New Delhi (The Hawk): In spite of the court's order, activist and Bhima Koregaon case defendant Gautam Navlakha has not been placed under house arrest. The Supreme Court has agreed to hear his new petition on Friday.
On Thursday, Navlakha's attorney brought the issue before a bench presided over by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. The attorney claimed that the November 10th ruling from the highest court regarding house arrest was not being carried out.
NIA's Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that Navlakha gave information about a Communist party-owned library that doubled as a residence rather than giving his home address. Mehta's submissions were opposed by Navlakha's attorney. It was mentioned that it was a library, according to the attorney.
Mehta claimed that the NIA has submitted an application and is also asking the court for specific instructions. Mehta requested that the case be listed in court on Monday.
Following a hearing of brief arguments, the Supreme Court announced that the bench led by Justice KM Joseph, who had issued the order for house arrest, will hear both the NIA's and the accused's arguments on Friday.
After taking into account his failing health, the top court permitted Navlakha to be placed under house arrest on November 10. They also ordered him to post a local surety of Rs 2 lakh by November 14.
The top court set forth a number of requirements before approving the 70-year-one-month old's house arrest in Mumbai. The bench set the case's next hearing for December 13 and stated, "We would think on a conspectus of the facts that we should allow the petitioner to be placed under house arrest at least to begin with until the next date of hearing from the date on which he is actually placed on house arrest."
On September 29, the Supreme Court ordered that Gautam Navlakha, who was imprisoned in the Bhima Koregaon case, be transferred right away to Mumbai's Jaslok hospital for medical attention.
Navlakha filed a petition with the Supreme Court to review the Bombay High Court's April judgement rejecting his request to be moved from Taloja Prison and given house arrest in its place. He was taken into custody in August 2018 and initially put under house arrest. Following an order from the Supreme Court, he was transferred to Maharashtra's Taloja Central Prison in April 2020.

Hiroshima (Japan): Periodontitis, or gum disease, can cause a slew of dental problems, ranging from foul breath to bleeding and tooth loss. Hiroshima University researchers have discovered that it may be linked to far more serious disorders elsewhere in the body -- the heart.
In a study published in JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology, the team found a significant correlation between periodontitis and fibrosis -- scarring to an appendage of the heart's left atrium that can lead to an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation -- in a sample of 76 patients with cardiac disease.
"Periodontitis is associated with a long-standing inflammation, and inflammation plays a key role in atrial fibrosis progression and atrial fibrillation pathogenesis," said first author Shunsuke Miyauchi, assistant professor with the Hiroshima University's Health Service Center. He is also affiliated with the university's Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences, adding, "We hypothesized that periodontitis exacerbates atrial fibrosis. This histological study of left atrial appendages aimed to clarify the relationship between clinical periodontitis status and degree of atrial fibrosis."
The left atrial appendages were surgically removed from the patients, and the researchers analyzed the tissue to establish the correlation between the severity of the atrial fibrosis and the severity of the gum disease. They found that the worse the periodontitis, the worse the fibrosis, suggesting that the inflammation of gums may intensify inflammation and disease in the heart.
"This study provides basic evidence that periodontitis can aggravate atrial fibrosis and can be a novel modifiable risk factor for atrial fibrillation," said corresponding author Yukiko Nakano, professor of cardiovascular medicine in Hiroshima University's Graduate School of Biomedical and Health Sciences.
According to Nakano, in addition to improving other risk factors such as weight, activity levels, and tobacco and alcohol use, periodontal care could aid in comprehensive atrial fibrillation management. However, she cautioned that this study did not establish a causal relationship, meaning that while gum disease and atrial fibrosis degrees of severity appear connected, researchers have not found that one definitively leads to the other.
"Further evidence is required for establishing that periodontitis contributes to the atrial fibrosis in a causal manner and that periodontal care can alter fibrosis," Nakano said, adding, "One of our goals is to confirm that periodontitis is a modifiable risk factor for atrial fibrillation and to promote dental specialists' participation in comprehensive atrial fibrillation management. Periodontitis is an easily modifiable target with lower cost among known atrial fibrillation risk factors. Thus, the achievement of this study series may bring benefits for many people worldwide."
Next, the researchers said they hope to conduct future clinical trials to clarify if periodontal intervention reduces atrial fibrillation occurrence and improves patient outcomes. —ANI

