New Delhi (The Hawk): During his two day visit to Bhopal, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Shri Arjun Munda&nbsp;today presided over the state level review meeting of tribal welfare at Rajiv Gandhi Bhawan, Bhopal. During the review meeting, the progress report of various schemes being run by the ministry in the state was presented to the minister through a presentation. During the review meeting, many schemes including Nutrition programme, Special Backward Tribes of the State programme, Pratibha Yojana, Akanksha Yojana, Housing Assistance Scheme were reviewed. Giving necessary instructions during the meeting, the Union Minister asked the officials&nbsp;to optimise the use of data management system&nbsp;so that the benefits of the schemes can reach the people in a better way.&nbsp;Union Tribal Affairs Minister Shri Arjun Munda also held an&nbsp;interaction with the tribal students of National Law University, Bhopal. Most of the students he interacted with are recipients of the Top Class Scholarship Scheme sponsored by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.&nbsp;After this, the Minister, while interacting with the beneficiaries of various welfare schemes, said that the present central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is fully dedicated to the development of tribal people. During this, the Minister held a detailed discussion regarding the work being done by Tribal Research&nbsp;Institute, Bhopal and future plans.&nbsp;The work being done by the organization was praised by the Minister and it was also suggested that the various tribes residing in Madhya Pradesh should be studied and surveyed area-wise for development indicators so that it can be known that how they are lagging in education, health, social and infrastructure and other facilities.&nbsp;This should be done especially for the special backward tribes of Madhya Pradesh, he said. Union Minister also suggested that a study should also be conducted on the tribal traditional system of medicine by the TRI and efforts should be made to bring them within the ambit of&nbsp;Department of AYUSH.&nbsp;During the visit, the Minister also visited the tribal museum located in the institute.&nbsp;Shri Arjun Munda also reviewed the construction work of a museum dedicated to the tribal freedom fighters under construction in Chhindwara by the Tribal Research Institute.&nbsp;The mini museum located in the institution was also inspected by the Union&nbsp;Minister.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bhopal:&nbsp;An 11-year-old tigress was found dead in Van Vihar National Park in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal city, an official said on Thursday.The big cat named Machmachi was found unconscious by a beat guard on Wednesday, and was declared dead following an examination, it was stated.The tigress was brought to Van Vihar after being rescued from Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in 2018, when she was seven to eight years old, park veterinarian Dr Atul Gupta said.The feline had adjusted to the environs of the national park, but had not eaten anything for the last two days and which was a regular feature, he said.The park authorities later performed the last rites after conducting an autopsy as per the rules, the official said, adding that the exact cause of the death will be known once the post-mortem report arrives.The animal's viscera and internal body parts will be sent to Jabalpur-based School of Wildlife and Forensic and Health, and the Animal Disease Examination Laboratory in Bhopal for investigations, the official said.—PTI

Raipur: The Centre-run Alliance Air on Sunday started a flight between Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh and Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, which will operate four days in a week.Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who was in Kanker district, virtually launched the inaugural flight which took off from the Bilasa Devi Kevat Airport in Bilaspur, located nearly 125 km from the state capital Raipur.The ATR 72-seater aircraft of the Alliance Air took off from Bilaspur at 11.35 am on Sunday for Bhopal with 50 passengers onboard. It will be operated four days a week (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday)," Bilaspur Collector Saransh Mittar said.The aviation services at the Bilaspur airport started on March 1 last year, with two flights connecting the city to Delhi via Jabalpur and Prayagraj, he said.On the occasion, CM Baghel said three-and-a-half-years ago, only Raipur was the destination for flight services, but now such services are also available in Jagdalpur (Bastar district) and Bilaspur.The Bilaspur-Bhopal domestic airline service will particularly be beneficial to the people from northern part of the state, he said.We have been making every possible effort to enhance air services in the state. The expansion of the Ambikapur airport runway is going on at a cost of Rs 43 crore, while work is also underway on the project to set up a commercial airport in Korba, Baghel said.Besides, work is also underway on the plan to develop an airstrip in Korea district, he added.—PTI

