Patna: &nbsp;Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) of Bihar raided the office and residence of jail superintendent of Saharsa on Friday morning.The SVU official claimed that the action was taken against Saharsa jail superintendent Suresh Chaudhary following an FIR of disproportionate assets registered against him at the police station in Patna."During the raid, we have obtained proof of more than Rs 1.5 crore worth of properties, cash and jewellery in his name," an official of SVU said."At present, two separate teams are raiding his official residence in Saharsa and native place in Brahmpur in Muzaffarpur district.In another incident, the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) conducted raids at the residence of a former SHO of the Bihta police station in Patna and native place in Muzaffarpur district.Former Bihta SHO Awadhesh Kumar Jha is facing charges of having relations with sand mafias and having amassed crores of Rupees. Bengaluru: Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Tuesday gave his assent to the ordinance that gave effect to the Karnataka Right to Freedom of Religion Bill, 2021, commonly known as the anti-conversion bill. The bill was passed in the assembly in December last year but was pending before the council where the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is one short of a majority. The Karnataka government promulgated the Karnataka Protection of Right To Freedom of Religion Ordinance on May 12.The governor's nod came a day after the Bengaluru Archbishop, Peter Machado along with a Christian delegation called on him requesting him to hold back the ordinance and not to give his approval. According to the government note, the ordinance is for protection of right to freedom of religion and prohibition of unlawful conversion from one religion to another by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or by any fraudulent means. "Whereas the Karnataka legislative assembly and the Karnataka legislative council are not in session and the honourable governor of Karnataka is satisfied that the circumstances exist which render it necessary for him to take immediate action to promulgate the Ordinance for the purposes hereinafter appearing,” the gazzette notification read.The ordinance says that any converted person, his parents, brother, sister or any other person who is related to him by blood, marriage or adoption or in any form associated or colleague may lodge a complaint of such conversion. The violators will be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term of three years but which may extend to five years and shall also be liable to fine of Rs 25,000. With regard to mass conversion, the punishment stretches up to the imprisonment of either description for a term of three years but which may extend to ten years and "shall also be liable to fine of Rs one lakh". "The court shall also grant appropriate compensation payable by the accused to the victim of said conversion which may extend to maximum of Rs five lakh and shall be in addition to fine," the ordinance read. Further, whoever having been previously convicted of an offence under this ordinance is again convicted of an offence punishable under this ordinance will be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term of not less than five years and will also be liable to a fine of Rs two lakh. The offences committed under the ordinance are cognisable and non-bailable. Whoever desires to convert his religion, will have to give a declaration in Form-I at least thirty days in advance to the District Magistrate or the Additional District Magistrate specially authorised by the District Magistrate of his residing district or place of birth within the state.The religious converter who performs conversion ceremony for converting any person of one religion to another religion, should give thirty days advance notice in Form-2 of such intended conversion, to the district magistrate or the additional district magistrate, specially authorised by the District Magistrate of the district from where the proposed converter hails, the ordinance said. The District Magistrate, after receiving the information will notify proposed religious conversion on the notice board of the office of the District Magistrate and in the office of the Tahsildar calling for objections. If any objections are received within 30 days, he will get an inquiry conducted through officials of Revenue or Social Welfare Department with regard to genuine intention, purpose and cause of the proposed conversion."If the District Magistrate comes to a conclusion based on the said inquiry of the commission of an offence under this Ordinance, he shall cause the concerned police authorities to initiate criminal action for contravention of the provisions of section 3," the ordinance said. Machado on Monday alleged that some groups in Karnataka want to sideline minorities. The Archbishop had said that approaching court will be one of the options to stop the promulgation of the ordinance."If the ordinance is promulgated, then, we surely have to see ways and means of finding resources for us from different sides and legal route is also one of the things we may take to," he told reporters on Monday. The Congress Karnataka unit had been opposing the bill calling it "draconian" and "anti-constitution".—PTI

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Thursday imposed a one-year sentence on cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu in a 1988 road rage case. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and S K Kaul allowed the review plea filed by the victim's family on the issue of the sentence awarded to Sidhu.Though the apex court had in May 2018 held Sidhu guilty of the offence of "voluntarily causing hurt" to a 65-year-old man in the case, it spared him a jail term and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000.—PTI

