States of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Nagaland will participate in the meeting. In order to ensure optimum impact of recently launched 3 Missions- POSHAN 2.0, Vatsalya and Shakti, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has initiated a series of Zonal Consultations with State Govts and Stakeholders in each region of the country. Zonal meeting in Guwahati is the third in the series. First such meeting was held in Chandigarh on 2nd April and second in Bengaluru on 4th April, 2022.Empowerment and protection of women and children who constitute 67.7% of India’s population and ensuring their wholesome development in a safe and secure environment is crucial for sustainable and equitable development of the country and for achieving transformational economic and social changes. To achieve this objective, Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has recently approved 3 important Umbrella Schemes of the Ministry to be implemented in mission mode, viz., Mission Poshan 2.0, Mission Shakti and Mission Vatsalya. These 3 Missions will be implemented during the 15th Finance Commission period,2021-22 to 2025-26. The Schemes under the Umbrella Missions are Centrally Sponsored Schemes which are implemented by the State Governments/UT Administrations on cost-sharing basis as per cost sharing norms. Scheme Guidelines are being shared with the States/UTs.The prime objective of the Ministry of Women and Child Development is to address the gaps in State action for women and children and to promote inter-ministerial and inter-sectoral convergence to create gender equitable and child centred legislation, policies and programmes and to provide women and children with an environment which is accessible, affordable, reliable and free from all forms of discrimination and violence. In this direction, the objectives under the schemes of the Ministry are sought to be achieved with the support of State Governments and UT Administrations which are responsible for the administration of the schemes on the ground.The objective of the Zonal Conferences is to sensitise State Governments on the 3 Umbrella Missions of the Ministry to facilitate proper implementation of the Schemes over the next 5 years in the true spirit of co-operative federalism to ensure that the transformational social change envisaged under the Missions is accomplished for the benefit of women and children of the country.Mission POSHAN 2.0 is an Integrated Nutrition Support Programme. It seeks to address the challenges of malnutrition in children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers through a strategic shift in nutrition content and delivery and by creation of a convergent eco-system to develop and promote practices that nurture health, wellness and immunity. Poshan 2.0 will seek to optimize the quality and delivery of food under the Supplementary Nutrition Program. Poshan 2.0 will bring 3 important programmes/schemes under its ambit, viz., Anganwadi Services, Scheme for Adolescent Girls and Poshan Abhiyan.Mission Shakti envisages a unified citizen-centric lifecycle support for women through integrated care, safety, protection, rehabilitation and empowerment to unshackle women as they progress through various stages of their life. Mission Shakti has two sub-schemes ‘Sambal’ and ‘Samarthya’. While the “Sambal” sub-scheme is for safety and security of women, the “Samarthya” sub-scheme is for empowerment of women.The objective of Mission Vatsalya is to secure a healthy and happy childhood for every child in the country; foster a sensitive, supportive and synchronized ecosystem for development of children; assist States/UTs in delivering the mandate of the Juvenile Justice Act 2015; achieve the SDG goals. Components under Mission Vatsalya will include statutory bodies; service delivery structures; institutional care/services; non-institutional community-based care; emergency outreach services; training and capacity building.

Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has partnered with NTPC to design and develop a highly energy-efficient plant for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture from power plants.The indegenouIIT Guwahati, NTPC Develop Energy Efficient Tech For CO2 Captures technology works on flue gas using a newly activated amine solvent (IITGS).It consumes up to 11 per cent less energy compared to commercial activated MDEA (Monoethanolamine) solvent and up to 31 per cent less energy compared to benchmark MEA (Monoethanolamine) solvent."The increase in anthropogenic CO2 emissions is one of the reasons attributed to global warming," said Prof. Bishnupada Mandal, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati."Extensive research efforts are being made by the scientific community to overcome this global challenge that includes modifications to existing technologies through efficiency improvement for CO2 capture," he added.The technology also has the potential to save a lot of foreign exchange for the nation.The outcomes of this project will benefit oil, natural gas, biogas industries, and petroleum refineries.The MEA and other proprietary solvent-based technologies are available for CO2 capture in the chemical industry.It is utilised in coal and gas-fired power plants mainly to produce food-grade CO2 in small quantities (compared to CO2 capture in power plants).However, the process is energy-intensive, if adopted for large-scale CO2 capture in power plants.The new technology by IIT Guwahati is an energy-efficient amine-based process for CO2 capture from flue gas.The teams at IIT Guwahati and NTPC are in the process of patenting the technology.The next phase of the study will involve the testing of pilot-pant using industrial flue gas. —IANS