Bhopal : A contract (memorandum of understanding) was singed between MPMRCL and Alstom worth Rs 3200 crore aiming to provide benefit of Metro services to over 5.7 million people in Bhopal and Indore. As per the MPMRCL, Alstom will be responsible for installation of latest generation of communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling system as well as train control and telecommunication systems, each with seven years of comprehensive maintenance.In a statement issued on Wednesday, Altsom stated that it would be responsible for the design, manufacture, supply, installation, tests and commissioning of 52 standard gauge Movia metro passenger trains of 3-car configuration each.It said that 27 trains will be delivered for Bhopal and 25 trains for Indore. These metro trains would be built at Alstom’s state-of-the-art rolling stock manufacturing facility in Savli (Gujarat). These ultramodern, light-weight trains will operate at a top speed of 80 km/h, across the 31 km line in Bhopal with 30 stations and the 31.5 km line in Indore with 29 stations.“We are delighted to be awarded this significant contract from MPMRCL and this collaboration will lay a strong foundation for an efficient and sustainable mass transport system for the cities of Bhopal and Indore. Bhopal:&nbsp;A nine-year-old girl was raped by a watchman in a government-run school in Bhopal, police saidThe incident took place in the school located in the state capital’s Khoehefiza area on Friday and the matter came to light after the victim’s parents lodged a complaint on Saturday.According to the police, the victim, a student of the school, had gone to the bathroom and finding her alone there, the accused, raped her.“The victim went to the bathroom during lunch time. The accused grabbed the girl and raped her. Later some other students noticed the minor crying in pain and informed the school staff,” said the police.The victim told the teachers that an uncle wearing a yellow T-shirt took her to the bathroom and forced her to remove her clothers.The school staff immediately called the police.Later the parents of the victim lodged a complaint at the Khoehefiza police station. The victim identified the accused (Laxminarayan Dhanak) during the interrogation and he was arrested, the police said.According to the police, the victim had taken admission in the school a week ago in class four.“This is a serious issue that a girl was raped within the school premises. Our investigation in this case is still underway. We are also investigating if some other students have faced the same situation,” a police officer told IANS.The officer further said that school staff will also be interrogated as to why such people were employed without verification. —IANS

Bhopal:&nbsp;While the case of a Bhopal B-Tech student found dead in mysterious circumstances is yet to be solved, yet another engineering student was found dead on his institute's campus on Saturday, police said.Uddeshya Ahirwar, 22, a 4th year engineering student, was found hanging from a tree in the campus of the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) here, Anil Vajpayee, in-charge of Kamla Nagar police station, said.Ahirwar, a resident of Burhanpur district, was staying at campus hostel of MANIT college run under the Union Education Ministry, he said."The body has been sent for post-mortem examination and further investigation is underway. We are interrogating college staff and students staying in college campus," Vajpayee said.On July 24, the body of Nishank Rathore, who was a B-Tech student in Bhopal based college, was found cut into two pieces on railway tracks in Barkhedi-Midghat area in Raisen district.While the police investigation revealed that it was a suicide case, however, the family claimed Rathore was murdered.—IANS

Bhopal:&nbsp;The Madhya Pradesh Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has recovered Rs 85 lakh cash and documents related to other properties worth several crores from the house of a state government employee during a raid.EOW's raid was resumed after the accused Hero Keswani, an upper divisional clerk in the medical education department of the state government, was discharged from the hospital late on Wednesday. Keswani had attempted suicide by consuming floor-cleaning poison on Wednesday after seeing the EOW team at the door of his house.He was admitted to Bhopal's Hamidia hospital for treatment, which had prompted the EOW to suspend the raid. After Keswani was discharged from the hospital, the raid was resumed late on Wednesday.According to EOW sources, searches revealed assets worth more than 300 per cent disproportionate to his known sources of income.The raid was conducted at Keswani's bungalow located in the Bairagarh area in Bhopal. It also revealed that he had invested in several properties in the area.Keswani's role was already under scanner in connection with EOW's ongoing investigation into a case of alleged financial irregularities against renowned charitable trust - Jeev Seva Sansthaan at Bhopal. The office-bearers of the trust have already been summoned for questioning.—IANS

