He said that if doctors will fully be trained in emergency medicine, can provide immediate medical care to the injured during emergencies and accidents occurring on yatra routes and hilly areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Professor Manoj Gupta Dean Academics said that it is necessary for the health care workers to be skilled for emergency medical treatment on the travel routes in the state of Uttarakhand with heterogeneous geographical locations. Prof Manoj Gupta addressed the gathering and shared his experience about difficulties faced at high altitudes while evacuating the patients. New Delhi (The Hawk): Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya today inaugurated the ‘NEW STATE OF ART’ multi-speciality Out-patient and In-patient (OPD/IPD) blocks at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) and associated hospital, New Delhi in the presence of Dr Bharti Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.The new IPD Block will increase the bed strength of LHMC from 877 to more than 1000 beds. The IPD Block houses an additional highly sophisticated CT scanner. The new multi-speciality OPD Block has additional facilities for holistic health care including all medical and surgical specialities, Ayurveda, Yoga &amp; Naturopathy &amp; Homeopathy.Speaking on the occasion, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya said that the country has moved away from a “token” towards a “total” approach. He said, “Today, under the leadership of our respected Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, the goal of the Central Government is to work holistically in the health sector with synergy between preventive healthcare and modern medical facilities. He was lodged in Patiala central jail on May 20 after Supreme Court imposed one-year rigorous imprisonment on him in the 1988 road rage case.Sidhu was acquitted in connection with the culpable homicide charges but was convicted of the offence of voluntarily causing hurt.The court had slapped a fine of Rs 1,000 on Sidhu and also acquitted Sidhu's associate, Rupinder Singh Sandhu in the case.The Sessions Court Judge of Patiala on September 22, 1999, acquitted Sidhu and his associate, due to a lack of evidence in the case and giving the benefit of the doubt.It was then challenged by the victim's families before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which had in 2006, convicted and sentenced Sidhu to three years imprisonment. Sidhu then filed an appeal before the apex court challenging this order. On December 27, 1988, Sidhu allegedly beat up Gurnam Singh on his head, leading to his death.—IANS

Kerala: A Kerala court on Monday convicted the husband of Vismaya, an Ayurveda medical student who hanged herself in her marital home in June last year, for dowry death and abetting her suicide. Additional District and Sessions Judge-1 Sujith K N also convicted the husband for the offence of dowry related harassment under the IPC and various provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, Special Public Prosecutor G Mohanraj told reporters outside the court.The SPP said that the court is expected to pronounce the sentence on Tuesday after hearing arguments on behalf of the prosecution and the convict.He said that the prosecution would be seeking the maximum possible punishment for the convict -- S Kiran Kumar."This is a verdict against a social evil and not just against one person," the SPP said. The offence of dowry death under section 304B of IPC carries a minimum sentence of seven years and a maximum of life imprisonment.The offences of dowry harassment under Section 498A of IPC and abetment to suicide under Section 306 of IPC carry a maximum punishment of three years and 10 years jail term, respectively.Vismaya's father spoke to reporters outside the court and said that his daughter has got justice.He said he did not have words to express his gratitude for the efforts of the prosecution and the investigating team.Prior to leaving for the court, he had told reporters at his residence that the government appointed a very good investigating team to probe the case and a very good prosecutor.Just before the verdict was delivered, state Transport Minister Antony Raju told reporters that irrespective of the court's decision in the criminal case, there will be no change in the state government's decision to dismiss Kumar from service.Kumar, who was an assistant motor vehicle inspector, was out on bail which was granted to him by the Supreme Court.However, with his conviction, the bail granted to him stands rescinded and police took him into custody from the court.He was taken to the district jail and will arrive in court on Tuesday from there.While being taken away by the police from the court, Kumar did not answer the repeated queries by reporters on what he had to say regarding the verdict.Vismaya's brother and mother too welcomed the verdict.The teary-eyed mother, who was watching the news from home, told reporters that her daughter has got justice.She also expressed hope that Kumar would get the maximum possible punishment.Vismaya's brother too spoke on similar lines.Talking to a news channel from his workplace, he said that while it would not bring back his sister back, the verdict would hopefully act as a deterrent and may help countless others like his sister avoid a fate like that of Vismaya.IG Harshitha Attaluri, who was overseeing the probe in the case, also welcomed the verdict and told reporters that it would act as a deterrent against dowry practices in society.She said that dowry was the reason behind the harassment and cruelty suffered by the victim which led her to take the extreme step.The court had on May 17 reserved its verdict in the case.Kerala Police in its over 500-page charge sheet had said that Vismaya committed suicide due to dowry harassment.Vismaya, 22, was found dead in the house of her husband at Sasthamkotta in Kollam district on June 21, 2021.A day before the incident, Vismaya had sent WhatsApp messages to her relatives over the alleged harassment by Kumar over dowry, as well as photos of wounds and marks of beatings on her body. Her father had said that 100 sovereigns of gold (one sovereign is equal to 8 grams gold) and over one acre land, besides a car worth Rs 10 lakh was given as dowry to Kumar during the wedding in 2020.But Kumar did not like the car and wanted Rs 10 lakh in cash. As he was told it was not possible, he used to torture her, the father had said.—PTI