New Delhi: After an Ola customer claimed on social media that a fault in the company's electric two-wheeler led to his son's accident, the ride-hailing major said on Friday that its investigation showed the rider was overspeeding.Balwant Singh from Guwahati had tweeted on April 15 that his son had met with an accident "due to fault in regenerative breaking where on a speed breaker instead of slowing, the scooter accelerated, sending so much torque that he had an accident".The tweet thread went viral on social media.Ola said it did a thorough investigation of the accident and the "data clearly shows that the rider was overspeeding throughout the night and that he braked in panic, thereby losing control of the vehicle. There was nothing wrong with the vehicle".The accident happened on March 26 when Singh's son was driving an Ola S1 Pro."The scooter went airborne before crashing and skidding. My son was hospitalised on March 26 and had a fracture in left hand and 16 stitches in right hand due to fault in Ola S1 Pro," tweeted Singh.Ola said that the scooter's speed on the night of the accident was between 95 kmph and 115 kmph.At the time of the accident, three brakes were applied together - front, rear and regenerative - bringing the speed from 80 kmph to 0 kmph in 3 seconds."Road safety is of paramount importance to us. We strongly recommend everyone to ride responsibly, adhere to speed limits and ensure your're wearing a helmet," Ola said.

Guwahati: The ruling BJP-led alliance on Sunday secured a clean sweep by winning 58 seats in the 60-seat Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) opened its account in the civic body.According to the results announced by the Assam State Election Commission, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 52 wards including the three which were earlier elected unopposed by the saffron party candidates while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured six wards out of seven wards it contested.In a significant development in the civic polls, the AAP and the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP), a local party, secured one seat each.AAP candidate Masuma Begum won ward number 42, while AJP nominee Hukum Chand Ali secured victory in ward number one, defeating the BJP and AGP candidates, respectively.The main opposition Congress, which fielded candidates in 54 wards, this time, could not open its account in the GMC elections, which were held after a gap of nine years.The Congress' ally CPI-M, which contested in four wards, also failed to win any ward. In all, 197 candidates had contested the elections in 57 wards.The GMC election was last held in 2013, when Congress won the prestigious civic body but due to internal wranglings several elected councillors in 2014 and 2015 had shifted to BJP facilitating the saffron party to form the municipal board.Besides the ruling BJP and the main opposition Congress, the AAP had fielded 38 candidates.After its win in the recent Punjab Assembly elections, and buoyed by its first taste of success in two municipal wards in Lakhimpur and Tinsukia districts in last month's civic polls, the AAP is seeking to expand its base in Assam and in the northeastern region.Around 52.80 per cent of the 7,96,829 voters exercised their franchise in the GMC polls on Friday.Electronic Voting Machines were used in the politically important elections.Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P. With the launch of the Look East Policy (LEP), the security-centric approach towards neighbours in the east gave way to a prioritising of economic issues for benefiting from the common potential for economic growth across the region. In 2014, the LEP was upgraded to the Act East Policy (AEP) which brought about a paradigm shift and marked a significant change in the potential role of the North-East region.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The President said that he was happy to attend the&nbsp;valedictory function of North East Festival which is organized as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. We do so in order to learn more about their vision and be inspired from their struggles to build a better tomorrow.&nbsp;&nbsp;The President said that when our nation won Independence, the North-Eastern region was vastly different from what it is today.&nbsp;Initially, this region had suffered hugely because of Partition of India, as it found itself suddenly cut off from major centres of communications, education and trade and commerce such as Dhaka and Kolkata. The only corridor connecting the North-East and the rest of the country was a narrow strip of land in the north of West Bengal, making it challenging to support developmental initiatives in the region. Yet, we have diligently worked to overcome the challenges of geography. During the last 75 years, the North-East has made significant progress on a variety of parameters.&nbsp;The President stated that the North-Eastern region has immense inherent strengths. What it offers in terms of tourism, horticulture, handloom and sports is often unique. He said that efforts are needed now to place the North-Eastern states on par with the industrially advanced states so that more jobs are created here. Recognising this need, the Government is working with the states to improve their Ease of Doing Business parameters and to facilitate the flow of private investments into the North-East.&nbsp;Pointing to the emergence of climate change as the greatest challenge before humankind, the President said that careful planning and efforts will be needed in the years to come to preserve the rich ecological heritage of the North-East. He said that this region is part of the Himalaya and Indo-Burma bio-diversity hotspots – the two of 25 such hotspots in the world. Development choices for the region must, therefore, integrate relevant strategies for natural resource management, green industrial and infrastructure development as well as sustainable consumption patterns.