Bhopal:&nbsp;To ensure that upcoming festivals are celebrated in a peaceful atmosphere, maintaining harmony between the communities (Hindu-Muslim), Madhya Pradesh's Shajapur district police have come up with an initiative to involve local residents as social volunteers.Different groups of volunteers, comprising youth from both communities, were trained during a recent training camp organised at district police headquarters, and have given particular names such as - Police Mitra, Gram Suraksha Samiti, etc.During the one day training camp, Superintendent of Police (SP) Shajapur, Jagdeesh Davar has instructed the volunteers to keep a close watch on their respective areas allocated to them and to inform the police so that any untoward incident (if emerges), can be avoided.The step has been taken in view of upcoming religious festivals - Muharram (August 9-10), Rakshabandhan (August 11), and Janmashtmi (August 18-19). During the Muharram, the people of the Muslim community carry a procession called - 'Tazia'.Notably, the district has a mixed population of both Hindus and Muslims; and is considered a highly sensitive zone in the state. Communal incidents spark here every now and then, which keep the police on their toes, even during non-festival seasons."Even a scuffle broke out between individuals over some personal reasons would spark communal violence here. This entire Agar-Malwa region is considered a highly sensitive area due to communal clashes. Politically connected people plays a bigger role in making the tense situation for their own benefits," said another senior police officer posted in the district.A fresh such instance was reported during recently concluded local body elections when winning councillor Samiullah Khan, who is associated with the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), had raised slogan 'Pakistan Jindabad' after winning the election.The incident made the situation tense as hundreds of people from both the communities were present there. However, the police acted swiftly and arrested Khan, and the National Security Act (NSA) was imposed against him. At, present, Khan is in Ujjain Central Jail.Talking to IANS, SP Sanjeev Davar said, "Different group of volunteers to be deployed in both villages and town. Like, in Muslim populated areas, youths (volunteers) would ensure that weapons are not carried during the procession and if they notice anything untoward, they would immediately alert the police. Similarly, volunteers are deployed in Hindu-dominated areas with the same purpose."The security in the district is on high alert also because of Independence Day, for which the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' movement is underway. Dehradun: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the 23rd meeting of the Central Zonal Council held in Bhopal under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, said a press release.
The Chief Minister, with the help of the Center, started a special campaign for the rejuvenation of natural water sources in the mountainous region and gave importance to ecosystem services in the allocation of resources among the states and the floating population in the allocation of financial resources by the Central Government requested to be retained, added the statement.
The Chief Minister also requested cooperation in Uttarakhand for a strong weather forecasting system and infrastructure with Doppler radar. The Chief Minister also requested to organize the next meeting of the Central Zonal Council in Devbhoomi, Uttarakhand, as per the statement.
Expressing his gratitude for the cooperation of the Central Government in the development of the state, Chief Minister Shri Dhami said that under the able guidance of the Prime Minister, the reconstruction of Shri Kedarpuri, the master plan of the holy Badrinath Dham and the construction work of Rishikesh-Karnprayag rail project was on a war footing.
The state government is moving forward in the direction of implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state.
The Chief Minister said that keeping in view the inaccessible geographical conditions of the state in the determination of centrally funded schemes, special attention should be paid by the Government of India to prepare state-friendly tailor-made schemes in place of One Scheme Fit All. The state will benefit from tourism, horticulture and aromatic plant-based central schemes.
Suggesting to link the rainy rivers with glacier-based rivers on a scientific basis, the Chief Minister said that it would not only benefit the state of Uttarakhand but the entire nation. The Chief Minister also suggested starting a special campaign for the rejuvenation of natural water sources in the mountainous region with the help of the Government of India. He also requested cooperation from the Government of India for the speedy implementation of the stalled hydroelectric projects in Uttarakhand.
The Chief Minister said that the state of Uttarakhand is providing important ecosystem services to the nation by conserving its forests, bushes and glaciers. According to a study by the prestigious Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal, the annual value of these ecological services is at least Rs. 95,000 crore has been estimated. The Chief Minister requested to give importance to these ecological services in the allocation of resources among the states.