Berhampur / Alipurduar:&nbsp;Sibani Das, a nursing officer of state-run MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Odisha's Berhampur, has been selected for the National Florence Nightingale Award 2021. Smita Kar, another nurse working in a Public Health Centre in remote Tasati tea garden in Falakata block of West Bengal's Alipurduar district, has also been selected for the highest nursing honour in the country instituted by the Indian Nursing Council (INC). Fifty-year-old Das has been selected in recognition of her dedication to the profession, particularly for her service during the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital's superintendent Santosh Kumar Mishra said on Monday. Kar, on the other hand, was selected for spreading awareness among the tribal populace after duty hours. The prestigious award will be conferred on Das and Kar by President Ram Nath Kovind at a function, the date and time of which are yet to be decided. The respective health departments have been informed about Das's and Kar's selection for the award. "I am very happy for being selected for the highest nursing honour in the country. It will encourage others to serve people more," Das said. "I thank my co-workers and family for always being by my side. Without their support, this would not have been possible," Kar said. Das, who hails from Lochapada on the outskirts of Berhampur town, has around 25 years of experience as a nurse. She joined MKCG Medical College and Hospital as a nursing officer in 2007. Before that, she had worked in a private hospital in West Bengal from 1997 to 2007. She was deputed to Tata COVID Hospital at Sitalapalli near here during the pandemic in 2020. She served at COVID Hospital-11 in the medical college and hospital last year. "She had worked hard in both the COVID hospitals. She deserved the award. The medical college and hospital had recommended her name to the INC for the award, Mishra added.—PTI

Gurugram: &nbsp;An MBBS graduate was allegedly duped of Rs 52 lakh here on the pretext of admission in a medical college in Kolkata to pursue a master's degree, police said. Subhanshu Vats, a resident of sector 4, in his complaint alleged that he received a text message on his phone offering admission at KPS medical college and hospital in Jadavpur, Kolkata, they said.When he called on the given number, one Satish Malik replied and asked Vats to share his documents on WhatsApp and later on e-mail, they said. On March 13, Malik asked him for a demand draft (DD) of Rs 23 lakh in the name of the medical college, however, Vats sent a DD of Rs 8 lakh. After three days when Vats visited the college in Kolkata, Malik introduced him to three people who returned his DD and told him to give Rs 50 lakh to one Dr N P Dutta for admission under management quota, Vats said in his complaint. He said Dutta came to Gurugram on March 19 and took the money from him and gave an allotment letter which was later found to be fake. Vats also said that he also deposited Rs 2 lakh as registration fee in the account of one Budh Singh.The doctor approached police after all the accused switched off their phones and the college confirmed that his allotment letter was fake, police said. A special inquiry was conducted by the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of police and found the allegations to be true, they said. An FIR was registered against five people at sector 9 police station under sections of Indian Penal Code pertaining to cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy. We are investigating the matter and trying to nab the accused, SHO of sector 9 police station Manoj Kumar said.—PTI

