Bengaluru: In a setback to BJP leader B.S. Yediyurappa, a special court for cases against MPs/MLAs on Wednesday ordered the filing of case and investigation by the Lokayukta police, into allegations of misuse of power when he was Karnataka Chief Minister.
The special court's order came on a plea by social activist T.J. Abraham who has alleged that Yediyurappa had allegedly awarded a BDA housing project to Ramalingam Constructions in return for financial favours diverted through shell companies.
Abraham had previously approached the court seeking probe against Yediyurappa, his son B.Y. Vijayendra, Co-Operation Minister S.T. Somashekar and six others. However, the special court had dismissed the petition for not taking prior consent of the Governor. Subsequently, Abraham had appealed the High Court which had directed the special court to revisit the case.
Yediyurappa said that there is no truth in the allegations and he will emerge innocent, while expressing full faith in the judiciary. "It's a conspiracy against me," he said.—IANS

The division bench of HC Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi on Friday ordered the state government of Uttarakhand to submit its reply regarding the appointment of Lokayukta within three weeks.
The HC has also ordered the government to explain through an additional affidavit what it has done to date for the appointment of Lokayukta. In the affidavit, present the details of the year-wise expenditure incurred till March 31, 2023, from the formation of the institute. The next hearing of the case will be on May 8. —ANI

Bengaluru News: The Karnataka unit of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday lodged a complaint with the Lokayukta here alleging Rs 1,300 crore scam against former IAS officer and BJP ticket aspirant for Koratagere Assembly seat, Anil Kumar.

Dr. Vishwanth, AAP working president while talking to reporters said, "When Anil Kumar was at the helm in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in 2019-20, he was allegedly involved in Rs 1,300 crore scams."

"In 2019-20, senior IAS officer Anil Kumar was the commissioner of BBMP. It is almost certain that he will be the BJP candidate in Koratagere Assembly constituency. There were three major irregularities during his tenure as BBMP Commissioner," stated state communication in-charge Brijesh Kalappa.

"Rs 31.6 crore for smart parking was sanctioned. Although it does not cost that much money, an additional Rs two crore was released. Anil Kumar released it to the contractor company by name Buildings Control Solution India Pvt Ltd," he alleged.

"When Anil Kumar was the commissioner, there was a problem in the removal of rainwater silt. The contract for eight zones was awarded to a single firm named M/s. Yoga and Company at a cost of Rs 36 crore. Since the work was not done properly, Bengaluru had to face floods. People's tax money has been looted by releasing more money than required," Kalappa said.

"When Anil Kumar was commissioner, BBMP spent Rs 969 crore for the work of tube wells. There should be a proper investigation done into how such a huge amount of money was used. In this, Rs 49 crore was spent only at one place. Apart from this, a treatment centre was opened at the International Warehouse for the treatment of Covid.

"A huge amount of illegality has also taken place by spending crores of rupees. Irregularities worth Rs 1,300 crore have taken place when Anil Kumar was Commissioner. We demand the Lokayukta to investigate these matters," said Kalappa. IANS

Nainital: The Uttarakhand High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to appoint the Lokayukta within eight weeks. A bench of Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal expressed strong dissatisfaction over the delay in appointing the Lokayukta despite crores of rupees being spent over the office of the anti-corruption body. It asked the government to appoint a Lokayukta within eight weeks and make the institution functional. The court also ordered the state government to put on hold all expenditure in the Lokayukta office until the submission of a compliance report. The high court’s order came on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Haldwani (Gaulapar) resident and social worker Ravishankar Joshi. The petition stated that an annual expenditure of Rs 2 to 3 crore is being incurred in the name of the Lokayukta institution, but the state government has not yet appointed the Lokayukta. The PIL is scheduled to be heard next on August 10. Underlining the need for the appointment of a Lokayukta, the petition said all investigation agencies in the state are currently under the control of the government. It contended that no investigation agency in Uttarakhand has the authority to register a corruption case against officials without the prior permission of the government or file a charge sheet in any court after an investigation. —PTI&nbsp;

Nainital: The Uttarakhand High court on Friday asked the state government to appoint the Lokayukta within three months. The court also said the staff of the Lokayukta's office should not be paid until the appointment of the anti-corruption ombudsman is made. The government can assign them work from other departments and make payments accordingly, it said. The order was delivered by a division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Rakesh Thapliyal on a PIL which said crores of rupees were being spent on the office of the Lokayukta without the appointment of the head of the anti-corruption body. The State had asked the court for a leave of six months to appoint the Lokayukta. However, the division bench of the high court granted three months time for the purpose. Filed by Haldwani resident Ravi Shankar Joshi, the PIL said the state government has not yet appointed the Lokayukta despite spending an annual budget of Rs 2 to 3 crore in the name of the institution. It was further said in the petition that Uttarakhand is riddled with various scandals and even the smallest cases have to be brought to the High Court. The petition noted that currently all investigation agencies in the state are under the government's control. There is no such investigation agency in Uttarakhand at present that has the authority to register a corruption case against any bureaucrat without the government's prior permission, it said. Bengaluru: Karnataka Lokayukta special court on Tuesday issued non-bailable warrants against the Sasikala and Ilavarasi in connection with a bribery case during their imprisonment in central jail.
The court has also issued warrants against the persons who have given sureties.
It was alleged that Sasikala, former AIADMK general secretary, had given Rs 2 crore bribe to officers to avail special benefits inside the prison. It was also alleged that Sasikala and Ilavarasi had gone out for shopping from the jail.
Lokayukta Police have submitted a charge sheet to the court in this connection.
The Bengaluru Lokayukta court is looking into the case and Sasikala, Ilavarasi had not appeared before the court. The court had asked the Lokayukta officers to take custody of the accused and produce before the court.
The matter has been adjourned to October 5.
Sasikala and Ilavarasi were imprisoned for four years in the disproportionate assets case of former Tamil Nadu chief minister late Jayalalithaa.
The Karnataka High Court had earlier quashed the allegations against prison officers in connection with providing facilities to Sasikala and Ilavarasi.
Sasikala had also filed a petition before the High Court seeking quashing of proceedings against her in the case.&nbsp;
