Jerusalem (The Hawk): Building a working quantum computer is such a daunting venture that many believe it’s only for tech giants and superpowers, something on a scale beyond Israel’s reach. Prof. Roee Ozeri of the Weizmann Institute of Science begs to differ: “One of the world’s first computers, WEIZAC, was built here in the 1950s, when all Israel had was swamps and camels. Today Israel is a technological empire; there’s no reason we shouldn’t be front-runners in the quantum computing race.”In a project reported today in PRX Quantum, Ozeri’s team succeeded in building a quantum computer – one of about 30 such machines in the world, and one of less than 10 to rely on an advanced technology known as ion traps. An even larger computer is already in the works in Ozeri’s lab, and this one already has a name: In a tribute to WEIZAC, inaugurated at Weizmann back in 1955, the scientists plan to call it WeizQC.Quantum computers promise to reach computational complexity that is unthinkable using even the most powerful classical computers. This level of ability is known as the “quantum advantage.” It should bring about a slew of applications, from designing unbreakable codes and predicting market fluctuations to accelerating the development of new drugs, materials and artificial intelligence systems. That’s because in contrast to today’s computers, which are limited by the boundaries of classical physics, quantum computers obey an entirely different set of laws – those of quantum mechanics, which rule the microscopic world. In our familiar world, humans, cats or even bits, the basic units of information in classical computing, can only be in one place at a time. In contrast, quantum bits, known as qubits, can be simultaneously present in more than one position or state, which enables them to conduct multiple calculations in parallel, opening the door to vast computing power.Ozeri became a pioneer of quantum computing research in Israel some 15 years ago after returning from the United States, where he had conducted his postdoctoral studies under the guidance of Nobel laureate David Wineland. “Then, quantum computing was done in university labs,” Ozeri says. “But in the past decade, commercial companies such as Google, Amazon and IBM joined the race to build a quantum computer, while the United States, China and the European Union initiated massively funded strategic programs to advance the field.”Despite this expansion of research, substantial challenges remain. One of the greatest obstacles is the extreme sensitivity of quantum computers to environmental noise, which stands in the way of building large, complex systems. In a project led by Dr. Tom Manovitz and research student Yotam Shapira, Ozeri’s team addressed this challenge by introducing two innovations, both successfully implemented in the quantum computer the researchers have built in their lab.Watch out, it’s a trapToday’s computers all rely on the same basic hardware, but in the field of quantum computing, several different technologies still compete for top ranking. Among the leading contestants are ion traps, systems in which each ion – that is, each electrically charged atom – represents a single qubit. Just as regular bits can move between two states, 0 and 1, so ion-based qubits can switch between different states, defined by different flight paths of an electron around the atomic nucleus. Instead of standard electronics, qubit switching in an ion trap is done with lasers. These qubit-based operations are called logic gates. Complex computations require gates involving more than one qubit, but such operations are sensitive, and even the tiniest environmental noise will cause the system to lose its quantum nature. To prevent this from happening, the Weizmann researchers developed a pattern of laser pulses that keeps the logic gates robust and stable.Yet even when the gates are robust, the system’s high sensitivity can cause it to accumulate errors that threaten to undo its quantum nature. To correct an error, one must first find it, a task that requires measuring the qubits. But there is a catch: Measuring constitutes an invasive act that inevitably leads to the loss of the system’s quantum nature. The solution is to measure only some of the qubits, not all. In trapped-ion-based computers, the measurements are performed by illuminating the ions and determining the states of the qubits by the resulting, if any, scattering of light. In their new computer, the Weizmann scientists replaced the light detectors that capture the states of individual ions with a camera-based array that detects all the qubits simultaneously. Then, to protect the system’s quantum nature, they concealed some of the qubits from the camera. They also developed a way to overcome the slow-down in data processing that had been associated with camera-based arrays: They added electronic circuits that rapidly read out and process the cameras’ information, speeding up error correction.The Weizmann computer is a five-qubit machine, roughly the level achieved by IBM’s version when the company first started offering quantum computing as a cloud service. WeizQC, which is currently being built in Ozeri’s lab, is scheduled to work with 64 qubits. It is expected to demonstrate the quantum advantage, which until now has only been achieved by computers built in two labs: at Google and at the University of Science and Technology of China.Project participants included research student Lior Gazit, Dr. Nitzan Akerman and other students and scientists from Ozeri’s lab in Weizmann’s Physics of Complex Systems Department. Theoretical research accompanying the project was conducted by Prof. Ady Stern of Weizmann’s Condensed Matter Physics Department. Prof. Ozeri’s research is supported by the Willner Family Leadership Institute for the Weizmann Institute of Science and by the Rosa and Emilio Segre Research Award.

