Dehradun: Kumaon on Friday celebrated 'Bagwal' festival in which people hurl stones at each other in front of the Warahi Devi temple in Champawat district, injuring more than 200 persons.
Thousands of people participated in the festival after a gap of two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
About 230 people suffered injuries as some of the participating groups called 'clans' hurled stones at each other instead of fruits and flowers as directed by the district administration, officials said. At least three of those injured had to be referred to higher centres, they said.
Despite a ban on using stones, the locals manage to sneak into the fight with stones, they added.
The festival began aeons ago as a bloodletting ritual to please the presiding goddess.
Earlier, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami who is an MLA from Champawat inaugurated the fair in which people use stones to celebrate this unique festival. 'Bagwal' which means a fight with stones has been one of the most sought-after fairs of the region for ages.
The participants in the fight are called 'Ranbankuras', who sporting headbands and carrying bamboo shields, gather at Dubachaur field in front of the Warahi Devi temple in Devidhura village to start the mock fight. —PTI&nbsp;

Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday inaugurated Ranibagh Bhimtal Padampuri Lohaghat Pancheshwar Rajya Marg two-lane 'A' class loading steel girder bridge constructed under the Central Road Fund at a cost of Rs 72 crore in district Nainital.
Union Minister of State for Defense Ajay Bhatt was also present on the occasion.
The Chief Minister said, "With the commissioning of the two-lane bridge, people going to the hilly areas of Almora, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Champawat and Nainital will get a lot easier.
He also added, "This bridge is the lifeline of Kumaon, through which the entire business of Kumaon is connected. Often there used to be a jam due to the single lane bridge here, but now due to the construction of this bridge, the tourists going to the mountainous areas of Kumaon will also not have a problem with the jam." The Chief Minister said that due to the movement of heavy vehicles on this bridge, along with the economic and social development of the area, there would be all-round development of the area.
It is to be known that at present about 3,600 cars and jeeps, 2,500 two-wheelers, 2,000 small commercial vehicles and 150 buses and 1,750 trucks (two axles) etc., through the said old bridge, average 10,000 vehicles per day. With the construction of the said two-lane A class loading bridge, there will be an increase in the movement of multi axle trucks and other vehicles. —ANI

Mumbai: Actor Nitesh Pandey, who essayed the role of Dheeraj Kumar in the top rated television show 'Anupamaa', passed away due to cardiac arrest at the age of 51.

Reports claim that the actor suffered a massive cardiac arrest late on Tuesday night in Igatpuri near Nashik. He succumbed to the same instantly.

Nitesh started his journey with theatre in 1990. In 1995, he bagged the role of a detective in 'Tejas'. He went on to work in serials like 'Manzilein Apani Apani', 'Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani', 'Saaya' and 'Durgesh Nandini'.

Apart from television, he also worked in films. His work in the National Award winning film 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' received widespread appreciation. He also starred in 'Om Shanti Om' and 'Badhaai Do'.

He also worked in television show 'Pyar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyara Pyara' and also ran an independent production house named Dream Castle Productions.

Last seen in 'Anupamaa' and 'Pyar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyara Pyara', Nitesh, who has been a popular face in the television industry for over two decades, was from Almora Kumaon in Uttarakhand.

He is now survived by his actress-wife Arpita Pandey.

The two had met on a TV show 'Justajoo' after which they got married in 2003.

Nitesh was earlier married to actress Ashwini Kalsekar. IANS

London: A British Indian filmmaker’s semi-autobiographical documentary set in his birthplace in the foothills of the Himalayas to explore the tradition of Kumaoni poetry is to premiere in London on Monday. Lalit Mohan Joshi’s ‘Angwal’, which translates as embrace, sees the Londoner return to the hills of Kumaon in Uttarakhand to explore the poetic roots of his family. The film, shot by Rangoli Agarwal in the picturesque locales of Nainital, Ranikhet, Almora, Naukuchiatal, Malaunj, Shitalakhet and Sattal, will have its UK premiere at BFI Southbank as part of the South Asian Heritage Month – marked annually between July 18 and August 17 as a celebration of the diverse heritage and cultures that link the UK with the region. “Combining the spoken word with music that typifies the region, the film captures the responses and deep philosophical worldview of some representative poets in the face of a society undergoing profound change,” explains Joshi.  “The film also presents a bird’s eye view of the high points of Kumaoni poetry as I have interspersed the narrative through poetry, anecdotes and Kumaoni music, composed by Chandrashekhar Tiwari and Harish Pant,” he said. ‘Angwal’ profiles eminent poets such as the legendary Lokratna Pant ‘Gumani’, Shyamacharandutt Pant, Ramdutt Pant, Gauridutt Pande ‘Gaurda’, Charu Chandra Pande, Diva Bhatt, Dev Singh Pokharia and Tribhuwan Giri. Some poems have been featured as songs that provide thematic musical interludes. “It’s a rare film of poetry and literature, preserved in the rare dialect of Hindi language (Kumaoni),” says lyricist and poet Gulzar in praise of the film. Award-winning filmmaker Shyam Benegal appreciated the 74-minute documentary’s nostalgic setting. “It explores the rich culture and the incredible beauty of its landscape that has served as an inspiration to poets, singers and artists of the region in the flowering of their art. Beautiful meadows carpeted with flowers in the shadow of the mighty Himalayas which stand as immortal sentinels to protect these charming foothills with their sky-blue lakes and rushing streams of bubbling rivulets and waterfalls gurgling down to the plains. “‘Angwal’ is a loving ode to the Kumaon region of the Himalayas which Lalit Mohan Joshi and his ancestors can rightly claim as their own,” said Benegal. Joshi, the founder of the not-for-profit South Asian Cinema Foundation (SACF) in the UK, takes the reins of the script, narration and direction of the film, which is backed by his writer-historian wife Dr Kusum Pant Joshi’s sketches. —PTI&nbsp;

Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday held a high-level meeting over land law at his official residence in the state capital. Dehradun. According to sources, the CM directed officials that a large-scale public hearing should be held by the committee tasked with drafting the new land law, and opinions and suggestions from the public and experts across diverse fields should be actively sought and incorporated. The CM added that Garhwal and Kumaon commissioners should also be included in the decentralised system for land law. Further, on the instructions of the chief minister, it was decided that in the interest of the state and the public, till the submission of the report of the Land Law Committee or further orders, district magistrates will not allow the proposal of permission to persons outside Uttarakhand to purchase land for agriculture and horticulture purposes. Even earlier, CM Dhami had given instructions to purchase land only after background verification of the buyer. According to an amendment to the existing land laws in 2004, under Section 154 of the Uttar Pradesh Zamindari and Land System Act 1950, persons who are not holders of immovable property in Uttarakhand before September 12, 2003, are allowed to purchase land for agriculture and horticulture from the district officer concerned. There is also a provision for granting permission by the state government. A drafting committee has since been constituted by the state government to come up with new land laws for Uttarakhand. During the meeting, CM Dhami directed that the draft be prepared expeditiously by the committee after taking on board suggestions from experts and people from a wide spectrum of arenas or fields. He said all decisions by the government were being taken in the interest of the people. He added that the government was working continuously in this direction, considering the sentiments of the public. —ANI

Flowing through the heart of the Kumaon region the Saryu River begins its course at Sarmool located 15 km south of Nanda Kot. Haldwani: The Haldwani Civil Court has issued orders to confiscate the property of nine miscreants, including Abdul Malik and his son, the alleged mastermind of the violence that broke out in Banbhoolpura town of Haldwani area following the demolition of an allegedly "illegal structure" as part of an anti-encroachment drive on February 8. The court has permitted the police to take action against all the accused under sections 82, and 83 of CrPC. Earlier on Tuesday, the civil court issued non-bailable warrants against all nine accused. The latest development came days after the Municipal Corporation here issued a recovery notice of Rs 2.44 crore against Abdul Malik, a key accused in the violence at Haldwani, asking him to deposit the money to cover damage caused to government property during the clash. Meanwhile, Kumaon Commissioner Deepak Rawat on Wednesday initiated a magisterial inquiry into the violence. Five people were killed and dozens more injured after clashes, as per police. Following the violence, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had said that there is no room for 'miscreants' in the state. On Tuesday, a new police chowki was inaugurated by women police officials, including those who were injured during Haldwani violence on the land freed during the anti-encroachment drive. The site known as "Malik Ka Bagicha," where the violence erupted, has now been renamed by authorities and a police chowki has been set up. It came a day after the Chief Minister announced that a police station would be constructed at the place from which the illegal encroachment was removed. Earlier, Uttarakhand Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar stressed that the recent "violent" clashes were not "communal." As many as 30 people have been arrested, in connection with the violence in the Haldwani. The clashes and violence left five people dead and dozens injured. Several countrymade weapons and live rounds were recovered from those arrested, police said. The state government has asked the Centre for four additional companies of paramilitary forces to be deployed in the district. Violence erupted after the administration conducted an anti-encroachment drive in Banbhoolpura. After stone-pelting incidents, the torching of vehicles and a mob surrounding the local police station, the administration had issued a shoot-at-sight order.

People can present evidence regarding the incident by contacting him on the same. "Violence had broken out in Haldwani during the anti-encroachment drive. The government has handed over the magisterial investigation on the same. Probe into the entire matter has been initiated," Deepak Rawt said. On Tuesday, a new police chowki was inaugurated by women police officials, including those who were injured during Haldwani violence at a land freed from encroachment during the anti-encroachment drive. Uttarakhand Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar stressed that the recent "violent" clashes were not "communal." The top police official said that they have registered three first information reports (FIR) in connection with the violence, adding that "action will not be taken against innocent people." Urging the "law-abiding citizens" to cooperate in the police investigation, he said, "We are trying to restore normalcy in the area. The curfew is being periodically relaxed. The Internet has been restored. We also urge the law-abiding citizens to come forward and cooperate in the police investigation."
