africa.
Paabo's work on the 40,000-year-old finger bone found in the Denisova cave in Siberia, revealed the existence of the previously unknown hominin - who were dubbed Denisovans, and had bred with Homo sapiens too. When someone is exposed to carbon monoxide, it passes through their lungs and into their bloodstream. The body may become oxygen-starved due to carbon monoxide attaching to haemoglobin, the molecule that typically transports oxygen throughout the body.
A blood test that gauges the percentage of haemoglobin that is linked to carbon monoxide can identify carbon monoxide poisoning.
The new findings were presented by Dr Mathilde Papin from the emergency department at Nantes University Hospital in France. She said: "If we suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, we want to be able to treat patients quickly with oxygen in the ambulance or in the emergency room, and that means we need a test that can be done immediately onsite. A blood test is reliable, but not practical."
Pulse oximetry is a quick and simple test that uses a sensor that is often put on the fingertip of the patient to detect their pulse and calculate the percentage of their blood that is oxygenated (called oxygen saturation). Patients with lung problems including asthma or chest infections are monitored using this method.
The presence of carbon dioxide in a patient's blood, which is replacing the oxygen in their blood, may also be indicated by a reduced degree of oxygen saturation. The use of pulse oximetry to test for carbon monoxide poisoning, according to Dr Papin, has produced conflicting results in both clinical practice and research.
Dr Papin and her associates carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to get a clearer picture. They looked for all prior clinical trials that included both adults and children and compared pulse oximetry with blood tests in patients or healthy volunteers, and they discovered 19 such trials. In order to assess the efficacy of the two testing methods, the researchers were able to aggregate the findings from 11 different investigations, which included information on more than 2000 individuals.
This shows that 77% of the time, pulse oximetry was able to accurately detect positive instances (also known as "sensitivity" or "true positive rate"). The true negative rate, also known as "specificity," was able to accurately identify negative situations 83% of the time. It had an 86% overall accuracy rate.
"At 23%, the false negative rate with pulse oximetry is too high for accurately triaging patients with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning," Dr Papin stated before Congress. This technique is insufficiently accurate and ought not to be applied in therapeutic settings.
The researchers are now planning to assess a different strategy for quicker measurement of carbon monoxide levels in the microscopic blood arteries (capillaries).
Professor Youri Yordanov from the St Antoine Hospital emergency department, APHP Paris, France, is Chair of the EUSEM 2022 abstract committee and was not involved in the research. He says: "After systematically assessing all the available evidence on the topic, this research team suggests that using pulse oximetry as a tool for diagnosing carbon monoxide poisoning is not a reliable method for this purpose. Other screening methods need to be developed and evaluated, and in the meantime, we must rely on a combination of symptoms, evaluating the likelihood of exposure to carbon monoxide and blood tests." —ANI

According to a systematic review and meta-analysis published today (Tuesday) at the European Emergency Medicine Congress, pulse oximetry is an unreliable approach for identifying persons who are suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and it should not be used for this reason.

Jakarta: The deaths of nearly 100 children in Indonesia have prompted the country to suspend sales of all syrup and liquid medication, the media reported.
It comes just weeks after a cough syrup in The Gambia was linked to the deaths of nearly 70 children, the BBC reported.
Indonesia said some syrup medicine was found to contain ingredients linked to acute kidney injuries (AKI), which have killed 99 young children this year.
It is not clear if the medicine were imported or locally produced.
On Thursday, Indonesian health officials said they had reported around 200 cases of AKI in children, most of who were aged under five. Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a global alert over four cough syrups that were linked to the deaths of almost 70 children in The Gambia.
The WHO found the syrups used there -- made by an Indian pharmaceutical company -- contained "unacceptable amounts" of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. The syrups have been "potentially linked with acute kidney injuries", said the organisation.
Indonesia's Health Minister on Thursday said the same chemical compounds were also found in some medicines used locally. "Some syrups that were used by AKI child patients under five were proven to contain ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol that were not supposed to be there, or of very little amount," said Budi Gunadi Sadikin, BBC reported.
However, he did not disclose how many cases involved the toxic medicines. Indonesian authorities said the cough syrups used in The Gambia were not sold locally.
One epidemiologist said the true death toll could be even higher than reported. "When cases like these happen, (what we know is) the tip of the iceberg, which means there could be far more victims," Dicky Budiman, an epidemiologist from Griffith University told BBC Indonesia. —IANS

Haridwar: The Uttarakhand Special Task Force on Saturday conducted raids in a factory of fake medicines in Dada Jalalpur village under the Bhagwanpur Police Station area in Haridwar district.
SSP STF Ajay Singh said that they recovered a large number of spurious drug-making machines, three spurious medicine boxes, 3160 medicines, fake wrappers and raw material in the factory of spurious drugs from the house of Khalid Hussain.
He said two persons, Sarwan Kumar and Ravi Mishra, have been arrested.
The main accused Khalid and his wife Shama Ansari are absconding. The police official said the place has been sealed by the Drug Inspector and SDM Roorkee.
For the past several days, Uttarakhand STF were working on the leads in the case. In the past too, under Operation Health, a dozen arrests and millions of counterfeit drugs along with illegal factories have been exposed. —ANI

New Delhi (The Hawk): The Union Minister of Ayush and Ports, Shipping &amp; Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the new, state of the art complex of Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM) in Silchar today. The newly opened institute is the first such center in the Northeast on Unani medicine — a traditional medicinal practice among the Ayush systems. The new complex spread over an area of 3.5 acres is built with an investment of ?48 crores. The complex was developed by the National Projects Construction Corporation (NPCC) - a Govt of India enterprise. It was handed over to Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Ayush, Govt of India.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Ayush system of medicine has reinvigorated its acceptability among people once again after the proven results has benefitted lakhs of people during the pandemic. The effectiveness of Ayush system of medicine in enhancing the quality of life of people is a proven fact that’s why we are working on a medical system, where the best of contemporary medicine can be supplemented with the traditional medicinal practices of Ayush.”
Adding further, Shri Sonowal said, “Unani is one of the most celebrated traditional medicine, not only in India but in other countries as well. It is a matter of great pride that this state-of-the-art institute on Unani medicine is now functional from Silchar to help people avail effective treatment and regain quality of life. The core belief of the Unani medicine works on the principle that humans body has its own self-healing power which needs to be boosted. The major benefit of this medicine is that it addresses the prevention and treatment of diseases by using herbal remedies.”
The newly built complex of RRIUM, which will be under CCRUM, the apex government organization for research in Unani Medicine, will be providing a wide range of patient care services along with conducting scientific research on different aspects, fundamental and applied, of Unani Medicine, and on diseases which are more prevalent in the Northeast, especially in Assam. The centre is also equipped to screen patients with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) like cardiac, pulmonary, stroke, cancer and diabetes. With a special focus on children, the centre will also provide health checkups for school children and provide effective treatment to those found to be in distress. The centre also aims to assess Temperament (Mizaj) of patients with different ailments. The state of art complex of RRIUM is equipped with specialised OPD clinics in General, Research, Ilaj-bit-Tadbeer (Regimenal), Specialized Ilaj-bit-Tadbeer (Regimenal) therapies, Mother &amp; Child Health (MCH) and Geriatrics.
The newly opened RRIUM will also be conducting School Health Programme, Clinical Mobile Research Programme, Health camps &amp; fairs to provide treatment to as many as possible. This modern facility is also equipped with a modern Pathology Laboratory, Bio-Chemistry Laboratory, Radiology Unit and Quality Control Laboratory. A herbal garden with medicinal plant as well as potential survey are also planned to be developed in the near future.
