Roorkee (The Hawk): National Service Scheme Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (NSS IITRoorkee) today organized and hosted Sustainability Conclave 2022, under the theme"Yearning For Viability", to model and address the rising issues including climate change, environmental degradation, energy crisis, and water shortage. The Conclave aims to empower young innovative minds with the expertise and proficiency of leaders and researchers by bringing them on a common platform. The Conclave is committed to fostering a space for driving collective action for advancing equity and opportunities for all humankind, thereby aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of a better and more sustainable future for all.The event was graced by the presence of Hon'ble Chief Minister, Uttarakhand, Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami who was the Chief Guest, along with Shri Pradeep Batra, MLA, Roorkee, Guest of Honour. Furthermore, the event witnessed the presence of Swami YatindranandGiri, Mahamandaleshwar of Juna Akhaada.The Conclave was divided into conferences for sustainable development, followed by a series of innovative exchange of strategies to help achieve long-term sustainability, workshops, hackathons, ideathon, case study and policy case competitions, among others.Team NSS IIT Roorkee has worked tirelessly for the Sustainability Conclave. They were guided by the Dean of Students Welfare IIT Roorkee, Prof. Mukesh Kumar Barua, Associate Dean of Students Welfare, Prof. Anil Kumar Gaurishetty and their faculty advisor, Prof. Premlata Jena. The conclave was led by the General Secretary, Ujjval Kumar, with his core team, some of whom are Anuraj Saxena, VedantMeshram and Raman Yadav. The students worked hard enough to conduct the successful conclave. For the Blood Donation Campaign, VanshRuhela and Kritin Agarwal were responsible for overall coordination and completed it successfully. Sahil, Baljeet and Prateek were responsible for leading the “Run for Sustainability”, an event focusing on spreading the message of sustainability in the campus.Furthermore, marking its 175th year of establishment, the institute also showcased,TechSarthi, an IIT Roorkee’s endeavor for supporting industrial units in and around Roorkee. The TechSarthi scheme was officially launched by Hon'ble Chief Minister, Uttarakhand, Shri Pushkar Singh Dhamiwhich will focus on industries to help adopt technically sound solutions, gear up their growth, and realize the objective of “Local to Global”.This initiative aims to audit industrial units to evaluate the current state of technology, propose practical solutions to their problems, and suggest improvements to boost overall efficiency. Accordingly, the industries can adopt the latest technology or sustainably improvise the existing ones. Roorkee (The Hawk): Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITRoorkee) is launching a project for development of Advanced Packaging Research Laboratory and skill development program at Department of Paper Technology, Saharanpur Campus under the aegis of Satia Industries Limited.
Satia Industries Limited (SIL) is one of the biggest woods and agro-based paper plant industry with manufacturing facility located in district Shri Muktsar Sahib Punjab. SIL is listed in BSE and NSE and in-line with Government initiative to reduce dependency on import of papers and eliminate single use plastic from Indian market.
This is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Satia Industries Limited as delineated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). MoU signing event held on 17thAugust 2022 at IIT Roorkee was graced by the presence of Mr. Chirag Satia, Executive Director of Satia Industries Limited, Board of Directors IITRDF - Prof. Ajit Chaturvedi, Prof. Manoranjan Parida, Prof. Partha Roy and Prof. Akshay Dvivedi, Santosh Kumar (Chief Executive Officer IITRDF), Prof.Sujay Chattopadhyay (Dean Saharanpur campus), Prof. DharmDutt(Head Paper Technology) and Finance Officer (IIT Roorkee). IIT Roorkee Development Foundationis a Section-8 Company (not-for-profit) of IIT Roorkee established on 12th May 2021.
Thisprogram will help science graduates coming from rural and remote areas in the vicinity of industries. Students will be prepared as testers in paper effluent testing. This skill development training will help students get absorbed in paper and pulp industries. Food loss and waste prevention strategies is among the sustainable development goals to effectively prevent and or reduce wastage. This program will encourage and train the students to integrate knowledge with awareness and pinpoint where along the food chain, for which foods and in which areas the greatest losses are produced and how to target efforts in the most effective way for waste prevention.