The Chief Minister said that a large number of pilgrims and tourists from the country and abroad travel to the state. The population of Uttarakhand is about 1.25 crore, but every year about six crore people come to Uttarakhand in the form of a floating population. In this way, the state government has to make arrangements for infrastructure facilities for about 1.25 crore people. Therefore, in view of the limited resources of the state, this important fact of the floating population should also be kept in mind in the allocation of financial resources by the central government.
The Chief Minister said that it is imperative to connect the border areas of Uttarakhand by road, railway and air. The all-weather road should be extended up to the marginal area. Tanakpur to Bageshwar railway line should be constructed in the Kumaon division of the state. Due to limited resources, the state of Uttarakhand should get an exemption on the condition of sharing more than 50 per cent in the cost of railway projects. The Chief Minister said that at present there are Naini Saini, Gauchar, and Chinyalisaur airstrips in the state. There is a need to expand them and build other heliports from a strategic point of view. The establishment of a new airport in the Chaukhutia area, located between the Kumaon and Garhwal region and near the summer capital of the state, is very important from the economic and strategic point of view.
The Chief Minister said that keeping in view the vulnerability of Uttarakhand to disaster, the state needed a strong weather forecasting system and infrastructure with Doppler radar. The Chief Minister requested the speedy approval of the proposed work under the Bharat Net-2 project for providing connectivity in 5942-gram panchayats without mobile and internet connectivity in Uttarakhand under the Bharat Net-2 project.
Chief Minister requested to reduce the amount of 10 per cent to be kept in the account of the National Authority under CAMPA to 2 per cent. He said that this remaining 8 per cent amount could be used for the implementation of public interest and welfare schemes related to the conservation and promotion of forest and wildlife under the activities permitted in CAMPA in view of the extreme geographical conditions of the state.
The Chief Minister said that Him Prahari Yojana is proposed to be implemented in the snow-covered areas of the marginal districts of the State. Information, relief and rescue work, border security training, awareness, and self-defence training will be done by the Him Prahari team at the time of divine calamities. He requested the Government of India for financial assistance for this.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bhopal (The Hawk): A man who works as a bouncer at a beer bar here barged into a finance company's office on Friday and terrorised those present with a knife, claiming to have committed up to seven murders.&nbsp;
The incident occurred close to the Habibganj railway station. About 30 people were held hostage for about an hour before police arrived and arrested the bouncer.&nbsp;
Subham Thakur, alias Badshah, has been identified as the suspect. According to the police, the owner of the finance firm had rented the building and was in the process of relocating his office. Thakur barged in wielding a knife while the entire firm was busy shifting.&nbsp;
"You don't know who I am; my name is Badshah Thakur. I've killed seven people. I will not allow anyone to leave this office "Thakur could be heard saying in a viral social media video.&nbsp;
Makrand Deoskar, Commissioner of Police, stated that "The owner of the company and the landlord had a rent disagreement. The landlord, who also owns a beer bar in the same neighbourhood, dispatched his bouncer to terrorise the office staff. The bouncer and his employer will face severe consequences." The incident caused no injuries.&nbsp;
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Chief Minister, also took notice of the situation and directed the police to take strict action against the accused.&nbsp;
Later, another video surfaced showing the bouncer apologising at the police station.&nbsp;
"Sorry, I made a big mistake that I will not repeat in the future. Please forgive me, "Thakur was heard saying.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jaipur (The Hawk): A man has been charged with assaulting his wife after she refused to participate in a wife-swapping scheme in Bikaner, along with his mother and sister.
The victim woman said in her FIR that her husband put pressure on her to exchange wives and engage in physical contact with his pals. When she objected, he beat her and sexually assaulted her, compelling her to engage in unnatural intercourse.
The woman is a Bhopal inhabitant.
She has a husband who works as a hotel manager in Bikaner. His name is Mohammad Ammar. At a Bhopal police station, a case has been opened against him.
When the woman declined Ammar's marriage proposal, she said that she was labelled "dumb" and "uncultured." The wife claimed that her husband was an alcoholic and drug addict who had sex with both girls and boys.
According to the Bhopal police, the woman moved in with her parents two months ago. At the moment, her mother was on the road. The woman described her ordeal when she came back. Then, her mother prompted her to report a crime to the police.
Ammar has been evading authorities ever since the complaint was filed.
In addition, the woman claimed that her mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and husband had all sought a dowry of Rs. 50 lakh. She claimed that despite her repeated requests to "become modern," her in-laws never listened to her objections.
The woman also claimed that the assaults, which persisted for months, caused her health to decline.