With this decision of bail, the Supreme Court has given new standards to justice. It is certain that he will be acquitted in all other false cases. The jailor of Sitapur prison, R S Yadav, said the release order was received around 11 pm on Thursday and after following all procedures, Khan was released around 8 am on Friday. After his release, Khan first visited the house of ex-SP MLA Anoop Gupta before departing for his native Rampur. Gupta had been in constant touch with Khan ever since he was lodged in Sitapur Jail. During his 45-minute stay at Gupta's house, Khan met his supporters and well wishers who had come here from different places and had breakfast before heading to Rampur. Earlier, when Abdullah Azam was released from Sitapur he had also visited Gupta's home.Shivpal Singh Yadav later posted on Twitter pictures with Khan outside the jail. The Supreme Court had granted Khan interim bail on Thursday. A local MP-MLA court had sent a letter to the Sitapur Jail administration late on Thursday night seeking the release of the senior SP leader.Khan was lodged in jail for the last 27 months in connection with several cases, including that of land grabbing. The grant of the interim bail by the Supreme Court paved the way for his release from prison.—PTI

Dispur: The headmistress of a school in Goalpara district of Assam was arrested and sent to jail for bringing cooked beef to school as her lunch, officials said on Thursday.Legal experts and opposition parties in Assam have slammed the police for arresting the teacher and the judiciary for sending her to jail as consumption of beef, even in public places, is not illegal in the state.The headmistress, Daliman Nessa, allegedly brought cooked beef during the 'Gunotsav 2022', a state-wide exercise to evaluate school performance held between May 11 and May 14. She was taken to the police station on May 16 after a complaint was lodged against her.Consumption of beef is not illegal in Assam, but the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, bans cattle slaughter and sale of beef in areas where Hindus, Jains and Sikhs are in a majority and in areas within a five-km radius of a temple or&nbsp;satra&nbsp;(Vaishnavite monastery).Additional Superintendent of Police Mrinal Deka said the president of the management committee of Hurkachungi Middle English School in Lakhipur police station area had lodged a complaint against the headmistress alleging that she had brought beef for lunch. "We brought her to the police station on May 16. After questioning she was arrested and the court sent her to judicial custody on the next day," he added.A case was registered under Sections 295(A) (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) and 153(A) (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) of the Indian Penal Code. Senior Advocate Angshuman Bora told&nbsp;PTI&nbsp;that both police and judiciary have faulted in the case as Nessa had not committed any offence. "Consumption of beef in public places is not an offence in Assam. The IPC sections applied are totally wrong. The judiciary should have granted her bail on the first appearance itself as there was no remand necessary," he added. Gauhati High Court Advocate Rakhee Sirauthia Chowdhury too termed the arrest as wrong under the mentioned sections, even if the police statement is considered to be factual. "She did not instigate anyone nor offered the beef to other colleagues. It was her personal choice to consume the meat," she added.The opposition Congress said that the new act only controls slaughter, sale and transportation of cattle in a certain way, but consumption is not prohibited by law. "The judiciary should not act above the laws. If that happens, then what is the point of enacting the laws in the Assembly? It gives a wrong impression of the laws and overall image of Assam," Congress working president Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha said. Loopholes in the laws have led to the misuse of the acts by different agencies, he added. Assam Jatiya Parishad spokesperson Ziaur Rahman said The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021 has not been notified yet as the rules are not framed till now. "Even if the act was notified, she is free to consume whatever she likes. Police and judiciary interfered with her freedom of choice to have food. This was unconstitutional. "Moreover, certain vested interest groups at the behest of the party in power are trying to create communal tension in the state. Police and judiciary should not be influenced by this," he added.—PTI

Sidhu has been lodged in the barrack with four other prisoners, said the sources.He didn't have dinner as he had already taken his meal, they said, adding that the former state Congress chief is prisoner number 1,37,683. The 58-year-old former cricketer on Friday had&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rediff.com/news/report/sidhu-seeks-time-in-sc-to-surrender-after-jail-term/20220520.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(71, 123, 196);">surrendered before a court</a>&nbsp;in Patiala and later sent to the Patiala Central Jail. He was sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court in the 1988 road-rage case.As Sidhu has to undergo rigorous imprisonment, he will also have to work in the prison. Another high-profile prisoner lodged in jail here in connection with a drug case is Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who had contested against Sidhu from Amritsar East. Sidhu and Majithia had both lost the elections to Aam Aadmi Party's Jeevan Jyot Kaur. The SC had on Thursday sentenced Sidhu to one-year rigorous imprisonment in the 34-year-old case, saying any undue sympathy in imposing an inadequate sentence would do more harm to the justice system and undermine the public confidence in the efficacy of law. A 65-year-old man, Gurnam Singh, had died in the incident. When reporters sought Sidhu's reaction to the verdict on Thursday, he had declined to comment. However, he had later tweeted to say he 'will submit to the majesty of the law'. Though the apex court had in May 2018 held Sidhu guilty of the offence of 'voluntarily causing hurt' to the man, it had spared him a jail term and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000. Gurnam Singh's family had sought a review of the judgment, which was allowed by the SC. Sidhu, a former BJP MP, had switched over to the Congress ahead of the 2017 assembly polls. Sidhu began his political innings in 2004, contesting the Lok Sabha elections on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket from Amritsar, where he shifted his base from Patiala. He defeated Congress heavyweight R L Bhatia. The former cricketer's relationship with the Badal family soured even though the Shiromani Akali Dal was a BJP ally then. And then he had problems with the BJP after the party fielded Arun Jaitley from Amritsar in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Though he was accommodated in the Rajya Sabha later, the maverick politician quit the party to join the Congress.—PTI