Dehradun / New Delhi (The Hawk): Little more than a year after the deadly ice-rock mass avalanche in Chamoli district in the Uttarakhand state that led to a significant causality of more than 200 people and a substantial economic loss scientists have been able to decode the reason behind the disaster.The scientists have found that the region was seismically active before the disaster hit. They also found a noteworthy sequence of precursory signals of rock-ice detachment preceded by a formation of a new structure via self-assembly or self-organization called the dynamic nucleation phase.Retreating Himalayan glaciers and associated melt along with unstable slopes are subject to trigger landslides by rainfall during monsoon or by induced seismicity in the region. Also, the snow, ice and rock avalanches may threaten people and infrastructure downstream in mountainous areas worldwide. This is why the area requires constant monitoring of seismicity as well as glacier status.Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG), since its inception, has been actively involved in understanding the processes responsible behind such disaster and focusing on detecting significant and unfelt activities with a dense network of seismic stations in the vicinity of Himalayan glaciers. As a part of this process they have also tried to trace the reasons behind the disaster that took place on February 7 2021,The group of 9 scientists analised the satellite images of the avalanche zone and found that it shows gradual growth of cracks and the joint near the crown of the weak wedge that has controlled the head scarp for the last 5 years. These cracks further started to open up and led to successive advancement of a weak zone near the crown of the wedge failure. The initiation of ice-rock mass avalanche has been recorded as seismic precursors, which were continuously active for 2.30 Hr, before the main detachment took place. Scientists analyzed and verified the seismic signals with field evidence to evaluate the velocity of dynamic flows and associated impacts. Such high-quality seismic data allowed to reconstruct the complete chronological sequence and evaluate effects since the initiation to the advancement of debris flow. The high-flow intensity of the flood disturbed the stability of the Raini village, and thus the area is prone to landslides, especially during the monsoon.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Seismic monitoring systems are well suited to detect mass movements such as debris flow, landslides, avalanches, etc. The ability to see such activities by a seismic network before the main failure could provide a scope for developing an early warning system for the region. An integrated early warning system can alert the people towards the mitigation of any such impending disaster. The EWS should be based on seismic data from the seismometers, hydrological data from automatic water level recorders and meteorological data from automatic weather stations installed as a network in the vicinity of a glacierised basin of the Himalaya.