New Delhi (The Hawk): CSIR- Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI) has converted red mud into X-ray shielding tiles in a green and economically viable manner through a ceramic route by adding a certain weight percentage of high Z material and binder with it. The 12 mm thick tiles possess an attenuation equal to 2.1 mm lead at 100 kV. Moreover, the developed tile has a flexural strength of 34 N/mm2 and a breaking strength of 3369 N. These tiles can be used to build radiation shielding structures in diagnostic X-rays, CT scanner rooms, Cath labs, bone mineral density, dental X-rays, etc., instead of the toxic lead sheet to protect the public from radiation hazards.

The know-how for the fabrication of “Lead-Free X-ray Shielding Tiles” was transferred to M/S Prism Johnson Ltd., on 10/06/2019 at CSIR, New Delhi. CSIR-AMPRI and M/s Prism Johnson Ltd., have worked together and upscale this technology from the lab to the industry level, and joint-free X-ray shielding tiles (30x30x1.2 cm3) were made on a pilot scale on 14/04/2022. The developed tiles are tested and approved by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) of India. The product is commercialized and the first instalment has been initiated at INS Kattabomman, Tamilnadu.
Red Mud is the waste generated in the Bayer process of alumina production from bauxite. It is also known as bauxite residue. Red Mud is defined as a “High Volume Low Effect Waste”. Nearly 1 to 1.5 tonnes of RM is being generated while producing one tonne of alumina from the bauxite ore through the Bayer process. It is considered to be toxic due to its extreme alkalinity and heavy element leaching. Annually about 175 million tonnes of red mud have been generated globally and stored in a specially designed clay-lined pond. Among that India is producing nearly 9 million tonnes of red mud every year. The clay-lined ponds often broke out and pollute soil, groundwater, and air and become fatal for both humans and wildlife.
Red mud is one of the underutilized industrial wastes and getting accumulated over the years due to an increase in alumina production as well as inadequate technologies for its large-scale utilization. Although the scientific community has patented more than 700 applications of red mud, very few of them have reached industries due to high cost, low public acceptance, environmental issues, and limited market. Noteworthy, only 3-4% of red mud has been utilized by the industries to produce cement, bricks, source of iron ore etc., (i.e. 1-1.5 million tonnes (Mt) for cement production, 0.2–1.2 Mt for iron production and 0.5 -1.0 Mtfor building materials and 0.3 Mt for making pigments, catalyst, ceramics, etc.).The beneficial utilization of red mud is becoming a global issue. The red mud contains 30 – 55% of Fe2O3, which is suitable for attenuating high-energy ionizing radiations like X- and gamma rays.