Colombo: Sri Lanka's newly appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, during a meeting with representatives from the Joint Chambers on Thursday, explained that the Government was targeting USD 5 billion for repayments and USD 1 billion to bolster the country's reserves. During the meeting, Wickremesinghe elaborated that discussions with the International Monetary Fund are proceeding and was hopeful that the negotiations would end this month.He further explained that the debt restructuring has already begun, following the appointment of financial and legal advisors. Sri Lanka's Prime Minister said that any bridging finance to help in alleviating the crisis is dependent on an agreement with the IMF being reached. Commenting further, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe stated that talks were continuing with donor nations. He added that relations with Japan had broken down, and it would take a while to repair those relations and regain their confidence. In regards to the medicine shortage, the Prime Minister explained that former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed, who was appointed on May 19 to coordinate the relief efforts for the island nation, was leading the international appeal for urgently needed medical supplies.Addressing the issue of food scarcity, the Prime Minister explained that securing fertilizer and compiling a food security program were being given equal priority. He explained that in the event of any excess crops, those would be provided to vulnerable groups at a concessionary rate. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Sri Lanka relaxed the import restrictions on 369 items in March and April this year.Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies, has issued a gazette notification on the relaxation, the Ministry said in a press statement. Earlier, those who wanted to import any of the 369 items had to obtain an import licence, and the decision to restrict the import was taken to reduce foreign currency spending on foreign products. Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence with food and fuel shortages, soaring prices and power cuts affecting a large number of the citizens, resulting in massive protests over the government's handling of the situation.The recession is attributed to foreign exchange shortages caused by a fall in tourism during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as reckless economic policies, like the government's move last year to ban chemical fertilizers in a bid to make Sri Lanka's agriculture "100 per cent organic". Washington: A recent study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, has revealed that adults who consume upto 1.5 to 3.5 litres of coffee per day, with or without sugar, have less chances to die as compared to those adults who do not drink coffee, at all. Previous studies observing the health effects of coffee have found that coffee consumption is associated with a lower risk of death but did not distinguish between unsweetened coffee and coffee consumed with sugar or artificial sweeteners.Researchers from Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China used data from the U.K. Biobank study health behaviour questionnaire to evaluate the associations of consumption of sugar-sweetened, artificially sweetened, and unsweetened coffee with all-cause and cause-specific mortality. More than 171,000 participants from the UK without known heart disease or cancer were asked several dietary and health behaviour questions to determine coffee consumption habits. The authors found that during the 7-year follow-up period, participants who drank any amount of unsweetened coffee were 16 to 21 percent less likely to die than participants who did not drink coffee.They also found that participants who drank 1.5 to 3.5 daily cups of coffee sweetened with sugar were 29 to 31 percent less likely to die than participants who did not drink coffee. The authors noted that adults who drank sugar-sweetened coffee added only about 1 teaspoon of sugar per cup of coffee on average. Results were inconclusive for participants who used artificial sweeteners in their coffee. Any accompanying editorial by the editors of Annals of Internal Medicine notes that while coffee has qualities that could make health benefits possible, confounding variables including more difficult to measure differences in socioeconomic status, diet, and other lifestyle factors may impact findings. The authors add that the participant data is at least 10 years old and collected from a country where tea is a similarly popular beverage.They caution that the average amount of daily sugar per cup of coffee recorded in this analysis is much lower than specialty drinks at popular coffee chain restaurants, and many coffee consumers may drink it in place of other beverages that make comparisons to non-drinkers more difficult. Based on this data, clinicians can tell their patients that there is no need for most coffee drinkers to eliminate the beverage from their diet but to be cautious about higher calorie specialty coffees.—ANI

Washington: According to a study from researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the wealth of brain wave data collected during overnight sleep studies can predict future health outcomes, strengthening the concept of sleep as a “window” into health. Results show that a model based on quantitative analyses of sleep data was able to predict the 10-year risk of all 11 health outcomes selected for analysis. The three outcomes with the highest risk ratios associated with poor-to-average sleep were dementia (RR = 6.2), mortality (RR = 5.7), and mild cognitive impairment or dementia (RR = 4.0).“It is surprising that sleep can predict the future incidence of 11 outcomes covering neurological, psychiatric, cardiovascular conditions, and mortality even before the actual diagnosis, using data where the outcomes occur about three years later from the baseline sleep recording,” said lead author Haoqi Sun, who has a doctorate in machine learning and computational neuroscience and is an instructor in neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. “We already know sleep is informative about health, but it is still quite a surprise that the brain activity during sleep can reflect so much information, let alone other important signals during sleep such as respiration and heart rates.” The study involved quantitative analyses of the sleep microstructure in 8,673 adults who had a diagnostic sleep study in a sleep center using polysomnography. The participants had an average age of 51 years; 51% were female. The researchers extracted 86 features from the data generated by overnight EEG, a recording that measures brain waves. They sorted participants into three groups — poor, average and good sleep –and used a statistical model to assess health risk. Health outcomes were determined using medical codes, brain imaging reports, medications, and/or cognition scores. Results were controlled for potential confounders including age, sex, body mass index, and certain prescription medication use. While sleep medicine physicians routinely use sleep studies for the diagnosis of sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, Sun said the findings suggest that decoding sleep data could play a more significant role in health care.“The ability to use noninvasive physiologic measurements of sleep to predict future incident health outcomes would be significant, because it might allow early interventions to prevent unfavorable outcomes,” he said.—ANI

Deoria: In a shocking incident, a youth in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria has alleged that he was being blackmailed by an unknown person who asked for his nude video on WhatsApp.He alleged that the accused had asked for his nude video on the pretext of getting a medical check-up exam for a job.He said that the accused was now asking him to pay Rs 25,000 or else his video would be uploaded on the internet.According to reports, the incident took place in Rampur Kharkhana police station limits.The youth, who is unemployed, said that he has been running from pillar to post to get a job. He said that he has also applied for various jobs abroad and has submitted various required documents in this connection.He said that he received a call on June 9 and the caller had asked him to send his nude video for a medical check-up after which he would get a job abroad. The accused lured the victim into sending his nude video on WhatsApp by saying that if he sent the video on his mobile phone, he would not have to step out of his house for a medical check-up.A day later, the victim received a call from another number and he was asked to pay Rs 25,000.The victim narrated his ordeal to his friends and has filed a written complaint at Rampur Kharkhana police station. —IANS

Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to augment medical facilities with 'One District One Medical College' scheme.Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Manoj Aggarwal said that a plan has been made to improve health facilities in rural areas in the budget.Under this, sub-centres will be opened for a population of 5,000, primary health centres (PHCs) for more than 10,000 population, and community health centres (CHCs) for more than that. At the same time, keeping in mind serious cases, there is a plan to open a 100-bed hospital.According to the government spokesman, UP is on the way to creating a new record in the medical field with facilities like lab, CHC, PHC rejuvenation, the establishment of PICU NICU, and health ATMs.The state government is engaged in equipping each district with medical facilities.The health department is planning to overcome the shortage of staff, and equipment for tests like X-rays, ultrasound and medicines.Under the National Health Mission in the state, the facilities of CHC-PHC level health centres will be increased by an amount of Rs 10,547.42 crore. New CHCs, PHCs, sub-centres and health and wellness centres will also be opened in rural areas from the budget released under NHM. —IANS

Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath government is preparing an action plan for re-operation of nearly 40 paramedical training centres of the state government and training institutes which have been closed for the last three decades in Uttar Pradesh.These 40 paramedical training centres of the health department in the state have been closed since 1989.Yogi Adityanath has directed top officials to work on infrastructure facilities for better training of ANMs (Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery) and GNMs (General Nursing and Midwifery) also.According to government spokesman, as many as nine nursing schools are also going to start in the state from July 15, while 35 ANM training centres will start operating from August.The Chief Minister has instructed the officials to ensure strict standards of compliance in every institute.He has said that the standards should be strictly followed. "The faculty should be good enough to take full care of the training. Make sure arrangements are made for their training in the Medical College and District Hospital," said the Chief Minister.The spokesman said that Uttar Pradesh will emerge as the largest nursing hub once GNM training schools, ANM training centres, medical colleges and district hospitals become operational as training centres.The state government has increased the number of seats in nursing courses on behalf of the Medical Education Department. —IANS

New Delhi (The Hawk): During the inaugural ceremony of the “Global Ayush Investment and Innovation Summit” held on 20th&nbsp;April 2022 at Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Prime Minister made the announcement to launch a special category of Ayush visa for tourists visiting India for Ayush medical tourism/education/treatment including Yoga. Accordingly, the Ministry of Ayush has requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to work out the modalities for creation of separate category for Ayush Visa/eVisa. It is a part of Heal in India campaign to promote traditional medical tourism.<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with the Ministry of Ayush has been working with CDAC and SEPC for developing one step portal for the convenience and ease of credible information for those who want to take treatment in India from abroad</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Chintan Shivirs were organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to promote Heal in India and Heal by India. The Ministry of Ayush has also participated in these Chintan shivir. Certain action points were identified in the Chintan Shivir to promote traditional medicine in Tourism in India.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">A Round table and plenary sessions on heal in India were also organized during global Ayush Investment and Innovation summit at Gandhinagar, Gujrat to promote India as the leading destination for medical value travel.</li></ul>Ministry of Ayush has prepared a concept note on Ayush Park.This information was given by Minister of Ayush Shri Sarbananda Sonowal in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.

Beijing: China on Thursday said that the country has made progress in regards to facilitating the return of Indian students and is working in tandem with relevant departments to see that the first batch of Indian students can come back to study in China at the earliest.The Indian students pursuing medicine from Chinese Universities are unable to return to China to attend classes due to COVID-19-induced restrictions."We have been working intensively for the return of foreign students to China, as you can see. Some foreign students have already returned to China to continue their studies. As for the return of Indian students, as we have said before, the relevant departments in China and India have been in contact and made progress on this. The responsible departments in both countries will stay in close communication and work for the early return of the first batch of Indian students," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said.He made these remarks at a routine press conference on Thursday when asked about the progress of Indian students returning to China for study.In a similar gesture, on Tuesday, when attending the World Economic Forum Special Virtual Dialogue with Global Business Leaders, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang also promised to relax restrictions on international travel, including facilitating people-to-people exchanges, reported Global Times. Earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting stressed the need for expediting the process of return of Indian students to China to attend classes on an early date.In order to facilitate the return of Indian students, Jaishankar met with Wang Yi on March 25. Jaishankar in March had said he strongly took up with the visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi the predicament of Indian students studying in China who haven't been allowed to return to that country citing COVID-19 restrictions.The External Minister hoped that China will take a non-discriminatory approach on the issue since it involves the future of many young people."I also took up strongly the predicament of Indian students studying in China who haven't been allowed to return citing COVID restrictions.