Prof. Ajit K Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee, said, ‘’IITRDF will enable the Institute’s pursuit of excellence by serving as a liaison between the Institute and donors. Roorkee (The Hawk): Prof. O. P. Malik was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award 2021 in the category Research Excellence. The award ceremony was held on 11 November at Bose Auditorium, Dept. of Physics, IIT Roorkee. Prof. Malik has done pioneering work in the development of controllers for application in electric power systems and wind power generation over the past 50 years. The adaptive controllers developed by his group are now employed on large generating units. His other interests include digital protection, control of renewable power generation and micro-grids, and AI applications in power system control.
The Distinguished Alumnus Awards (DAA) are given to alumni of University of Roorkee (UOR) or IIT Roorkee (IITR) to recognize their outstanding contributions in any of the following six categories - Academic or Research Excellence, Excellence in Engineering or Technology Innovation, Excellence in Leadership in the Government or Public Sector, Excellence in Leadership in the Private Sector, Entrepreneurial Excellence, Excellence in Service to the Society. Maximum two awards from each category are bestowed each year.

The Institute will experience a massive gathering of Students, Alumni, Faculty, and Staff members on this grand occasion. The event will be graced by the presence of Shri Om Birla, Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, as the Chief Guest, and Shri Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Vice-Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, as the Guest of Honor. Other eminent personality to attend the event includes Shri Vineet Pandey, Secretary (Post).
Shri Om Birla is the 17th and current Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He serves as a Member of Parliament for the Kota-Bundi constituency in Rajasthan. Prior to parliament, he was elected thrice to the assembly of Rajasthan. Shri Vineet Pandey is the current Secretary (Posts) and Chairman of, the Postal Services Board. He is an Officer of the 1986 batch of the Indian Postal Service and shall declare the Commemorative Stamp brought by the Deptt post for 175 years of IITR establishment released. IIT Roorkee is fostering collaboration with Paper Industries from India with focus providing cutting edge innovation research and skill development to have impact on communities at large. IIT Roorkee Development Foundation (IITRDF) is bridging the gap between industry and academia to promote R&amp;D on specific requirements of industries with the help of globally renowned faculties of IIT Roorkee. In this direction, Shah Paper Mills Limited is a leading paper Manufacturer based in Wapi, Gujarat. It has production of two standalone units with state-of-the-art manufacturing machinery with an integrated pulping and drinking facility. Shah Paper mill manufactures the paper by recycling the waste paper using the latest two-stage deinking process hence contributing a lot towards environment preservation. Shah Paper Mills has a production capacity of 500 MT per day, wherein it recycles about 550 MT of waste paper per day.&nbsp;

IITRDF & Shah Paper Mills Limited Signed An MoU For Establishing Research Laboratory And Skill Development Training Program

Roorkee (The Hawk): A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between Central Water Commission and Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) for establishing the International Centre of Excellence for Dams (ICED) at IIT Roorkee on February 14, 2023, in Shram Shakti Bhawan, Ministry of Jal Shakti, New Delhi. This MoA signing event was chaired by Shri Pankaj Kumar, Secretary, Department of Water Resources, RD&amp;GR(DoWR,RD&amp;GR) Ministry of Jal Shakti in the gracious presence of Prof U P Singh, Deputy Director, IIT Roorkee, Mrs Debashri Mukherjee, Special Secretary,DoWR,RD&amp;GR, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Shri Anand Mohan, Joint Secretary, DoWR, RD&amp;GR,Ministry of Jal Shakti, Sh Kushvinder Vohra, Chairman Central Water Commission, Sh Sanjay Kumar Sibal, Member D&amp;R.
The MoA was signed by Shri Vijay Saran, Chief Engineer, DSO and Project Director, DRIP Phase II and III and Prof Akshay Dvivedi, Dean of Sponsored Research &amp; Industrial Consultancy on behalf of CWC and IIT Roorkee, respectively.
This International Center of Excellence for Dams will be focusing on different safety and rehabilitation aspects of Dams, like Hydrological, Hydraulic, Structural, Geotechnical, seismic safety evaluation, and reservoir sedimentation &amp; silt control, etc. This Center is being developed to create manpower having sufficient background and expertise in the area of Dam Safety. This Center will be developed to deal with the complete life cycle of the dam in the longer run. Under this MoA, the Ministry of Jal Shakti under DRIP Phase II and III has provided a Grant of Rs 108.99 crores to IIT Roorkee for establishing this Center of Excellence for dams.