CSIR- Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI) has converted red mud into X-ray shielding tiles in a green and economically viable manner through a ceramic route by adding a certain weight percentage of high Z material and binder with it.

Bhopal (The Hawk): Following the renaming of Bhopal's Habibganj railway station as Rani Kamlapati by the Madhya Pradesh government a year ago, the procedure to rename other areas of the city has started.
At least three areas, including the hilly Lalghati neighbourhood where Bhopal's main jail is situated, will have new names.
The Halalpur bus stop and Halalpur colony are two other locations of the capital city that would experience the same procedure. The Bhopal Municipal Corporation has unanimously adopted a proposal in this respect (BMC).
Notably, the idea was presented to the BMC standing committee at a meeting on Friday by Bhopal MP Pragya Thakur.
According to the plan, Halalpur village and Halalpur bus stop should both be referred to as Hanumangarhi, while Lalghati should be renamed after Narayan Das, a Hindu holy priest and former director of Gufa Mandir in Bhopal. "Beautiful Bhopal is a city of lakes with a clean, natural environment. It is up to us to keep it secure "After the BMC approved her request, Thakur stated.
The newly renovated Habibganj railway station was renamed "Rani Kamlapati" by the state government last year in honour of the Gond Queen. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bhopal in November 2021 to attend the massive "Janjatiya Divas," it was renamed in his presence.
Hoshangabad district's name was also changed to Narmadapuram by the BJP-led Shivraj Singh Chouhan administration last year.
Speaking before a crowd in Hoshangabad at the time, Chouhan declared that the district had been renamed Narmadapuram because it is situated on the bank of the Narmada River.
The BJP and right-wing organisations have spoken out on various occasions in favour of changing the name of Bhopal. They have insisted that Bhopal be given the name of Raja Bhojpal, the city's founder monarch.

Therefore, in my opinion, the Bhopal Gas Tragedy should be considered in medical research in order to aid the medical community in preparing for future disasters of this nature "Pathak declared.He added that victims of the toxic gas leak incident frequently complained of lung and respiratory problems as well as other related ailments. "When the city's air quality declines in the winter, issues like inflammation and hypertension get worse. MP finally gets its first hospital for respiratory illnesses after 38 years of waiting

New Delhi: The Bhopal Gas Tragedy took place in Madhya Pradesh's capital on December 2-3 night in 1984. Exactly 38 years ago, a poisonous gas, methyl isocyanate leaked from the factory of Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL), which resulted in more than 3,000 deaths, as per government figures.Those who survived suffered terribly with issues ranging from physical disability to blindness.The CEO of the Union Carbide Corporation, Warren Anderson, who was the main accused in the horrific incident managed to flee the country after arriving here and could never be brought back.The demand to hold Anderson accountable echoed all over the country after the tragedy but the accused was able to leave India easily.Questions regarding his escape remain unanswered to this day.# Then PM and CM accused of helping Anderson in fleeingIt was alleged that the then MP Chief Minister, Arjun Singh ordered Anderson's release from custody at the behest of then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.Although the allegations were not taken up in court, sections of the chargesheet filed were enough to show that the government's approach was insensitive even after thousands of deaths.It was also said that Gandhi was pressured by high US officials to release Anderson.Moti Singh, Collector at the time of the tragedy, in his book 'Unfolding the Betrayal of Bhopal Gas Tragedy' exposed the truth behind Anderson's release on bail.Mentioning the entire incident, Singh wrote that Anderson was released on the orders of Arjun Singh. He was released on bail despite the first FIR that was registered under non-bailable sections.# Timeline of Anderson's escapeThere was a huge public outcry against the Union Carbide Company and Warren Anderson after the incident.A case was registered in Bhopal's Hanuman Ganj police station on December 3 evening.According to information, Anderson along with some of his colleagues reached Bhopal on December 7 at 9.30 a.m. by an Indian Airlines flight. The then SP Swaraj Puri and DM Moti Singh received him at the airport, following which he was taken to UCIL's rest house where he was apprised that he was being taken into custody.It is said that very afternoon, Arjun Singh ordered his immediate release.After this, at 3.30 p.m., Puri dropped Anderson to the State Hanger, from where he flew to the US via Delhi.Singh later said that he was asked by the Union Home Ministry to release Anderson.# Anderson's obscure death in 2014According to information, on February 9, 1989, the CJM court issued a non-bailable warrant against Anderson. He was declared a fugitive on February 1, 1992.Several NGOs fought for compensation and for Anderson to be brought back from the US.Anderson died on September 29, 2014, at a nursing home in Florida, USA, which was revealed a month later.# Mystery of Anderson's escape remains despite inquiry commission's formationA one-person Justice S.L. Kochhar commission was set up in 2010 to investigate Anderson's release and the provision of a special flight to Delhi.SP Swaraj Puri had said before the commission that there was a written order for Anderson's arrest, but the order for his release was verbal. He said that the order was received over the wireless set.The details and facts pertaining to Anderson's escape got recorded in statements and courts but never got close to justice for the victims.No proper effort was ever made to arrest Anderson and bring him back to India.The ones responsible within India were let off easily.In 2010, the court sentenced the factory workers to only two years for their role in the tragedy and deaths.&nbsp;—IANS

