Ranchi (The Hawk): Nationwide protests against the government's decision to designate Parasnath Hill in the Jharkhand district of Giridih as a tourist destination are being held by members of the Jain community.
Several Jain monks have called on the government to reverse its decision, and protests have been held in a dozen cities over the course of the past week.
Sammed Shikhar, also known as Parasnath Hill, is the most important Jains' pilgrimage site worldwide. It is cherished by Jain because it is the "Nirvana" (salvation) land of 20 of the 24 Tirthankaras.
The Jain organisation claims that if it is designated as a tourist site, the sanctity of this place of prayer will be disturbed. There will be a rise in unethical behaviours such as meat intake and alcohol use, which will upset the feelings of the "non-violent" Jain society.
The highest hill in Jharkhand is called Parasnath, and it is encircled by a forest. At the base of the hill, there are a large number of Jain temples. On August 2, 2019, the Union Forest Ministry recognised a portion of Parasnath as a wildlife sanctuary and eco-sensitive zone following a recommendation by the Jharkhand government.
According to the Jain society, it is "totally inappropriate" to permit ecotourism and other nonreligious activity in the region.
Rallies by members of the Jain community have been held across the nation in protest of the government's notification designating Sammed Shikhar as a tourist destination.
On the request of the Vishwa Jain Sangathan, a silent march was conducted on Tuesday in the city of Dhar in Madhya Pradesh.
On Sunday, a sizable gathering of members of the Digambar and Shwetambar Jain communities took place in Indore. Similar protests also occurred in Dungarpur, Katni, Khandwa, Banswara, Dhar, and Ajmer.
Speaking to the media in Delhi, Mahayogi Shraman Shri 108 Viharsh Sagar Ji Gurudev said, "Shri Sammed Shikharji is the eternal sacred place of Jains, and today the entire society is united for its protection and security."

CM Yogi addressed the eighth meeting of the Governing Council of NITI Aayog on Saturday and outlined the accomplishments of Uttar Pradesh in seven points.
In a meeting held at Pragati Maidan in Delhi, the Chief Minister said, "By adopting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's mantra of reform, perform, and transform, Uttar Pradesh has become the dream destination for industrial investment in the nation."
He listed step-by-step the accomplishments of UP in the areas of MSME, women's safety, infrastructure development, PM Gati Shakti, health, and nutrition.
The Chief Minister said that on the Prime Minister's instruction, the citizens are devotedly working to create a developed India with "Panchpran" today.
Yogi stated that the state of Uttar Pradesh, which has a population of about 25 crores, is not only India's largest consumer and labour market, but also has abundant natural resources as well as fertile plains with the presence of continuously flowing rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saryu.
"The Uttar Pradesh government has a policy of zero tolerance towards crime and corruption. The contribution of Uttar Pradesh to the country's GDP is more than 8 per cent. Uttar Pradesh has resolved to grow into trillion dollar economy in the next five years in order to achieve the Prime Minister's target of making the country's economy five trillion dollars," he said.
He added that more than 22,000 MoUs of about Rs 35 lakh crore were signed in the UP Global Investors Summit-2023 in February in the state capital Lucknow, which will create more than 1 crore employment opportunities.
The Chief Minister said that Uttar Pradesh has the maximum number of 96 lakh MSME units.
"The state government is constantly striving and committed to the development of this sector. Each district of the state has a unique identity for its traditional product. The state government has done the work of taking these products to a new height by declaring them ODOPs," he added.
Asserting that Uttar Pradesh has made significant progress in developing infrastructure, Yogi said, "Uttar Pradesh is developing as 'Express-way Pradesh' with 13 existing and proposed expressways. Three international airports are operational in the state whereas two new international airports are under construction in Ayodhya and Noida."
Similarly, Uttar Pradesh Warehousing and Logistics Policy, City Development Plan, and State Capital Region (SCR) were also discussed in the meeting. Referring to the minimization of compliances, the Chief Minister said that 4,094 compliances of about 40 departments were minimised. Also, 577 compliances were reduced under the decriminalization category. Apart from this, 947 unnecessary acts/regulations/rules etc. have been abolished.
Talking about women's empowerment, he said, "In the last six years, extensive efforts have been made in the state to provide a safe environment to women. Uttar Pradesh has been awarded the first prize in the implementation of ICIS for prosecution for two consecutive years (2021 and 2022) by the Government of India."
In terms of health and nutrition, the Chief Minister said that in the last six years, there was unprecedented success in the control of communicable diseases, especially JE and AES in eastern Uttar Pradesh. About 21.40 lakh poor beneficiaries have been treated under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Along with this, Ayushman cards have been distributed to more than 1 crore families. —ANI