Guwahati: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati have developed a bio-electrochemical device called Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) which can generate green energy by treating waste water.According to officials, the use of organic material such as waste water in MFC makes it an eco-friendly device that offers a dual benefit of bioelectricity generation and waste management.“Rapid population growth has led to rising energy demands and environmental concerns, necessitating the development of renewable and sustainable energy production techniques. Along with several renewable energy sources (solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, and geothermal energy, among others), the sustainable energy sources also include the ‘Blue Energy’ sources of energy harvesting,” said T G Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati.“These are those sources of energy generation that have no negative impact on the environment, and energy is generated from various wastes, such as sewage waste and food industries wastes. This development by IIT team has provided an excellent sustainable energy source along with treating several waste waters. After scaling the process, it can be used as a source of clean energy using municipal waste water and other such areas economically,” he added.Explaining the long-term impact of the research, Mihir Kumar Purkait, Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, said further implementation of this process may provide an excellent alternative to several costlier renewable energy extraction processes.“This study reveals that the prepared Cation Exchange Membranes (CEMs) are cheaper and perform better as compared to the several reported membranes, assisting in the separation of charges and potential development,” he said.‘MFC’ is a bio-electrochemical reactor system that utilizes electrons liberated in the biochemical oxidation of organic substrates catalysed by anaerobic microbes. A conventional MFC reactor comprises an anaerobic biotic anode chamber, an aerobic biotic or abiotic cathode chamber, and a separator such as a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM).The active biocatalyst in the anodic chamber anaerobically oxidizes organic matter present in waste water to produce electrons and protons. Protons are transported to the cathodic chamber through the PEM. The external circuit conducts the electrons to the cathode, completing the electrical circuit. At the cathode, electrons and protons react in the presence of oxygen (or another electron acceptor), which gets reduced to water.“The present research focuses on the development of cost-effective and high-performance CEMs for application in MFCs. CEMs being the heart of the energy extraction process using MFCs need to be highly cost-effective along with being able to perform magnificently in order to make the process feasible and scalable.“The waste sugarcane bagasse has also been used in the study to improve the membrane performance, thereby preparing a valuable product from the agricultural waste. The investigation approves the applicability of prepared CEMs as a suitable PEM for application in MFC,” said Purkait.—PTI

New Delhi: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) would destroy around 42,000 kilogram narcotics at 14 locations, including Guwahati, Mumbai and Siliguri, as part of 'Drug Destruction Day' to be observed on Wednesday, the finance ministry said.The Drug Destruction Day would be observed as a part of an iconic week of 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' celebrations of the ministry to mark the 75th year of India's independence.A total of around 42,000 kg narcotics would be destroyed at 14 locations across the country, the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman would be virtually witnessing the destruction process to be held at Guwahati, Lucknow, Mumbai, Mundra/Kandla, Patna and Siliguri and address the officers.—PTI

