Patna: Bihar Assembly Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha announced his resignation on the floor of the House on Wednesday after an emotionally charged speech in which he expressed anguish over the no-confidence motion moved against him by the ruling 'Mahagathbandhan'.
Sinha, who belongs to the BJP which now stands stripped of power in the state, left the House in turmoil as he adjourned proceedings till 2 pm.
He made a hasty exit from the House, and MLAs of the BJP, almost all of whom were wearing saffron scarves and raising slogans like ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and ‘Jai Shri Ram', followed suit.
Earlier, Sinha spoke for nearly 20 minutes, claiming that after the sudden change of government he wanted “to resign on my own” but decided otherwise after he learnt that a no-confidence motion had been moved.
“It had become incumbent upon me to respond to the motion. Some of the members moving the motion alleged that I had been undemocratic and dictatorial. This I cannot accept,” said Sinha.&nbsp;

Patna (The Hawk): In a significant victory over Nitish-Mahagathbandhan Tejashwi's in Bihar, the BJP won the Kurhani Assembly byelection on Thursday.
After 23 rounds of counting, Kedar Prasad Gupta of the BJP defeated Manoj Kushwaha of the JD(U) by a margin of 3,645 votes.
Manoj Kushwaha received 73,016 votes, while Kedar Gupta was able to secure 76,648 votes. Manoj Kushwaha departed the centre after the 22nd round of counting.
Anil Sahani of the RJD previously held the position, however he was removed after being found guilty in the LTA fraud.
The BJP has sent a strong message to the Mahagathbandhan, a seven-party coalition in power in Bihar, with this victory. For the chief minister Nitish Kumar and the deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav, this seat was also a prestige matter. Lalan Singh, the national head of the JD(U), had even set up camp in Kurhani for the majority of the time to keep this seat. The Mahagathbandhan may be affected if Manoj Kushwaha loses in the 2024 Lok Sabha and 2025 Assembly elections.
The JD(U) and RJD have been preparing to discredit the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha election since the creation of the grand coalition government in Bihar. But in just two months, the BJP has triumphed in two by-elections, Gopalganj and Kurhani.
Mahagathbandhan vigorously campaigned in the Kurhani by-election, according to BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi. In this election, they used Lalu Prasad Yadav's name and played the sympathy card, but their candidate still came in last. Nitish Kumar, the chief minister, held Kurhani in high regard. He made multiple trips there to campaign, but the JD(U) candidate was defeated.
"Nitish Kumar lacks the moral justification to continue serving as chief minister. "Nitish Kumar should resign from his position in the same manner that Nitish Kumar did in 2014 after the JD(U) won only two seats in the Lok Sabha election," Modi added.
Following their victory in Kurhani, BJP leaders and supporters lit fireworks and chanted "Jai Shri Ram" at the party headquarters in Patna.

"We are Biharis and don't think of us as fools (Ham Log Bihari Hai, Hamko Burbak Mat Samjhiye)," Tejashwi said while taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the promises he had made before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.
The Mahagathbandhan showed its strength on Saturday, when every MLA, MP, and minister was at the rally.
"Narendra Modi had already vowed to provide Bihar special status during a rally held at this very location in 2014. However, the situation evolved into a jumla. Please don't presume that all Biharis are dimwits. Everything is clear to us. What happened to the promise that farmers' income will treble by 2022, as made by the Centre? Where is the government's plan to build concrete homes for every citizen? To what extent has the Centre been able to deliver on its promises so far? "As Tejashwi put it.
"What was there for Bihar in the Union Budget this year? Zero. It is Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who is developing Bihar in his own capacity," the RJD leader said.
"BJP does not have any leader, all of them are dealers. They are only trying to divide the society on religious lines. I'm the son of Lalu Prasad, who never compromised with the communal forces in his entire life. I will not bend before these forces," Tejashwi said.—Inputs from Agencies

Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, presiding over a meeting of the Mahagathbandhan members in the Assembly complex on Monday, slammed some of the legislators for making irresponsible statements to the media.
“If anyone has a problem, meet me. Avoid giving statements in the media unnecessarily,” Nitish Kumar reportedly said during the meeting, as per participants at the meeting.
He especially slammed RJD MLC Sunil Singh and reportedly said 'why are you staying in the Mahagathbandhan while meeting (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah. At this, Sunil Singh stood up and said that he never met Amit Shah. Nitish Kumar retorted that he had met Amit Shah and he have seen the photographs on Facebook.
Nitish Kumar, keeping in view the split in the NCP, asked the legislators to stay alert, warning that the BJP can do anything on the basis of money power.
“The Chief Minister was angry at Sunil Singh who had given several statements in the media. He also made suggestions to legislators.He was focusing on the unity of the Mahagathbandhan,” CPI-ML MLA Sandeep Saurav said.
As per CPI MLA Ajay Kumar, the Chief Minister had taken the names of many leaders and asked them to avoid going to the media. "He said that if anyone has a problem, come to me,” he added.
After the meeting of the Mahagathbandhan, a high level meeting was also held in the residence of Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav where party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was also present.
Tejashwi Yadav was reportedly very angry with Education Minister Prof Chandra Shekhar following his clash with his department's Additional Chief Secretary K.K. Pathak, and asked him that how many schools had he visited since he became a minister.

Nitish Kumar slams Mahagatbandhan legislators making unnecessary statements to media

Patna: Fresh speculations of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar contesting Lok Sabha polls from adjoining BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh have left the ruling Mahagathbandhan in Bihar and the saffron party, in opposition here, at each other’s throat.
The speculations were triggered after Shravan Kumar, a Bihar minister, who is also the JD(U)’s in-charge for UP, said there were “demands” that the party boss enter the fray from the adjoining state.
“I was recently in Jaunpur and there are very strong demands that honourable chief minister consider fighting Lok Sabha polls from UP,” Shravan Kumar had told a regional news channel on Wednesday.
Bijendra Yadav, the most senior member of the cabinet and a former state JD(U) president, told reporters at the party office, “Not just Uttar Pradesh, but our units in many other states want the chief minister to contest from there. Of course, it is a decision for the leader to take”.
Notably, shortly after Kumar had quit the NDA last year, vowing to defeat the BJP-led coalition in 2024, intense speculations had arisen that he could fight elections from Phulpur, famous in history as the seat of Jawaharlal Nehru.
The seat, which covers a major part of the city of Prayagraj, earlier known as Allahabad, has a sizeable population of Kurmi caste, to which Kumar belongs, and is just about a 100 km from Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency.
Shravan Kumar, however, said, “It is not just Phulpur. During my recent UP visit, I got the sense that there are many other seats, including Fatehpur and Pratapgarh, where our party wants the CM to fight. They feel it will create a buzz across the state”.
The JD(U)’s allies in Bihar seem to have little problem.
Congress legislature party leader Shakil Ahmed Khan said, “Why not? When a person from Gujarat can contest and win from Varanasi, then we are so close to Uttar Pradesh”.
Notably, despite the seat’s association with Nehru, and after his death Vijaylaxmi Pandit, Phulpur has slipped from the grip of Congress which last won it in 1984, riding the wave generated by Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
RJD spokesman Shakti Yadav, when asked about what he thought of Kumar contesting from UP, said, “If the people of that state so wish, he must. It is a matter of pride for Bihar that our leader’s popularity transcends Bihar’s boundaries”.
Interestingly, while Kumar has denied any prime ministerial ambitions, his efforts to galvanize the entire opposition notwithstanding, the prospects of his playing a “national role” enthused not just the JD(U) but also the RJD, which views it as deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav’s pathway to the highest seat of power.
Meanwhile, the BJP was predictably annoyed at the talk of Kumar making a foray into UP, which not just sends the PM to Lok Sabha and has the highest number of seats, but is also ruled by Yogi Adityanath, seen as the party’s rising star.
Leader of the opposition in Bihar assembly Vijay Kumar Sinha and state unit chief Samrat Choudhary came out with separate, strongly worded statements, alleging that Kumar had lost his popularity on his home turf and would face humiliation if he moved to the adjoining state. The two BJP leaders, who have been miffed at Kumar scoring a point with Patna High Court’s thumbs up to the caste survey ordered by his government, accused his party of thinking in terms of “caste arithmetic” in UP where JD(U) has never been a force to reckon with.&nbsp;