Chennai(the Hawk): Indian Institute of Technology Madras Researchers have launched India’s first indigenously developed Polycentric Prosthetic Knee, which aims to improve the quality of life for thousands of above-knee amputees. Called ‘Kadam,’ this ‘Made in India’ product is a polycentric knee for Above Knee Prosthesis developed in association with Society for Biomedical Technology (SBMT) and Mobility India.Kadam makes it possible for above-knee amputees to walk with a comfortable gait. Not just mobility, it also aims to improve the quality of life of users through increased community participation, access to education, livelihood opportunities and overall well-being.It was developed by a team at TTK Center for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) at IIT Madras, which also developed and commercialized ‘Arise,’ the country's first standing wheelchair and NeoFly-NeoBolt: active wheelchair and motorized add-on for seamless indoor-outdoor mobility. R2D2 is involved in research related to human movement, and the design and development of rehabilitation and assistive devices for people with movement impairments.SBMT, which supported the development, was established under DRDO by former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam to enable indigenous medical device development. Mobility India, an NGO in Bengaluru, will mass manufacture and take Kadam to the market along with overseeing the processes of fitment and training and ensuring easy access for the users.Kadam was launched in the IIT Madras campus today (8th April 2022) by Thiru. Roorkee (The Hawk): Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee)and Y. B. Scientific R&amp;D Solutions, Roorkee, jointly developed PRAYASPR. It is a process to produce cement free paver block and wall tiles from waste polyethylene packets/ milk packets and oil packets in an environment friendly way. The waste plastics have been used as a binder and waste stone dust has been used as additives along with some dying chemicals in the development. The PRAYASPR technology reduces CO2footprint by around one third with respect to concrete paver blocks.&nbsp;These products have also a better interlocking and aesthetic look, long lifetime.&nbsp;These are non-breakable and have fair resale value.To prepare one paver block around 250 g of waste plastics is used and to cover a 1 sq ft surface area around 1.5 kg of waste plastics will be needed. The production cost of the paver black is around Rs 45per sq ft which is highly competitive with the conventional paver blocks available in the market. Per piece, the production price is around Rs 7-8. The tiles will be more economic than the paver blocks with per square feet production cost of around Rs 14 only. Both small scale and large-scale production modules are available with an initial capital investment of Rs 25 lakhs and Rs 40 lakhs, respectively. The payback period is around 3.5 years for small scale and 2.5 years for large scale plants, respectively.The team members included Prof. Prasenjit Mondal, Mr. Hemant Goyal, Navneeta Lal, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Roorkee and Mr. Yash Dua, Y.B. It can be an attractive option for managing plastic wastes by the waste producers as per the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2021. Pointing out the necessity for PRAYASPR, Yash Dua, Y.B. Scientific R&amp;D Solution Roorkee, Ramnagar, said,“The plastic waste generated in India was close to 34 lakh tons in the year 2019-20 with an annual increase of more than 21%. And this plastic waste contains low density polyethylene (LDPE) which creates a problem by choking sewer lines. Moreover, in India waste plastics form widespread littering on the landscape due to the lack of proper management techniques producing harmful environmental consequences. Thus, a sustainable route for waste plastics management was a necessity which has been realized with PRAYASPR under the auspices of IIT Roorkee."Team member, Prof. Prasenjit Mondal, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Roorkee, explained, "The technology involves recycling of waste polyethylene packets for development of cement less paver blocks taking the sustainable route. Plastic packets are first shredded to form granules which are then mixed with additives to soften and further form a slurry which is then molded in a hydraulic press to form blocks. The products may be used in building premises, monument premises, landscapes, public gardens and parks, domestic drives, paths and floor tiles, among others in an eco-friendly way”.