Guwahati: A day after a major reshuffle in the Assam Cabinet, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) on Friday said that Guwahati Development Department (GDD) is vested on minister Ashok Singhal.The GDD is a part of Housing and Urban Affairs department, which continues to be with Singhal, the CMO said in a statement.The Urban Development Department and the GDD are currently placed together under the Housing and Urban Affairs Department, it added.Previously, the GDD was a separate department under the state government. Besides the Housing and Urban Affairs department, Singhal also holds the Irrigation department, with no change in his portfolios following Thursday's reshuffle.A month after completion of one year in office, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had carried out expansion and reshuffle of his Cabinet on Thursday.The new entrants, BJP MLAs Nandita Garlosa and Jayanta Malla Baruah, were assigned cabinet portfolios by re-calibrating the portfolio allotments among the existing ministers.With the two new inductees, the BJP-led Assam government at present has 16 cabinet ministers and there is no one as minister of state.As per the 91st amendment of the Constitution in 2003, the total number of ministers, including the chief minister, in a state should not exceed 15 per cent of the total number of members of the Legislative Assembly.As the Assam Assembly has a strength of 126 MLAs, a maximum of 19 ministers can function at a time.—PTI

Guwahati:&nbsp;Tahang Gao -- the cousin brother of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Arunachal Pradesh Tapir Gao, who went missing on Friday has been rescued from a hotel here on Saturday, officials said.He was later taken to Dispur police station here for questioning.Tahang Gao came to Guwahati two days ago for some personal work. He went to the Ganeshguri area of the city to meet a friend on Friday afternoon. Later, his mobile phone got switched off.The family was worried as they fail to contact Tahang and one of his relatives lodged a police complaint in the city's Dispur police station.According to reports, some miscreants looted around Rs 5 lakh from Tahang Gao. Police have arrested one person and detained a cab driver in connection to this incident.The officer-in-charge of the Dispur police station said that they had received a complaint from Gao's family about his disappearance and accordingly, the police conducted a search operation and Gao was rescued from a hotel."We are also trying to recover the lost money," he added.However, police have not divulged the details about Gao's disappearance.—IANS

The multidisciplinary initiative, in line with the Centre's National Education Policy, 2020 is a single umbrella where professors, researchers, entrepreneurs, doctors, and students from multiple departments will work together for research and innovation in the domain of healthcare innovation, an official release issued by the institute said on Monday. The centre is situated at the Centre of Nanotechnology and Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology of IIT, Guwahati. The initiative has been led by the Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biosciences and Bioengineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, and Design and Mathematics, among others. Elaborating on the Indian Council of Medical Research and Department of Health Research (ICMR-DHR) Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Device and Diagnostics Innovation and Commercialisation, IITG Director Prof T G Sitharam said it will work towards realising the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Atmanirbhar Bharat' in the domain of healthcare technology development. The innovations proposed in the centre are expected to cater to the societal needs related to diagnostics and healthcare delivery, especially in rural India, he said. The key objectives of the centre will be to detect biomarkers to detect various non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as chronic kidney disorder, post-diabetic complications, liver or pancreatic malfunctions, cardiac illnesses, and urinary tract infections. The centre will also develop frugal point-of-care diagnostic devices for the collection, storage, security, and analysis of the data specific to rural India, and develop three indigenous products in the domain of healthcare that can be commercially successful in the near future and innovate indigenous alternatives to healthcare devices. In the next few decades, especially keeping the post-pandemic scenario in perspective, the focus of healthcare innovation would be to develop frugal technologies to cater to the needs of the last mile population, Head of Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology Prof Dipankar Bandyopadhyay said.—PTI