New Delhi: Kashmiri Separatist leader Yasin Malik, who wanted Jammu and Kashmir to be a ‘separate’ territory, will now spend the rest of his life, all alone, ‘separated’ from the rest of the world at Jail No. 7 of the Tihar Prison. Malik, 56, was sentenced to life on Wednesday by a special NIA court in Delhi. During the previous hearing, Malik told the Court that he was not contesting the charges levelled against him. He may not even challenge the sentencing in higher courts as he has himself pleaded guilty which means by all means, Malik will spend the rest of his life in Jail.But the catch is, Malik will not be just separated from the outside world, he is even kept alone inside the prison, away from nearly 13,000 prisoners. “He is already in jail no.7 and will continue there presently. He is alone in his cell,” Director General (Prisons), Sandeep Goyal, told IANS. The Tihar prison’s Jail Number 7 has been always in the limelight as it has housed several high-profile prisoners, including former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, former Union Minister A. Raja, Sahara head Subrata Roy, Christian Michel among several others. On October 12, as many as 32 Tihar Jail officials were found complicit with the former Unitech promoters. It was alleged that the Chandra brothers, Ajay Chandra and Sanjay Chandra, were conducting business from inside the Tihar Jail in connivance with the prison staff. Interestingly, all the said 32 jail officials were posted in Tihar’s jail number 7.The Court in its Wednesday’s sentencing had awarded two life sentences and five punishments of 10 years of ‘Rigorous Imprisonment’ each to the convict. Rigorous imprisonment means confinement of the offender in a manner that increases the hardship of the jail term based upon the nature of the offence by subjecting the offender to special arrangements in the jail. However, despite court orders, Malik will not be given any work inside the prison. “He won’t be assigned work at all due to security reasons,” the top prison official said, adding the work is assigned subject to security concerns and the decision is taken as per jail rules.As per the jail conduct report of Yasin Malik, his conduct has been satisfactory inside the jail. The jail records depict that no jail punishment has been recorded against him. “Regarding the convict’s inclination towards reformation, it is submitted that during his incarceration, behaviour of convict towards co-inmates as well as jail administration has remained cordial and peaceful. Convict seems to be inclined towards reformation,” the sentence order read. Meanwhile, sources said that Tihar authorities have enhanced security arrangements outside Malik’s ward in Jail No 7. “He will be kept under maximum security cover,” sources said. They also infomed that the convicted terrorist will always be under the watch through CCTV cameras.—IANS

New Delhi: A court here on Thursday reserved the quantum of sentence to former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala, who was convicted in a disproportionate assets case. After the submissions of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court is set to pronounce the order on Friday. In the course of the hearing, the probe agency opposed Chautala’s lawyer who argued for a concession on medical grounds for the 87-year-old politician. Instead, the Central agency argued for maximum punishment, pointing out that the convict is a public figure. If the punishment is less for him, it would send a wrong message to society. It was also argued that Chautala is convicted for the second time and does not have a clean image. On May 19, the court had reserved its verdict in this case. As per the charge sheet filed by the CBI, Chautala is responsible for amassing assets worth Rs 6.09 crore (disproportionate to his legitimate source of income) between 1993 and 2006. In May 2019, the Enforcement Directorate had attached over Rs 3.6 crore worth of properties of the former Chief Minister located in New Delhi, Panchkula, and Sirsa.Chautala was also convicted in the JBT scam in January 2013. In 2008, Chautala and 53 others were charged in connection with the appointment of 3,206 junior basic trained teachers in Haryana from 1999 to 2000. In January 2013, a court sentenced Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Singh Chautala to ten years imprisonment under various provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. Chautala was found guilty of illegally recruiting over 3,000 unqualified teachers. Out on parole, Chautala was released from Tihar Jail on July 2, 2021 from a 10-year prison sentence after completing due formalities. He was the Chief Minister of Haryana four times between 1989 to 2005. His grandson Dushyant Chautala is the Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana.—IANS