Dr. Jitendra Singh while referring to the lavender cultivation in the region, said that Lavender is an avenue of employment generation and research opening many paradigms of development.
The lavender cultivation has changed the lives of many farmers and it is heartening to note that Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, in the 99th Edition of Mann ki Baat, appreciated the efforts of the Council of Scientific &amp; Industrial Research- Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM) in supporting farmers in the cultivation of Lavender in the Bhaderwah, Doda district, J&amp;K under CSIR-Aroma Mission. He said, "Farmers had been engaged in traditional maize cultivation for decades, but some farmers thought of doing something different. They turned to floriculture, that is, the cultivation of flowers. Today, around two and a half thousand farmers are cultivating Lavender here. They have also been handheld through the Aroma Mission of the Central Government. This new cultivation has greatly increased the income of the farmers." The CSIR-Aroma Mission is a flagship project of CSIR under which Lavender cultivation is being promoted in the temperate regions of J&amp;K. The aim of the project is to increase the income of small and marginal farmers and develop agriculture-based Startups. The project is being directly monitored by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon'ble Union Minister of State (IC) of the Ministry of Science &amp; Technology. Under his directions, CSIR-IIIM is implementing Lavender cultivation in Bhaderwah and other parts of J&amp;K. It is important to mention that over many decades of scientific interventions, the CSIR-IIIM has developed its elite variety (RRL-12) and agrotechnology of Lavender. The variety of Lavender is highly suitable for cultivation in the rainfed temperate regions of India. Under CSIR-Aroma Mission, CSIR-IIIM introduced Lavender and provided more than 30 Lakh free Lavender plants to the farmers of different districts of J&amp;K. The end-to-end technology package for cultivation, processing, value addition, and marketing of the Lavender crop were also provided to the farmers. CSIR-IIIM installed fifty distillation units (45 fixed and five mobile) at different locations across J&amp;K to support farmers in processing their produce.
Many small and marginal maize farmers in the temperate regions of the Jammu division have successfully adopted Lavender. Lavender cultivation has employed large numbers of farmers and young entrepreneurs in the geographically remote regions of J&amp;K. Due to the intervention of CSIR-IIIM, a new industry around Lavender cultivation has developed in the region. More than 2500 farmers are cultivating Lavender in different parts of J&amp;K. Women are primarily employed in the Lavender fields for harvesting and processing the flower, which has increased women's income in the region. Many young entrepreneurs have started small-scale businesses through the value addition of Lavender oil, hydrosol, and flowers. CSIR-IIIM conducted many skills development programs and trained more than 2500 farmers and young entrepreneurs from J&amp;K on Lavender cultivation, processing, value addition, and marketing.
The net annual income of farmers who switched from maize to Lavender cultivation has increased many folds from around Rs. 40,000/- to Rs. 60,000/- per hectare to Rs. 3,50,000/- to Rs. 6,00,000/- per hectare. Farmers of the Bhaderwah, Doda district, produced 300, 500, 800, and 1500 Litres of Lavender oil in 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively. They earned &gt; Rs. 5.0 Crore between 2018-2022 by selling dry flowers, Lavender plants, and Lavender oil. The successful end-to-end technology transfer on the cultivation of Lavender to the farmers of J&amp;K by CSIR-IIIM, Jammu, under Aroma Mission has been widely covered nationally and internationally by print and electronic media. The media has recognized this initiative of CSIR-IIIM as the "Purple Revolution." CSIR-IIIM received the CSIR award for S&amp;T innovations for rural development (CAIRD- 2020) for Purple Revolution in Jammu &amp; Kashmir: Rural Development Through Lavender Cultivation in J&amp;K.