Guwahati:&nbsp;A man allegedly made his two children drink poison before consuming it himself at his residence in Assam's Sivasagar town, an official said.The shocking incident happened on Wednesday and came to light on Thursday.The man, identified as Mridul Handique is a resident of the Bogidole area on the outskirts of Sivsagar town.As per reports, when neighbours came to know about the incident, Handique and his two children were rushed to the hospital. But his 6-year-old son Pintu Handique was declared brought dead by the doctors.Mridul also passed away in the hospital.Sivsagar district Superintendent of Police, Subhrajyoti Borah told IANS that Handique's other son aged 10 years was in a critical condition, and undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh."Doctors are hopeful that he will survive," said Borah.According to the preliminary investigation, police found that the man had some domestic issues with his wife.The wife and daughters were living separately for the last few months and police suspect that a family conflict may have lead to this unfortunate incident.Meanwhile, the bodies of both father and son were sent for post-mortem.—IANS

Guwahati:&nbsp;IIT-Guwahati has resumed its classes completely in physical mode, a statement said on Friday. More than 7,400 students are now attending classes in classrooms with the batch admitted during the pandemic attending full-semester classes in person for the first time, it said. IIT-Guwahati was the first among IITs to bring back all students to campus and start offline classes back in March 2022, and presently all academic activities will be held offline beginning with the July 2022-23 semester. IIT-Guwahati has all COVID-19 related precautions in place, and is currently hosting a massive vaccine drive to ensure the safety of its students, the statement said. "The campus is filled with zeal and enthusiasm again with the presence of students all across and the environment is full of life now. This will facilitate more intellectual interaction among the community and benefit everyone, including those who were dependent for their livelihoods on the IIT-G campus," director TG Sitharam said. The students are now exploring a plethora of opportunities that they lacked during online classes, he added.—PTI

Guwahati:&nbsp;The West Bengal CID, which had sent a team to Assam last week, has summoned a Guwahati-based businessman to Kolkata on Monday in connection with the probe into the Jharkhand MLA cash seizure case, an Assam Police official said.The Assam Police official said that the West Bengal CID, a team of which visited various places in Guwahati last week, has pasted the summons notice at the premises of businessman Ashok Dhanuka's house here.According to media reports, Dhanuka and his son Ghanshyam Dhanuka are supposed to be close to a top political family of ruling BJP in Assam.According to the official, the Bengal CID team has asked Ashok Dhanuka to appear in Bengal CID headquarters Bhavani Bhavan at 10 a.m. on Monday.A source claimed that the CID team in Guwahati had gone to Dhanuka's house on Saturday to serve the notice but failed to meet the businessman as the house was guarded by the Assam Police.The Bengal CID team came to Guwahati to collect CCTV footage and other evidence regarding the arrest of three Congress MLAs from Jharkhand. They collected CCTV footages from the Gopinath Bordoloi International airport in Guwahati and a hotel.On July 30 evening, the three Congress MLAs of Jharkhand -- Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kacchap and Naman Bixal Kongari -- were nabbed by the police at Howrah's Panchla, with huge amount of cash in their vehicle.The MLAs told the police that the cash was meant for purchasing sarees from the wholesale market at Burrabazar in central Kolkata to distribute in their constituencies on the occasion of the World Tribal Day. Guwahati:&nbsp;A Bangladeshi national has been arrested in Assam' Morigaon over suspicion of smuggling cattle from India to Bangladesh, said an official.The Superintendent of Police in Morigaon district, Aparna Natrajan told IANS that they detained the person on Saturday evening and later he was arrested.The man was identified as Nuruz Zaman. He was a resident of Banglabazar in the Sunamganj area of Bangladesh.The police officer informed that Zaman entered India with a valid tourist VISA through the Dawki border in Meghalaya on July 14. He then came to Assam and roamed in the Moirabari area of the Morigaon district.Though he was a tourist, Zaman was looking to buy cattle from the local market. He even bought some cattle and only then he came under the scanner of the local police informers.Natrajan said, "He was tracked by the police for the last several days. The man was planning to smuggle those cattle through the Dawki border to Bangladesh."Police have seized many objectionable documents from his possession. There were lots of photographs of the cattle markets, huge Indian currency notes, and Indian SIM cards.—IANS