During this MoA signing event, Prof N K Goel, Coordinator of, Dam safety and rehabilitation program at IIT Roorkee, Prof. M L Sharma, Theme coordinator, Prof. Z. Ahmad, Theme Coordinator, and Prof. Brijesh Yadav, Head of the Department of Hydrology were also present. Prof. K. K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee joined the event online.&nbsp;
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has been deeply associated with dams and other water projects of the country since its inception 175 years ago in 1847. The footprints of IIT Roorkee can be seen at the major dam projects of the country and many other dams across the world. Several Departments of IIT Roorkee namely Departments of Hydrology, Civil Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Architecture and Planning, Earth Sciences, Water Resources Development and Management, Hydro, and Renewable Energy, and Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, etc. are focusing on various design aspects of the dams. These Departments are coming up with innovative methods that are proving to be successful in the safe and economic design and operation of the dams. The ability of IIT Roorkee to carry out various disciplines of Hydrology, Water Resources, Hydraulics, Structures, Geotechnical, Seismology, Geology, hydro-mechanical and A&amp;P under one roof enables the institute to establish the International Centre for Dams and develop it as one of the most advanced centres in the world.
The International Centre for Dams shall initially focus on the reservoir sedimentation and silt control, and seismic hazard analysis and mapping in the initial 2 to 3 years. In the coming years, the centre will be developed to deal with the complete cycle of dam safety starting from planning of a dam, design, construction, operation, and maintenance including policy and financing. Conforming to the DRIP’s objectives, the center will be aimed at promoting new technologies and improving Institutional capacities for dam safety evaluation and implementation in India as well as in other countries for the existing dams to start with. Subsequently, the center will also take up the tasks of the complete design of new dams in India as well as abroad.
India has 5334 large dams in operation and about 411 large dams are under construction. The safety of these dams is of utmost importance. Many of the existing dams are very old and need rehabilitation. Keeping these concerns in view, IIT Roorkee has taken the lead to establish a new M Tech. Programme on Dam Safety and Rehabilitation for the in service engineers in close collaboration with Central Water Commission, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Bank with effect from August 2021.
Prof. K. K. Pant reaffirmed the commitment of IIT Roorkee toward water security and safety of dams. Prof. U. P. Singh, Deputy Director assured the best efforts of IIT Roorkee to develop the International Centre of Excellence for dams to meet the expectations of the country and the International community.
Prof. N. K. Goel, Coordinator of the Dam safety and rehabilitation program at IIT Roorkee thanked the MoJS for entrusting the responsibility of establishing ICED at IIT Roorkee and assured the commitment of the faculty colleagues and students at IIT Roorkee towards the dam safety and rehabilitation. He thanked Mrs Debashree Mukherjee for giving continuous guidance to IIT Roorkee for this program.
Shri Pankaj Kumar, Secretary, DoWR, RD &amp; GR, Ministry of Jal Shakti said that ‘’Government of India has taken a number of policy initiatives for improving the ecosystem for dam safety management in the country. Establishment of International Centre of Excellence for Dams at IIT Roorkee is one such important initiative in this direction. He further stated that in the long run, with the active involvement of the academic and central institutions, domain expertise in dam safety management will be available within the country, which will give right impetus to the Government of India Mission “Atmannirbhar Bharat” and will also provide a window of opportunity for disseminating knowledge and expertise in this area to many underdeveloped and developing nations in future.’’
Mrs Debashree Mukherjee, Special Secretary, DoWR,RD&amp;GR said that ‘’ICED at IIT Roorkee will provide state of the art technical knowhow that is at par with the international practices and standards in the field of dam management and safety to address the issues encountered by the dam owners. She further observed that ICED will provide robust solutions for dam safety challenges through research and development, sponsored consultancy services, having need-based collaborations with leading global institutions and experts.’’