Argument mapping is a great way to challenge students to show their thinking and arrive at conclusions in a logical, reasoned manner. In this article, we’ll look at what argument mapping is, the benefits and drawbacks of it, and how to use it in the classroom.
Argument Mapping Defined
Especially when dealing with complex or controversial issues, it can be difficult to think clearly and logically. Argument mapping gives students a visual way to break down and clarify their thoughts to see if they’re coming to the best conclusion. According to ReasoningLab.comopens in new window:
Argument maps are box-and-line diagrams that lay out visually reasoning and evidence for and against a statement or claim. A good map clarifies and organizes thinking by showing the logical relationships between thoughts that are expressed simply and precisely. Argument maps are driven by asking, “Should I believe that? Why or why not?”
Similar to mind mapping, students begin an argument map with a central idea, or contention, and then draw branches off that contention to show why their argument is valid. Here are the different parts of an argument map in more detail:
Contention: The central argument, idea, or position the student is examining. Also sometimes called the conclusion, argument, or claim.
Reasons: The foundational ideas supporting the contention. Also sometimes called the premises.
Objections: Reasons one might object or argue against the contention.

That’s why it’s important not to depend solely on the visual diagram when teaching how to form arguments. Instead, make sure to let your auditory learners talk about their arguments aloud, or let your kinesthetic learners move around or use objects to represent the different parts of their argument.
Group work: Argument mapping is not always effective for group work. Students may be able to construct a map together (i.e., come up with reasons and evidence together), but teachers should keep an eye on groups to make sure they don’t become ideological echo chambers or hostile to other groups’ positions.
Hot-button issues: Argument mapping is designed to help people look past emotions and make rational claims. However, some issues are so loaded and controversial that students might become contentious discussing them regardless of the method you use.

Here are some examples of how you might use argument mapping in the classroom:
Teaching the Parts of an Argument
When students hear the word argument, they likely think of emotional disagreements, not reasoned debates. Simply drawing a map and defining each part can help you teach students the different components of an argument and give them a blueprint for how to think through issues in writing and conversation.

Helsinki (Finland): According to a University of Helsinki study, substituting red and processed meat with pea-protein intake, b and faba bean-based foods ensures enough amino acid intake without having any negative effects on bone metabolism. "Decreasing the consumption of red and processed meat in the diet to the upper limit of the Planetary Health Diet while increasing the consumption of legumes cultivated in Finland, such as peas and faba beans, is safe from the perspective of protein nutrition. Similarly, bone health is not compromised by such a dietary change either," says Docent Suvi Itkonen from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. In the BeanMan study, 102 Finnish men followed a study diet for six weeks. - One group consumed 760 grams of red and processed meat per week, which accounted for 25% of the total protein intake. The amount corresponds to the average protein consumption of Finnish men. - The other group consumed food products based on legumes, mainly peas and faba beans, corresponding to 20% of the total protein intake. In addition, the amount of red and processed meat consumed per week in this group amounted to the upper limit of the Planetary Health Diet (200 g or 5% of the total protein intake). Otherwise, the study subjects followed their habitual diet but were not allowed to eat other red or processed meat or legumes than those provided by the study. The researchers did not find any differences between the dietary groups in markers of bone formation or resorption. Neither did the intake of calcium or vitamin D differ between the groups. Calcium intake was in line with the current dietary recommendations, and the intake of vitamin D was very close to the recommendations. Mean essential amino acid and protein intakes met the recommendations in both groups. "Reducing red meat consumption is extremely important in terms of environmental impact," Itkonen notes. Increasingly plant-based diets are becoming more and more popular, and the recently updated Nordic Nutrition Recommendations also emphasise the restriction of meat consumption and the moderation of dairy consumption. "In this study, the subjects consumed dairy products as in their habitual diets, thus their calcium and vitamin D intakes were unchanged. However, in terms of bone health, it is important to bear in mind that if one reduces the amount of dairy in the diet, it is necessary to ensure the intake of calcium and vitamin D from other sources. These sources can be plant-based beverages and yoghurt-like products fortified with those nutrients or, when necessary, dietary supplements," Itkonen points out. Other findings in the BeanMan study related to, among others, lipid metabolism, gut health and nutrient intakes will be published later. —ANI