I have nothing to do with what others say..." CM Kumar said while speaking to the reporters in Bihar's Patna.  He also did not attend the inauguration ceremony of the Vande Bharat Express in Patna on Sunday.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Union Minister Giriraj Singh reacted to Lalan Singh's remark stating that all doors to the BJP are closed for Nitish Kumar.&nbsp;
"BJP has clarified quite early that all doors to the BJP are closed for Nitish Kumar. This matter doesn't arise from our side, these things come out of their activities...We don't abuse Nitish ji or call him 'palturam'. That is what his nephew, who is now his Deputy CM, calls him. His political credibility is gone and that is why people make speculations and Lalu ji get scared..." Giriraj Singh said while speaking to reporters.  Last year, Nitish Kumar quit the NDA and joined the alliance named 'Mahagathbandhan' with the RJD.  'Mahagathbandhan' is a coalition of political parties including RJD, JDU and the Congress among others, formed ahead of the Bihar assembly polls in 2015.

As the serving CM he started his day by inaugurating new fire brigade engines at the citys veterinary college ground, where he recently held a massive party rally. On he visited Buxar for the inauguration of a tourism department project at a prominent temple – an initiative overseen by his deputy Tejashwi Yadav, who was notably absent.  Among those was senior BJP leader and Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey who refrained from commenting on the unfolding political turmoil. BJP state in charge Vinod Tawde, who was in Patna for a meeting chose not to disclose any details but attributed any break up" between Nitish Kumar and the opposition INDIA bloc to Congress.  At the time JD(U)s political adviser and spokesperson K C Tyagi announced in Delhi that the grand alliance government, in Bihar is teetering on collapse. He accused a group within the Congress leadership of consistently disrespecting Kumar stating, "The INDIA bloc is on the brink of collapsing. The coalition of parties in the INDIA bloc is almost breaking apart in Punjab, West Bengal and Bihar."  Upon Kumars return to Patna leaders from JD(U) gathered at the residence of the party president hinting at his imminent resignation as chief minister and a subsequent attempt to form a new government with support from BJP.  Leaders from RJD also assembled at the residence shared by vice president Rabri Devi, Tejashwi Yadav and Lalu Prasad. Patna: There is a lot of speculation that Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister of Bihar and the leader of the 'Mahagathbandhan' government might submit his resignation by Sunday morning. A reliable source close to the CM mentioned this on Saturday although they preferred to remain anonymous while talking to PTI. While there is a chance that he might resign late on Saturday it is more likely to happen by Sunday morning.  To prepare for his resignation, Kumar, who's also the president of JD(U) will hold a regular meeting with the legislature party. In addition government offices, including the secretariat have been asked to stay open on Sunday due to expected activity during the day. This surge in activity could potentially lead to the formation of a government with support from BJP.  Meanwhile at a party meeting state BJP leaders refrained from making an announcement regarding their support for Nitish Kumar if he withdraws from 'Mahagathbandhan'. Sources, within BJP revealed that top leadership has instructed them not to make any announcements until Kumar officially resigns. It's worth noting that Nitish Kumar had left NDA than three years ago.

Patna: In a comment aimed at Nitish Kumar, the President of JD(U) after his resignation as Bihars Chief Minister, Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad jokingly remarked on Sunday that the 'garbage has finally been thrown into the dustbin.'  Kumar decided to step down from his position as minister expressing dissatisfaction with the functioning of the Mahagathbandhan he had joined less than 18 months ago alongside the opposition bloc I.N.D.I.A.  "Refuse goes back to where it belongs—into the dustbin. Here's to the garbage within this group " Acharya shared on a social media platform.

 Earlier on Thursday she had posted remarks but later deleted them.  The RJD later clarified that Acharyas comments on media were directed towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and not Bihar CM Nitish Kumar.

 "The remarks made in a context are withdrawn when political interests manipulate them " explained an RJD spokesperson in response to questions about the deleted posts. In these posts Acharya did not mention any leader by name.   Screenshots of these deleted posts, in Hindi were widely circulated on media. One of these comments referred to 'those who are ideologically lost while claiming to be champions of socialism.' This was seen as a criticism of the Chief Minister of Bihar who is an ally of the RJD. The Chief Minister had expressed his disapproval of 'dynasty politics just a day before this.