Babraham (Cambridge): Scientists at Babraham Institute have developed a new technique for rejuvenating skin cells. This technique has allowed scientists to rewind the cellular biological clock by around 30 years according to molecular measures, significantly longer than previous reprogramming methods.The results of the research were published in the journal, 'eLife'.Scientists have been able to partly restore the function of older cells, as well as rejuvenate the molecular measures of biological age.As we age, our cells' ability to function declines and the genome accumulates marks of ageing. Regenerative biology aims to repair or replace cells including old ones. One of the most important tools in regenerative biology is our ability to create 'induced' stem cells.The process is a result of several steps, each erasing some of the marks that make cells specialised. In theory, these stem cells have the potential to become any cell type, but scientists aren't yet able to reliably recreate the conditions to re-differentiate stem cells into all cell types.The new method, based on the Nobel Prize-winning technique scientists use to make stem cells, overcomes the problem of entirely erasing cell identity by halting reprogramming part of the way through the process. This allowed researchers to find the precise balance between reprogramming cells, making them biologically younger, while still being able to regain their specialised cell function.In 2007, Shinya Yamanaka was the first scientist to turn normal cells, which have a specific function, into stem cells that have the special ability to develop into any cell type. The full process of stem cell reprogramming takes around 50 days using four key molecules called the Yamanaka factors.The new method, called 'maturation phase transient reprogramming', exposes cells to Yamanaka factors for just 13 days. At this point, age-related changes are removed and the cells have temporarily lost their identity. The partly reprogrammed cells were given time to grow under normal conditions, to observe whether their specific skin cell function returned. Genome analysis showed that cells had regained markers characteristic of skin cells (fibroblasts), and this was confirmed by observing collagen production in the reprogrammed cells.To show that the cells had been rejuvenated, the researchers looked for changes in the hallmarks of ageing. As explained by Dr Diljeet Gill, a postdoc in Wolf Reik's lab at the Institute who conducted the work as a PhD student: "Our understanding of ageing on a molecular level has progressed over the last decade, giving rise to techniques that allow researchers to measure age-related biological changes in human cells. We were able to apply this to our experiment to determine the extent of reprogramming our new method achieved."Researchers looked at multiple measures of cellular age. The first is the epigenetic clock, where chemical tags present throughout the genome indicate age. The second is the transcriptome, all the gene readouts produced by the cell. By these two measures, the reprogrammed cells matched the profile of cells that were 30 years younger compared to the reference data sets.The potential applications of this technique are dependent on the cells not only appearing younger but functioning like young cells too. Fibroblasts produce collagen, a molecule found in bones, skin tendons and ligaments, helping provide structure to tissues and heal wounds. The rejuvenated fibroblasts produced more collagen proteins compared to control cells that did not undergo the reprogramming process.Fibroblasts also move into areas that need repairing. Researchers tested the partially rejuvenated cells by creating an artificial cut in a layer of cells in a dish. They found that their treated fibroblasts moved into the gap faster than older cells. This is a promising sign that one day this research could eventually be used to create cells that are better at healing wounds.In the future, this research may also open up other therapeutic possibilities. The researchers observed that their method also had an effect on other genes linked to age-related diseases and symptoms. The APBA2 gene, associated with Alzheimer's disease, and the MAF gene with a role in the development of cataracts, both showed changes towards youthful levels of transcription.The mechanism behind the successful transient reprogramming is not yet fully understood and is the next piece of the puzzle to explore. The researchers speculate that key areas of the genome involved in shaping cell identity might escape the reprogramming process.Diljeet concluded, "Our results represent a big step forward in our understanding of cell reprogramming. We have proved that cells can be rejuvenated without losing their function and that rejuvenation looks to restore some function to old cells. The fact that we also saw a reverse of ageing indicators in genes associated with diseases is particularly promising for the future of this work."Professor Wolf Reik, a group leader in the Epigenetics research programme who has recently moved to lead the Altos Labs Cambridge Institute, said, "This work has very exciting implications. Eventually, we may be able to identify genes that rejuvenate without reprogramming, and specifically target those to reduce the effects of ageing. This approach holds promise for valuable discoveries that could open up an amazing therapeutic horizon."&nbsp;—ANI