Bhopal News: At least eight persons, including two women, died after they fell into a deep stepwell at the Baleshwar Mahadev temple in Madhya Pradesh's Indore during Ram Navami prayers on Thursday, officials said.

The incident occurred after the roof over the the stepwell, said to be at least 50-60 feet deep and full with water, collapsed as more than 25 people were on it.

As per officials, 17 people were rescued and all have been rushed to the hospital for treatment. Rescue operation for remaining others were still underway.

"Four bodies have been recovered so far. There are still some people stuck in the stepwell and rescue operation is underway," Indore Police Commissioner Makarand Deuskar told media persons.

Official sources told IANS that the number of deaths may go up but would be known after rescue operations conclude.

The space where the well is located is narrow, and therefore, hindrance was being faced during the rescue operation, said the officials.

People, who were stuck in the well, were being pulled out with the help of ropes.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he was in touch with Indore district administration.

The incident occurred when scores of people were gathered at the temple to offer their prayers on the occasion of Ram Navami. While some devotees were performing 'havan', many were standing in a queue. IANS

Mumbai: Renowned industrialist Keshub Mahindra, the Chairman Emeritus of the industrial conglomerate Mahindra Group, passed away here on Wednesday morning, an official said.

He was 99 and breathed his last peacefully at his home. He is survived by nephew and industrialist Anand Mahindra and other relatives.

A well-known philanthropist, Mahindra had served as the non-executive Chairman of the Union Carbide India Ltd. when the massive Bhopal gas leak had occurred in December 1984.

Ranked as the world's worst industrial disaster, Mahindra and others were later convicted by a court for two years' jail term in 2010, and later enlarged on bail.

Born on October 9, 1923 in Shimla, Mahindra pursued his higher education in the Wharton School of University of Pennsylvania.

Subsequently, he joined the Mahindra &amp; Mahindra Group in 1947, and rose up to become its Chairman in 1963.

Over the years, the Mahindra Group became a leading conglomerate with interests comprising automobiles, starting with its popular Willys jeeps that ruled the roads once, engineering, farm equipment, education, aerospace, IT, housing, realty, finances, etc.

Keshub Mahindra worked on various high-level government committees and panels with various governments, and was on the PM's Council on Trade and Industry from 2004-2010.

He was decorated with several national and international honours, served with several industry organisations and associations like ASSOCHAM, HUDCO, and also on the boards of top companies like Tatas, SAIL, IFC, ICICI, HDFC, EFI, AIMA, Bombay Dyeing, Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation, et al. IANS