Guwahati: Assam has received the approval of the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the ninth medical college in the state. It has been set up in Dhubri.
As per a letter from the NMC, approval has been granted for starting the MBBS course with an intake of 100 students annually from the academic year 2022-23.
A top health official said that the infrastructure facilities of the new medical college, laboratories, library, hostels, hospital and availability of faculty were assessed by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) and following which the approval was given.
The Board has also reviewed the overall progress of other facilities at this medical college in a virtual hearing before giving its nod.
Executive Director at the Assam National Health Mission, Manoj Choudhury told IANS that many new medical colleges are in the pipeline.
The health department will seek approval for two medical colleges in Kokrajhar and Nalbari later this year. The construction of Nagaon medical college is almost complete and it may get NMC's nod early next year.
He also said the state government has also sanctioned medical colleges in Tinsukia and Bongaigaon districts. Guwahati is set to get a new medical college within the next two years.
The shortage of doctors was always an issue of concern in Assam.
"The situation is changing very fast. We now have 1,200 seats for medical admission including Dhubri," added Choudhury. —IANS

Guwahati: Kerala Blasters FC secured the first victory of their Durand Cup campaign as they eased past NorthEast United FC in a comfortable 3-0 victory in their Group D fixture at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Saturday.
A brace from Mohammed Aimen (28', 90') and a goal from AjsaMuhammed l (55') outnumbered NorthEast United FC to hand full points to the Blasters.
NorthEast United FC hit the ground running by being quick on the ball right from kick-off with a handful number of chances being created in the opening minutes of the game, but the Blasters' shot-stopper Sachin Suresh calmly took charge of the situation.
The Highlanders imposed themselves on the Blasters', putting them on the back foot as the former kept looking for spaces to create more attacking chances.
Tomasz Tchorz's men found their first big chance of the game in the 21st minute after Roshan's attempt from a free kick found Marwan on the right, as the latter's glancing header narrowly sailed over the bar.
A quick counter-attack from the Blasters opened the way for the first goal of the game as Muhammad Ajsal's blocked shot fell through to Muhammed Aimen, who with an exquisite first touch slot it home to make it 1-0 for his side.
Subam Rabha's men were kept busy by the Tuskers who constantly were creating chances after Roshan went on a running spree, easily getting past three defenders but his shot went wide off the post.
The Blasters maintained their attacking consistency in the second half, and were rewarded with a second goal after Ajsal found himself in an open position to receive Azhar's ball, and smashed it past the keeper to hand his side a two-goal cushion in the 55th minute.
In the 65th minute, the Blasters almost scored the third goal of the night as a lightning counterattack by Tomasz Tchorz's men ended up with a quality block by a Highlanders' defender after their blunder in the opposite half.
Minutes later, the Highlanders were slenderly close to scoring an equaliser but a last-ditch tackle by Tejas scrapped any chance of losing their lead.
Right before the stroke of full-time, Aimen netted his second of the night and the third for his side as he went round the keeper and latched it past the net after receiving a long ball from Azhar.
The Tuskers' take the field again on Wednesday as they face Army Green FT while the Highlanders will lock horns with Sudeva Delhi FC two days later.&nbsp;

Tourists and businesspeople from the northeastern states who want to take advantage of the Mitali Express can now do so thanks to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which has opened an overseas ticketing counter at the Guwahati railway station.&nbsp;
According to Sabyasachi De, chief public relations officer of the NFR, tickets for the Mitali Express were initially only available at the Kolkata and New Jalpaiguri stations.&nbsp;
He announced that people could now book tickets for the Mitali Express without having to go to New Jalpaiguri or Kolkata.&nbsp;
New Jalpaiguri, in north Bengal, is 333 kilometres from Guwahati, the capital of Assam. Six out of the eight northeastern states, minus Meghalaya and Sikkim, as well as seven districts in West Bengal and five districts in north Bihar are served by the NFR, one of India's seventeen railway zones.&nbsp;