Lucknow: A woman employee of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), living in the colony on campus in Lucknow's Jankipuram police station area, was found dead under mysterious circumstances.Her husband has gone missing and is being tracked by police.The deceased, identified as Varsha Singh, 28, was a technical officer in the neuro-science department of the institute and lived in a flat in the colony. Her husband Vishveshwar Singh is an agent in an insurance company.ACP, Aliganj, Syed Ali Abbas, said that as per Vishveshwar came out of their flat on Monday night, carrying Varsha in arms and screaming for help."Their neighbour, Akhilesh Kumar rushed to help, took out his car and drove the couple to the nearest private hospital where doctors asked them to take her to an advanced government hospital like KGMU for better treatment.""Vishveshwar asked Akhilesh to drive back home first as he had to collect some things and then take Varsha to the hospital," the ACP said.When Akhilesh drove back to the colony, Vishveshwar opened the door and fled.Akhilesh then informed police that rushed to the spot and found the woman lying dead in Akhilesh's car.Varsha Singh either committed suicide by hanging herself or was strangulated by her husband who fled after her death fearing police action, said the police official.The colony residents told the police that Varsha and Vishveshwar used to have frequent fights and that she may have hanged herself or was strangulated.Police officials have informed Varsha's family about her demise and have sent the body for post mortem."We are examining whether the injury on her neck was caused due to strangulation or by hanging," said ADCP, North Zone, Prachi Singh.Officials said the exact sequence of incidents would be known after Vishveshwar is arrested and interrogated.Varsha, who belongs to Mau district, was employed in the neuro-science department of the institute for the last three years.&nbsp;—IANS

On this occasion, the Extension Division of Forest Research Institute, Dehradun organized programme on Bird Watching and Botanization in the institute’s campus. The participants assembled in the Botanical Garden the institute and welcomed by Ms. Richa Misra, IFS, Head, Extension Division and her team. Thereafter, participants were divided into two groups respectively for Birds watching and Botanization. The Bird watching group was lead by Dr. Arun Pratap Singh, Scientist-F of Entomology Division and the Botanization group lead by Dr. Anup Chandra, Scientist-F of Forest Botany Division and both the groups proceeded for biodiversity watching inside the campus. Subsequently, both the groupsreassembled in the botanical garden where they were addressed by Dr. Renu Singh, IFS Director Forest Research Institute. She addressed the participants and spoke on the importance of the biodiversity and its conservation. She also stressed on the need of awareness for conservation of biodiversity. She stated that biodiversity conservation in intrinsicallyassociated with survival of mankind. It is also everybody’s moral duty to protect and conserve biodiversity. This has been proven to be true specially in COVID time. A competition quiz was also arranged for all participants where questions related to biodiversity were asked to the participants. All the participants participated very untheatrically in the quiz competition. The programme was concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Charan Singh, Scientist-F, Extension Division of the institute. Marking the second edition of Uttarakhand Police Hackathon, Devbhoomi Cyber Hackathon 2.0, Uttarakhand Police today conducted the launch of the website of the mega event Devbhoomi Cyber Hackathon at its headquarters in Dehradun.The website has been developed under the aegis of IIT Roorkee and Uttarakhand Police.&nbsp;Shri Ashok Kumar, Director General of Police, Uttarakhand inaugurated the website, during the event. The mega event was graced by the participation of State senior police officials, MHA officials, Prof. Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee and Mahindra team. New Delhi (The Hawk): As a part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, the Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah will inaugurate the National Tribal Research Institute on the 7th of June 2022 in New Delhi.The NTRI will be a premier national level institute and become the nerve-center of tribal concerns, issues and matters in academic, executive and legislative fields.&nbsp;It will collaborate and network with reputed research institutes, Universities, organizations as well as academic bodies and resource Centres.&nbsp;It wil Monitor projects of Tribal Research Institutes(TRIs), Centres of Excellence (CoEs), research scholars of NFS and set up norms for improvement in the quality of research and training. Its other activities would be to provide policy inputs to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs as well as State Welfare Departments, Design studies and programs that improve or support socio-economic aspects of tribal lifestyles, creating and maintenance of Database of PMAAGY, providing guidelines in Setting and running of Tribal Museums and Showcasing rich tribal cultural heritage of India under one umbrella.