Shri Anand Mohan, Joint Secretary (RD&amp;PP) on the said occasion expressed ‘’that Government of India apart from establishing the two Centers of Excellence for dam safety, also developing the institutional capacity building of various central agencies and other premier academic institutions in the dam safety areas and the country in the coming years will become self-reliant in addressing the complex dam safety issues and challenges.’’
Shri Kushvinder Vohra, Chairman CWC said that ‘IIT Roorkee, through this Centre, shall also endeavor to embrace new technological advancement in other dam safety areas and help provide cutting edge solutions to challenging problems faced by dam owners’.

One of the most important initiatives is the capacity building of our academic institutions to widen the horizon of dam safety knowledge in the country to provide technical support to our dam owners and the establishment of Centre of Excellence is one of the activities under these endeavors . He also stressed that this Centre would endeavor to promote good blend of academic as well as industry knowledge, through involvement of officials from CWC/dam owning agencies in the various activities of the Centre, from time to time. This MoU aims to develop scientific and academic cooperation and scientific research to promote relations and mutual understanding between NCDR and the Centre of Excellence in Disaster Mitigation and Management (CoEDMM) of IIT Roorkee. The key objective of the MoU is mutually developing technology solutions to natural hazards, including earthquakes, landslides, floods, debris flow, and compound disasters. The researchers from IIT Roorkee and NCDR aim to co-establish an early warning sensor network equipped with P-Alert sensors at selected locations in Uttarakhand. The meeting was attended by Prof. M. At present, the alert system is active only within Uttarakhand, India. The EEWS should be extended to other regions within and outside India. This being the motivation of SAADRI and CoEDMM IIT Roorkee, Prof. K. K. IITR Signs An MoU With NCDR, Taiwan For Mutually Developing Technology Solutions To Natural Hazards

Roorkee (The Hawk): IIT Roorkee has identified drinking water and sanitation as a major water sector challenge facing most Afro-Asian countries, including India. Drinking water and quality lab require testing wastewater, freshwater, soil and waste samples. Due to surface water pollution and overexploitation of groundwater resources, the need for effective water analysis and monitoring has been pressing the need to set up a drinking water quality laboratory at IIT Roorkee. PTC India Financial Services Ltd (PFS) supported this project to develop a Drinking Water Quality Lab at the Department of Water Resources Development and Management (DWRDM) at IIT Roorkee. The contribution comes under PFS's CSR policy, and the funds will be used to procure an instrument named "Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT)" for the lab. The IITRDF and PFS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the agreement. The signing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Shri Sitesh Kumar Sinha (Executive Vice President), Shri Vinod Pande (Advisor CSR, PTC India Financial Services Ltd), and the Board of Directors of IITRDF - Prof. K.K. Dr. (Ms.) Parvinder Maini,Scientific Secretary to Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India, visited Panjab University for setting up S&amp;T Cluster in Northern Region of India comprising states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and J&amp;K and Union Territoryof Chandigarh.
In the Curtain Raiser event organised for setting of S&amp;T Cluster,Dr. (Mrs) Parvinder Maini, gave the introductory remarks and underlined the need for S&amp;T Cluster. She Said, “The Chief Operating Officers (or their equivalents) are uniquely positioned in the already established six clusters in various cities of India. For the proposed cluster in Panjab University, she was elated to see the support from various stakeholders that has capacity for enabling India to become a technology reliant country. Dr. Maini discussed with the stakeholders, principles of this flagship program at regional and global level. She further added that the seed grant will be provided by the Office of PSA for setting up the cluster. Dr. Maini emphasised on the fact that the main mandate of the cluster should be to innovate on pain-points of the end users. She urged that the industries should be involved in the project at the very starting stage of the project.
The event was presided by Professor Renu Vig, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh. who is also Chair of the Proposed S&amp;T Cluster (Nr). In her address, she accentuated on the research facilities already available at Panjab University i.e CRICK, DIC, SAIF, TEC, BioNEST, etc., which would support the proposed S&amp;T Cluster.
Dr. Rupinder Tiwari, Mentor, Technology Enabling Centre at Panjab University, shared the genesis of S&amp;T Cluster, and modalities to be worked upon for S&amp;T Ecosystem of northern region of India. He briefed about the MoU (between PU &amp; IIT-Ropar) and Goals of S&amp;T Cluster (NR).