Noida: To make it one of the biggest investment destination, a whopping Rs 8500 crore will be spent in the first phase to develop New Noida, which will also be known as the Dadri-Noida-Ghaziabad Investment Region (DNGIR).&nbsp;
Information indicates that Rs 4500 crore will be spent on the acquisition of 3000 hectares of land, while Rs 4000 crore will be spent for the development of 1500 hectares of land. As soon as the authority receives funding from the government, land purchase will begin.
Ritu Maheshwari, the CEO of Noida Authority, has asked the School of Planning and Architecture, which is in charge of making its plan, to make a financial model. There should be no  shortcoming in the matter of compensation, as per the clear instructions, hence the financial plan should be made in such a way that the farmers would get the proper compensation while acquiring the land.
New Noida will be developed across 21,102 hectares spread through 85 villages of Greater Noida and Bulandshahar, where residential, industrial, institutional, traffic and transport, green area, and utility, water body, etc will be available. This will include developing 41 percent industrial areas, 11.5 percent residential areas, 17 percent greenery, 15.5 percent roads, 9 percent institutional areas, and 4.5 percent commercial areas.
This will include 20 villages in Gautam Budh Nagar and 60 villages in Bulandshahar. Big companies like Ikea, Adani, and Microsoft have showed interest in investing in New Noida. Mumbai: Ahead of the release of his upcoming film ‘Jawan’, superstar Shah Rukh Khan paid a visit to Vaishno Devi shrine in the Himalayas.  According to reports, the actors offered prayers at the revered shrine atop Trikuta hills in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. He reached the shrine late Tuesday night to pay his obeisance.  A video has been doing the rounds on social media, where the actor is seen at Vaishno Devi, dressed in a blue jacket and his face fully covered. In the clip, police officials of the Vaishno Devi shrine are seen, some policemen and personal staff of the star could also be seen in the clip.
This is not the first time he visited the shrine. He visited Vaishno Devi nine months ago in December last year, over a month before the release of his blockbuster hit 'Pathaan'.  'Jawan' is a Red Chillies Entertainment presentation directed by Atlee, produced by Gauri Khan, and co-produced by Gaurav Verma. The film will release worldwide in theatres on September 7, 2023, in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu languages.

Kerala: Over 1800 stakeholders to take part in Global Travel Mart

Panaji: Clarifying that foreign tourists, particularly women have always preferred Goa as a favourite destination on account of safety and security, Goa Director General of Police (DGP) Jaspal Singh has said that the Canadian High Commission’s advisory to its citizens is not based on facts.
“Although it is a part of an overall general advisory cautioning its citizens to be careful while visiting Delhi and Goa, however so far as it concerns Goa, it is not based on facts,” Singh said.
He said that the crime statistics also do not support the contention of the advisory. “Particularly, in the current year till September 15, there has only been one incident where a foreign women tourist belonging to the Netherlands was a victim and the accused was arrested. Similarly, in the year 2022, there were only two cases — one relating to a Russian national and the other to a British national. In both the cases the accused were immediately arrested,” he said.
“Therefore, the Canadian advisory is not based on facts. Moreover, the high diplomatic staff belonging to various countries who visit Goa have always complimented Goa about the safe and secure environment it provides to tourists visiting Goa from all parts of the world,”Singh said.
“Significantly, the last time a crime was committed against a Canadian citizen was in 2015. Thereafter, no Canadian citizen was ever a victim of crime. It shows that this advisory is malicious, malafide and not based on facts and appears to have been issued on account of extraneous reasons,” he said.