&nbsp;Minister of Tribal Affairs, Shri Arjun Munda, other cabinet and state Ministers including Minister of Law and Justice, Sh. Kiren Rijiju; MoS Tribal Affairs Smt Renuka Singh Saruta; MoS Tribal affairs Sh. Bishweswar Tudu; MoS Minority affairs Sh. John Barla and MoS Rural Development and Steel Sh. The collection is being introduced with an invitation in pink, as a call to prosperity post Covid, and the Fashion Show to be held on the 10th of June at 5:30 p.m.The show Shears &amp; Ruban 2022 will be graced by the presence of Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar and the Guest of Honour Ms. Shalini Kahlon, an Entrepreneur and Lifestyle Designer. The collection will be a splash of creativity, where one may witness a range of styles, borne out of different ideas.One of the student, Rajvinder’s collection is inspired by the Mystical sense of awe, fascination and mystery. Manifested through the use of bead, sequin, colours, layers of organza she captures the shapes of the butterfly, sand balls, ripples and waves. Aditi's collection has experimented on the blissful transformations of colours that take place in nature, and so does her garments transform from one design to another in an aesthetic appeal. Bhupinder’s collection is inspired by the movement of water trickling down giving shape and dimension to his garments. Jasmeet has added a different dimension to kid's wear with a pomp of bright colour dyed in large silhouette of flowers. New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the Narendra Modi government has brought the number of districts affected by Left-wing extremism in the country down by 70 per cent. The government has also lifted the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from more than 66 per cent area in the northeast and brought peace in the region, Shah said after inaugurating the National Tribal Research Institute in New Delhi. The home minister said the northeast and the Left-wing extremism-affected areas in the country are tribal-dominated regions and security is a precursor to development there."A secured northeast and a secured central India will pave the way for the development of tribals," he said.Shah said 8,700 untoward incidents took place in the northeast between 2006 and 2014, when the Congress was in power. This number has reduced to 1,700 under the Modi government, he said, comparing eight years of both the dispensations. Only 87 security personnel have lost their lives in the northeast under the Modi government as against 304 during the Congress rule. The number of civilian deaths has come down from 1,990 to 217, the home minister said.He said Prime Minister Modi has accorded top priority to research and education since he came to power."Under the Congress government, in 2014, an amount of Rs 7 crore was set aside for this purpose. In 2022, we have kept Rs 150 crore for it," Shah said.He added that the Modi government has increased the budget for Eklavya residential schools from Rs 278 crore to Rs 1,418 crore in the current financial year.Shah said tribal children can even bring Olympic medals as sports is a part of their traditions."They are natural sportspersons and only need guidance, coaching, practice and a platform to showcase their talent," he said.The Centre spends Rs 1.09 lakh on each tribal student studying in the Eklavya schools as against Rs 42,000 earlier, he added.Shah highlighted that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has the highest number of tribal MPs and ministers."The previous governments would talk about tribal development, but did they provide clean drinking water to tribals or build toilets in their houses? Did they give health cards to the Scheduled Tribe communities?" he asked.The Modi government provided clean drinking water to 1.28 crore tribal houses under the Jal Jeevan Mission and built toilets in 1.45 crore households, Shah said."We have given Ayushman cards to 82 lakh Scheduled Tribe families and built over 40 lakh houses for tribals under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana," he added.The Modi government has increased the scholarship amount significantly -- from Rs 978 crore in 2014 to Rs 2,546 crore at present. The budgetary allocation for tribal welfare schemes has been increased from Rs 21,000 crore in 2014 to Rs 86,000 crore in 2021-22, the home minister said.Shah said the government has recognised the sacrifices and valour of tribal freedom fighters and 10 museums are being built across the country in their honour at a cost of around Rs 200 crore.He said there are many institutions in India such as the Planning Commission (now Niti Aayog), Life Insurance Corporation of India and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited that have contributed immensely to the country's progress.Similarly, the NTRI will play a pivotal role in the development of tribals in the country, he said, adding that this is a milestone.The institute will become the backbone of tribal development in the run-up to 100 years of the country's Independence, Shah said.The home minister said there are many traditional tribal laws in the country related to water, forests, land, education, health, art, culture, language and tradition, which need research."Any tribal welfare law cannot be implemented without harmonising these laws with the current laws. Research on all these subjects can only be done at the national level," he said.Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said indigenous tribes are spread across the country but earlier, people would not consider them a part of the mainstream. Alleging that the previous governments completely disregarded the concerns of the tribals, he said the Modi government believes that the country will not progress till the Scheduled Tribes move forward.Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda said the policies and programmes to uplift the tribal people became stronger and transparent during Modi's tenure as prime minister.—PTI