Jammu: A woman and her two minor daughters were charred to death in a fire incident late on Wednesday evening in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district.  Police said that a woman identified as Najma Begum, and her two minor daughters Iqra and Asma died on the spot in a devastating fire incident in Bingara village of Ramban district while her husband Ibrahim and one Mirja Begum were injured.  “The injured have been shifted to a hospital. Five huts were destroyed in this fire incident,” they added.  Lt Governor Manoj Sinha has expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident. “Deeply pained by the loss of precious lives in a tragic fire incident in Bingara Village, Ramban. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayers for the speedy recovery of those injured. Directed district administration to provide all possible assistance,” the Lt Governor said in a post on microblogging site X.

Vijayawada: Vijayawada ACB Court has posted to Tuesday orders on ‘house custody’ petition of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who is in judicial custody in alleged Skill Development scam.
After hearing detailed arguments from both sides, the court adjourned the case to Tuesday.
Naidu’s counsel Sidharth Luthra sought orders for ‘house custody’ of Chandrababu Naidu on the ground that he is Z plus category protectee and faces threat in jail.
He expressed doubts over the measures taken for his security in the jail. He pointed out that convicts in serious crimes are lodged in the jail.
Luthdra cited Supreme Court judgments for house custody in various six cases in supported of his arguments
Additional Advocate General P. Sudhakar Reddy argued the case on behalf of the government. He told the judge that Naidu will have more security in jail than at his house.
He explained to the court the steps taken for Naidu’s security and food. A letter from the Director General of Prisons, listing out the steps taken by Rajahmundry jail authorities, was submitted to the court
The court was told that the prison walls are 50 feet high. Police are on round-the-clock security both inside and outside the jail.
The AAG also told the court that Naidu has a sound health and necessary facilities can be provided in the jail.
The court had Sunday sent Naidu to judicial custody for 14 days. He was subsequently shifted to Rajahmundry Central Jail.&nbsp;

Hyderabad: In a setback to former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Friday dismissed his petition to quash the FIR registered against him in skill development case and to set aside his judicial remand.
The high court, which had reserved its orders on Wednesday, pronounced the same on Friday, hours after a Vijayawada ACB Court extended his judicial custody till September 24.
Single bench of Justice Sreenivas Reddy did not agree with the arguments of the counsels of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief challenging his arrest and judicial remand in the case.
Appearing on behalf of Harish Salve, the counsels had argued that the case against Naidu was politically motivated.
The counsel had submitted to the court that the Crime Investigation Department (CID) did not take prior permission from the Governor before arresting Naidu as required under section 17A of Prevention of Corruption Act.
Mukul Rohatgi, who had argued the case on behalf of CID, had contended that section 17A of PC Act does not apply as the CID investigation started before the amendment of July 26, 2018.
Naidu was arrested in the case by the CID in Nandyal on September 9. The next day, ACB Court in Vijayawada sent him to judicial custody for 14 days. The former chief minister was subsequently shifted to Rajahmundry Central Jail.
The Vijayawada Court had also rejected Naidu’s plea for house custody instead of judicial custody.
The case relates to the establishment of clusters of Centers of Excellence (CoEs) in the state of Andhra Pradesh, with a total estimated project value of Rs 3,300 crore when Naidu was the chief minister.
The CID claimed that the alleged fraud has caused a huge loss of Rs 371 crore to the state government. The agency claimed that an advance of Rs 371 crore, representing the entire 10 per cent commitment by the government for the project, was released before any expenditure by the private entities.
According to the CID, most of the money released by the government as advance was diverted to shell companies through fake invoices, with no actual delivery or sale of the items mentioned in the invoices, CID officials said.
The CID mentioned in its remand report that the total amount spent by private entities on six skill development clusters is sourced exclusively from funds advanced by the state government and the Andhra Pradesh Skill Development Centre, totalling Rs 371 crore.