Since Brar is a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, Delhi Police Special Cell suspecting the involvement of the gang is questioning gangster Bishnoi and his aides Kala Jathedi and Kala Rana in connection with Moosewala's murder.Bishnoi is currently lodged in a jail in Rajas-than Moosewala Murder Plot The Punjab Police on Sunday said that the attack on Moosewala seemed to be due to an inter-gang war.On Monday, the Delhi Police said that it suspected that the murder of Moosewala has link with the last year's killing of Vikramjit alias Vicky Middukhera.According to the Delhi police special cell both the names of Moosewala and his manager, Shaganpreet came up in connection with the murder of Vicky in August last year.A special Cell of the Delhi Police recently became aware of the nexus of notorious gangster Neeraj Bawania and Tillu Tajpuria.Bawania and Tajpuria teamed up with different gangsters Kaushal Chaudhary, Davinder Bhambia, and Lucky Patial from Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.The Delhi Police had arrested about a dozen miscreants of this five-member gang in connection with the murder of Vicky.Those arrested were identified as sharpshooter Sajjan Singh alias Bholu, Anil Kumar alias Lath and Ajay Kumar alias Sunny Kaushal.During interrogation, the arrested trio had revealed about the involvement of a Moose Wala and his manager in the Vicky murder case. Moose Wala's manager was named as accused in the FIR registered in this case.As per reports, Vicky was a close friend of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi who is serving time in jail in Bharatpur, Rajasthan since 2017 for various crimes.In a post on his purported Facebook page, gangster Bishnoi has taken responsibility for the murder of singer Moose Wala.Meanwhile, a forensic team on Monday investigated the vehicle which Moose Wala was driving when he was shot dead in Mansa village.The Punjab Police has constituted a three-member SIT to probe the killing.—ANI

Panaji: The Goa Police on Thursday arrested a jail security guard for allegedly supplying drugs to a prisoner of Colvale jail in North Goa, a police officer said. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jivba Dalvi, Colvale Police have arrested one Sandesh Varak, 28, in this connection. “After receiving information that the accused person was coming with drugs to supply to a prisoner, a raid was conducted by police, wherein we found ‘Ganja’ weighing 208 grams and 7 grams of cocaine, all valued at Rs 1,04,000, in his possession,” Dalvi said.The accused person was employed by Goa human resource development corporation, and he was posted at Colvale Jail. Dalvi said that during investigation it was revealed that the accused person had conspired with a prisoner Satish Koli in Colvale Jail to procure and supply the drugs. “We will take custody of Satish Koli to investigate this matter,” Dalvi said. The case has been registered under sections 20(b)(ii)(A) of NDPS act.—IANS

Patna:&nbsp;In a bid to control crime, the prison department of Bihar has shifted 23 hardcore criminals from Patna to the high-security Bhagalpur Central Jail. The department took the decision following recommendation of Patna SSP Manavjeet Singh Dhillon.Keeping in view of rising crime incidents in Patna and the adjoining districts, the SSP said that jail operated crimes cannot be ruled out. He further said that the hardcore gangsters lodged in the Patna Beur Jail are planning the crimes and their execution is being done by gang members. The 23 inmates shifted on Sunday night included two under trial prisoners.Some of the hardcore gangsters are Sanjeet Rai, Vijay Singh, Saket Kumar alias Pintu and Ajay Chaudhary. Earlier, the department had already 20 criminals to the Bhagalpur prison. It has shortlisted 62 inmates lodged in the Patna jail, majority serving life terms, to be shifted to other prisons across the state.—IANS

Bengaluru: Expressing displeasure that government officials were not following the orders of the high court, a division bench of the Karnataka HC on Monday made an observation that "it's time an IAS officer is sent to jail". A single-judge bench ordered the state on July 19, 2021, to issue a notification within two months of a draft amendment rules regarding merging Group-C with Group-B jobs in the various municipalities of the state. An employees association of the Karnataka city municipality workers had filed a contempt petition as the single judge order was not followed.The matter came up for hearing on May 31, 2022, but the state government had failed to issue the notification.The HC had posted the hearing to June 6 and directed additional chief secretary Rakesh Singh of the urban development department and MS Archana, director of municipal administration to be present.On Monday, both the officers were present before the division bench of the court headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi.Additional advocate general Dhyan Chinnappa informed the court that the draft rules have been framed and notified on June 3.Objections can be filed within 15 days.An affidavit stating this was submitted to the court.The court recorded the submission and adjourned the case by six weeks. The court also directed that the officers should be present in court on the next date of hearing too. During the hearing on Monday, the court observed that officers were not taking court orders seriously.It was because they were summoned to court that the court order was followed to an extent.The HC said, "It is time an IAS officer is sent to jail", as it made no secret of its displeasure about the behaviour of government officers not following court orders.—PTI