Prof Rajeev Ahuja, Director, IIT Ropar and Joint-Chair [Proposed S&amp;T Cluster (North)] in his address emphatically remarked, that how both IIT Ropar and PU can work together to bring technological solutions of the problems of the industry. He assured to help in setting up of a robust and vibrant Innovation-driven Technology Development Ecosystem.
Further Dr Pushpendra P Singh from IIT-Ropar gave detailed insights into the implementation of the ‘Proposal on S&amp;T Cluster (NR)’. He discussed the framework of the cluster which was categorized into 5 different segments i.e Pharma/healthcare, Agriculture, Sustainable Mobility,Green Energy, Waste management. He beautifully articulated a potential revenue model and the plan of implementation.
Very enthralling Interactive session was conducted by Professor Manu Sharma, Honorary Director CIIPP &amp;TEC,with various industrial delegates, and academic stakeholders. They discussed the wide-ranging engagements, including the National Missions on One Health, Quantum Technologies, Livelihood, Green Hydrogen, One Nation One Subscription, etc. The discussion focused majorly on having solutions to the industrial problems. The event was attended by about 20 people from the Industry and 20 people from different CRIKC Institutes. Professor Arvind, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr Sanjeev Khosla, Director of IMTech and Professor Rudrapratap, Vice-Chancellor of Plaksha University graced the event with their presence. Lucknow: The CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) is working on a hi-tech device to help reduce the concentration of ambient air pollution, more effectively than anti-smog guns and smog towers that are currently used. What makes the device unique is that it will not only clean air by reducing PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations but will also reduce gaseous pollutants from the air, a feature that is unavailable in the present ambient air pollution reduction devices. The institute has already made the design and technology of the device with the help of a grant of Rs 34.79 lakh given by the DST-Science and Research Engineering Board (SERB) for the project. The technology has now been given to an external agency to fabricate the device. Dr B. Sreekanth, the brain behind the design and development of this device, scientist and assistant professor of environmental monitoring division, CSIR-IITR, who is the project investigator, said, "A few recent ambient air purification devices like WAYU of CSIR-NEERI and Smog-Tower of IIT Bombay are facing challenges at the field evaluation stage due to their huge size, power requirements and maintenance. However, there is a demand for competent and upgraded device-technology solutions for improved air quality. Hence CSIR-IITR is making a new one." He said the institute has been conducting air pollution monitoring at nine locations in Lucknow since 1997 and has also been involved in various national policies and standardisations for air pollution management. He said, "The proposed device technology is designed for 1,000 cubic metre per hour (m3/hr) intake of ambient airflow and computational simulations found that the design of the device reduced concentration of fine particulate matters (like PM10 and PM2.5) up to 80 per cent and gaseous pollutants (like SO2 and NO2) up to 60 per cent." He said the device technology also oxidises the concentration of other critical pollutants in the breathing air like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and volatile organic compounds. Fabrication of the device is in progress through an external mechanical agency under a turnkey basis based on CSIR-IITR-developed design and geometry. —IANS

New Delhi (The Hawk): DSIR-CRTDH-IITR, Lucknow organised a day long second "Chintan Shivir on CRTDHs Empowering MSMEs" under Common Research and Technology Development Hub (CRTDH) programme of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology. The goal of this Chintan Shivir was to fortify relationships between academics and industry by stressing that this cooperation plays an important in promoting industrial R&amp;D and fostering a culture that strengthens information sharing, collaborative research, and technical innovation. The CRTDH promotes R&amp;D operations in the nation and offers extensive support and guidance and hence plays a crucial role in bolstering the MSME sector, encouraging a growth-friendly climate, and advancing technological breakthroughs to achieve long cherished goal of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. Dr. N. The workshop featured an extensive program, including plenary talks, keynote addresses, and a multitude of oral and poster presentations, providing a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in the field.   The inaugural day commenced with a grand inaugural program at the MAC Auditorium, IIT Roorkee, featuring dignitaries, esteemed guests, and prominent figures in the Earth Sciences community. In the inaugural program, the program was presided over by Prof. K K Pant, Director IIT Roorkee, but due to a last-minute engagement, Prof Anand Joshi read his address.