HC dismisses Chandrababu Naidu’s quash petition in skill development case

London: A British-born woman who went to Syria as a schoolgirl to join Islamic State lost her latest appeal on Friday over the removal of her British citizenship.
The British government took away Shamima Begum's citizenship on national security grounds in 2019, shortly after she was found in a detention camp in Syria.  Begum, now 24, argued the decision was unlawful, in part because British officials failed to properly consider whether she was a victim of trafficking, an argument that was rejected by a lower court in February 2023.  The Court of Appeal in London rejected her appeal on Friday following an appeal in October.  Judge Sue Carr said: "It could be argued that the decision in Ms Begum's case was harsh. It could also be argued that Ms Begum is the author of her own misfortune.  "But it is not for this court to agree or disagree with either point of view. Our only task is to assess whether the deprivation decision was unlawful.  "We have concluded it was not and the appeal is dismissed."  The government welcomed the ruling.  "Our priority remains maintaining the safety and security of the UK and we will robustly defend any decision made in doing so," a spokesperson for the interior ministry said.
Heated debate  Friday's ruling is the latest chapter in a long-running legal battle which has already reached the United Kingdom's Supreme Court – and could do so again.  Begum's case has been the subject of heated debate in Britain, between those who argue she willingly joined a terrorist group and others who say she was a child when she left, or should face justice for any alleged crimes in Britain.  She left London in 2015, aged 15, and travelled with two school friends to Syria, where she married an IS fighter and gave birth to three children, all of whom died as infants.  Begum has been in the al-Roj camp since 2019, with thousands of other foreign women and children.  Begum's lawyer, Samantha Knights, had told the Court of Appeal that Britain had a legal duty to consider whether she was a potential victim of trafficking, or if there had been any failures by the state before removing her British citizenship.  She also argued that Begum's entry into Syria was "facilitated by a Canadian agent" working for IS – an allegation which first emerged in 2015.  However, lawyers representing the British government said the decision to revoke someone's citizenship must be "focused on the risks posed by the individual, irrespective of how they might have come to be a risk".

Kolkata: A 49-year-old Trinamool Congress leader from Ashoknagar in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district was shot dead by a group of men, following an altercation between them over a land deal, police said on Monday.
The TMC leader, identified as Bijan Das, was killed when he went to the house of a party colleague, he added.
Das, the deputy head of Guma 1 panchayat, was shot twice from point-blank range, the police officer said, adding that one bullet hit his head and another pierced through his left ear.

New Delhi: A youth was stabbed to death by two juveniles in north Delhi's Timarpur area after he refused to give them a matchbox for lighting their cigarettes, police said on Sunday.
The police said they have apprehended both the accused teenagers. According to the police, a PCR call was received on Saturday at the Timarpur police station regarding a stabbing incident. "On reaching the spot, a police team found that there was a pool of blood inside of an autorickshaw and around it," Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) M K Meena said, adding that the injured person was shifted to Hindu Rao Hospital by then.

The crime scene was inspected and the statement of an eyewitness was recorded, he added. On checking the CCTV footage of the crime spot, the police zeroed in on the two juveniles and apprehended them on Sunday, Meena said. "A knife used in the commission of the offence has been recovered," he said. On questioning, the duo revealed that one of them had asked the victim to give him a matchbox to light cigarettes but he refused to do so, which led to a verbal spat. As the argument escalated, one of the juveniles attacked the victim with a knife and the duo fled the spot, the DCP said. One of the apprehended juveniles was previously involved in another heinous crime, he said.