Jaipur: Three undertrial prisoners escaped on Thursday from the Banswara district jail making a hole in the wall and using blankets for rope.Jailer Man Singh said that the accused loosened some stones in a wall of the barrack using plates, removed some of the stones from near the window, and escaped."They jumped an inner boundary wall 12 feet tall and then the outer wall of 20 feet with the help of a rope they made with blankets," he said.Parmesh (22), Kamlesh (20), and Praveen (19) were under judicial custody in different cases.Singh said that the incident occurred between 2 am and 3 am and came to light at around 5 am. Local police were informed about the incident and the accused are being searched for, he added.—PTI

Islamabad: Pakistan in a goodwill gesture on Sunday released 20 Indian fishermen who have been languishing in a jail here for the last five years for allegedly fishing illegally in the country's waters.The twenty fishermen were lodged at Malir district jail in the Landhi area of Karachi. They were sent to Lahore on their way to the Wagah border where they will be handed over to the Indian authorities.Jail superintendent Muhammad Irshad said the fishermen were released on the order of the federal government."They were in jail for the last five years. Today, they were handed over to the Edhi trust which will be responsible for taking them to Lahore under police escort," he said.Irshad said the fishermen were arrested by the Maritime Security Force in June 2018 and then jailed for fishing illegally in Pakistan's territorial waters.Faisal Edhi, who heads the welfare foundation, said all expenses and travelling of the Indian fishermen were being taken care of by them.Edhi trust is a non-profit social welfare organisation.Pakistan and India regularly arrest rival fishermen for violating the maritime boundary which is poorly marked at some points. —PTI

Abuja : Nigerian government on Wednesday said at least 300 inmates were on the run after unknown gunmen attacked a jail in the capital city Abuja.The attackers stormed the Kuje Custodial Center in Abuja on Tuesday night, Xinhua news agency reported.The attackers freed about 600 inmates but half the number of fleeing inmates were re-arrested, Shuaibu Belgore, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Interior, told reporters during a visit to the facility on Wednesday. The anti-terror agency carried out searches on the premises of suspects in Udaipur .Digital devices (mobile phones, laptops and SIM cards) and other incriminating materials were claimed to have been seized by the NIA during the searches .The case pertains to the killing of Kanhaiyya Lal Teli, 47, at his shop in Maldas Street in Udaipur on June 28.The victim was killed as he reportedly had shared a social media post in support of Nupur Sharma-- former BJP leader who had made controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad .The case was initially registered on June 29 at Udaipur's Dhanmandi Police Station. The NIA re-registered the case on June 29 and took over the probe.The NIA has so far arrested seven individuals in the killing of Kanhaiyya Lal Teli, who was hacked to death.On July 9, the anti-terror agency said it arrested 7th accused Farhad Mohammad Sheikh alias Babla, 31, from Udaipur. Mohammad was a close criminal associate of one of the main killers Riyaz Attari and was an active part of the conspiracy to kill Kanhaiyya Lal.Earlier six accused persons were arrested in this case on June 29; July 1, and July 4. The main killers involved in the case-- Riyaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad-- were taken into custody on June 29 by police and then by the NIA during the investigation of the case. The NIA, however, has not shared the details about the accused arrested on July 1 and July 4.NIA FIR mentions that "assailants involved in the 'brutal' murder of Kanhaiyya Lal, circulated a video of the assault with assertion to promote "enmity on religious ground" and to create "panic and terror" amongst the masses across the country.The FIR is based on the complaint of Kanhaiyya's son Yash Teli, a resident of Rajasthan's Housing Board Colony, regarding the brutal killing of his father by two assailants-- Riyaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad-- armed with sharp weapons at his shop 'Suprim Tailor', Bhoot Mahal Maaldas street, Udaipur.Two workers of the shop were also injured by the assailants in the incident, mentions the FIR.The brutal killing took place on June 28 (Tuesday) between 3 pm and 3.30 pm, and the information was received at NIA through an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs' Counter-Terrorism and Counter Radicalization Division (CTCR) on June 29.Soon after committing the crime, the two accused, both residents of Udaipur, posted a video on social media boasting about the "beheading" and threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi's life as well.