'Canada advisory not based on facts', says Goa DGP

Chennai: Given the current situation between India and Canada, there may be a drop in the number of Indian students going to Canada for higher studies, said a consultant with Star Global Education Alliance.
“Many students who were keen on choosing Canada as their desired destination are now looking at alternatives in countries like the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the USA,” Ravi Veeravalli, Principal Consultant, Star Global Education Alliance, told IANS.
According to Veeravalli, there is a general sense of uneasiness in Canada among the students who are expecting some kind of retaliation by the Canadians.
“We are concerned about the evolving situation there. We are talking to our daughter studying there on a daily basis and have asked her to follow the instructions given by the Indian Embassy there,” a parent, whose daughter is studying in Canada, told IANS preferring anonymity.
“She chose Canada as the course cost there was comparatively lower than other countries,” he added.
“Indian students form the largest chunk of international students studying in Canada. The number of Indian students who were granted visas in 2022 was approximately 2,25,000. The contribution of Indian students to the Canadian exchequer is extremely significant, and so is in the area of skill shortages in the Canadian economy,” Veeravalli said.
Canada has been a favourite destination for students from North India despite around 50 per cent visa declines, he added.
The main attraction has been the post-study work permits which a student gets after the completion of education. In most of the cases. it spans from 1-3 years, Veeravalli said.
According to him, the Canadian qualifications and the subsequent post-study work provide an easy pathway to permanent residency (PR) there.
In the past two years, more than 10 lakh of visa grants have been issued to Indians by Canada, including visitor, student and citizenship. Canada is consistently granting over 4,00,000 PR applications every year for the past few years for applicants from all over the world, and a major chunk of it are people of Indian origin, Veeravalli added.

Shimla: Thousands of tourists thronged Himachal Pradesh during the long Christmas weekend with the Atal Tunnel in Rohtang joining Kullu and Lahaul &amp; Spiti as the most sought-after destination.
An estimated 65,000 people in more than 12,000 vehicles crossed the Tunnel on Sunday, according to police data.  The 9.2-kilometre Atal Tunnel is the world's highest single-tube tunnel above 10,000 feet. Rohtang received heavy snowfall on Saturday, prompting tourists to make a beeline for it.

 Large parts of Himachal Pradesh suffered heavy damage during two spells of rain this monsoon season. The heavy rain wreaked havoc in Mandi and Kullu districts, causing large-scale destruction. Shimla and Solan districts were hit during the second spell in August, with the capital city Shimla suffering heavy damage.  Sukhu also praised the efforts of the district administration and the police for efficiently managing the huge tourist influx and extending a helping hand to those stuck in the snow, particularly at the north and the south portals of the tunnel, where the temperature dropped to minus 12 degrees Celsius.  Director General of Police Sanjay Kundu said 'lakhs of tourists' have arrived in the state and appealed to them to prioritise safe travel practices and adhere to traffic rules.

Thousands throng Himachal for Christmas holidays, Atal Tunnel among sought-after destinations

Birds native to the high Himalayan realms are descending to lower areas post-snowfall, marking a stunning spectacle for tourists and visitors. Notably, the state birds - the vibrant monal and colorful tragopan populations - have notably surged. Khaliya Top, nestled at 3500 meters in Munshyari, is witnessing a gathering of these birds. The Himalayan Monal, the state bird, exhibits a higher presence this year, a study by the Monal Foundation reveals. Enthusiastic tourists are treated to the vivid sight of the colorful Tragopan, while Snow Partridges and Snow Cocks grace the Khaliya Top, renowned as a year-round tourist haven.

He notes a substantial increase in Monal and Tragopan numbers compared to the previous year. These avian species typically inhabit the Khalia Top area until February-March and occasionally venture into Betulidhar and Kalamuni areas, reaching heights of 4500 meters. Efforts to raise awareness for wildlife preservation have notably curbed bird hunting activities, fostering an environment conducive to their thriving. Secretary Surendra attributes the significant visibility of these birds to the success of biodiversity awareness campaigns.

Found in the Himalayan belts of India, Nepal, and Bhutan, this bird frequents altitudes ranging from 8000 to 14,000 feet in summer, descending during winter. Known for its shy disposition, the Tragopan primarily inhabits dense Buransh forests at altitudes between 2900 to 3400 meters. The male Tragopan, standing at 70 cm, flaunts a distinctive blue wattal (necklace) to attract females during courtship.
