Chandigarh: Carrying swords and arms, supporters of Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh, chief of the 'Waris Punjab De' group, on Thursday clashed with the police and forcefully entered a police complex in Punjab's Amritsar district in protest against the arrest of their activist.
Six policemen were injured amid the protests and were admitted to a hospital. The supporters were staging a demonstration in Ajnala town against the arrest of Amritpal Singh's aide Lovepreet Toofan. A case was registered against Amritpal Singh and his supporters for allegedly kidnapping and thrashing a resident of Chamkaur Sahib in Ropar district.
Videos and photos shared on social media showed crowd of protesters outside the police station, while the cops tried to control the crowd. "The FIR was registered only with a political motive. If they don't cancel the case in one hour, the administration will be responsible for whatever happens next," Amritpal Singh, who had recently reportedly issued a threat to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying he will meet the same fate as that of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The Waris Punjab De is an organisation of radicals founded by activist Deep Sidhu, who died in a road accident in February last year.

To diffuse the tension, Police Commissioner Jaskaran Singh had told the media they have given enough proof that Lovepreet Toofan is innocent. Amritsar: Amritpal Singh, who is considered to be a radical preacher and sympathizer of Khalistan separatist Jarnail Singh Bhind-ranwale, on Saturday said that calling him a "terrorist is terrorism" itself and said that he works for the people of Punjab and has an influence on the youth "not for wrong, but for right reasons".
Amritpal, who is also the chief of 'Waris Punjab De' organisation, whose supporters allegedly clashed with the Ajnala Police on February 23, said that he has many "political enemies".
In an exclusive interview with ANI, he said that he is against the bigger industries alleging that they are destroying the economy across the country. "I am fighting against bigger industries. The bigger industries are coming to Punjab and destroying the economy not just in Punjab but in every state. They are destroying the local businesses. Privatization is at its peak right now. When I speak against capitalism, these people are my enemies. They own the media houses. They call Amritpal a terrorist. Calling me a terrorist is terrorism, when a person fights against terrorism and has an influence on youth, not for any wrong reasons, but for right reasons," he said. He said that it is very relevant to talk about Kartar Singh Bhindranwale today and said that Punjab is a peaceful state. "It is very relevant to talk about Sant Kartar Singh Bhindranwale today. They are alleging that I took shelter of Guru Granth Sahib. Indira Gandhi (former Prime Minister) imposed Emergency. Section 144 was imposed everywhere. So Sant Kartar Singh Bhindranwale went out and did nagar kirtans, called them juloos. They were walking with Guru Granth Sahib ji. Somebody can say that you are using Guru Granth Sahib against Emergency. But Guru Granth Sahib is our living Guru and we are in its shelter all the time. You can see in the video, the Sangat was in front of the Guru Granth Sahib. When the police started lathi-charge, I got out of my car and went in the front. What happened yesterday is now over. Punjab is not disturbed, but a peaceful state," he said while describing the Ajnala clashes with the police. Amritpal claimed that he fights against drugs and helps youth overcome its addiction.
"Even before yesterday, we were doing 'dharm prachar' and fighting against drugs. We were running many centres in Punjab where youth come and leave drugs. We give them medical facilities. We are providing them with urgent medical attention. We are also trying to resolve the local issues of Punjab which are not able to be solved at the police stations," he said.
Dubbing the FIR against his associate Lovepreet Singh Toofan as the reason for the large protests in which thousands of his supporters demonstrated holding swords and guns in their hands on February 23, Amritpal said that the police should not have arrested Toofan if there was no evidence against him. Toofan was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and thrashing a man.
"Why did this thing lead to such protests? If the FIR didn't have any evidence, they should not have arrested Toofan Singh. Hundreds of police personnel went to his house like he was a terrorist and did not let him wear his turban properly. When we got the news that he was arrested, we contacted them. I told them that they cannot arrest somebody on the basis of the complaint by someone who is not mentally stable," he claimed.
Stating that he enjoys the support of a large number of people, Amritpal said that he is doing the things which Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann should do.
"I have many political enemies. I have a huge number of supporters. Anybody can falsely accuse me of something. The police should not move without an FIR. What the Chief Minister should do, I am doing. It is his state, he should be doing the things. Instead of saying what Amritpal is doing, he should be doing the things. When he said he needs 24 hours to do justice in the sacrilege case, many months passed. Sidhu Moose Wala got killed," he said.
"The people here are peaceful and will remain so until they are harmed and provoked and made to go through injustice," the 'Waris Punjab De' chief added.
He called the violence during the protests in which several police personnel were injured a failure of the system.
"I went to the police station way before the palki came there. It's the system's failure. I will not say it is the failure of the police," he said.
Amritpal further said that the idea of sacredness is different for Sikhs than Hindus and Muslims and stressed that people should not define "sacredness of each other". "The idea of sacredness is very different from that of the Hindus and Muslims. What is sacred for us might not be sacred for Hindus. That does not mean they will define our sacredness. That is happening since 1947. They say you go to the Golden temple with weapons. It's propagated like it has been made impure. But I am asking them, what if I am making it more sacred by bringing weapons there? My Guru asked me whenever you come, make sure to get more weapons on you and come to Gurudwara. That's our sacredness. It's like a Hindu going to the temple and putting 'tilak' on his forehead. Let's not define the sacredness of each other," he said.
Thousands of supporters of 'Waris Punjab De' Chief Amritpal Singh on February 23 staged a massive demonstration in Amritsar to protest against the arrest of Singh's close aide Lovepreet Toofan. The Punjab Police decided to release Toofan that evening after "evidence" was presented before them.
"They have given enough proof that he (detained Lovepreet Toofan) is innocent. SIT has taken cognizance of it. These people will peacefully disperse now and the law will take its own course," the SSP had said.
Notbly, Amritpal's supporters had threatened to disturb law and order in Toofan was not released within 24 hours.

Chandigarh: Mobile Internet services have been suspended in several districts of Punjab until 12 noon on Sunday, State police said today after launching an operation to arrest chief of suspected pro-Khalistan outfit 'Waris Punjab De', Amritpal Singh and his aides.
"All mobile internet services, all SMS services (except banking &amp; mobile recharge) and all dongle services provided on mobile networks, except the voice call, in the territorial jurisdiction of Punjab shall be suspended from March 18, (12:00 hours) to March 19, (12:00 hours) in the interest of public safety," Punjab's department of Home Affairs and Justice said.
The police action came almost over three weeks after Amritpal's supporters clashed with police personnel at the Ajnala police station on the outskirts of Amritsar last month, demanding the release of one of Amritpal's close aide- Lovepreet Toofan.
On February 23, thousands of his supporters, stormed the Ajnala police station, flashing swords and high-calibre firearms, threatening the police with dire consequences if they did not release Lovepreet Toofan, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting and abducting a man.
The supporters, brandishing swords and guns broke through police barricades erected outside the Ajnala police station.
The police later said "in the light of the evidence presented", it has been decided that Lovepreet Singh Toofan will be discharged. Lovepreet Singh was released from jail on February 24 following orders of a court in Ajnala on an application by the police.
Reacting to the incident, chief minister Bhagwant Mann said that these "1000 people" don't represent Punjab, and alleged that they are "funded by Pakistan" to disrupt peace in the state.&nbsp;

Guwahati: Due to security reasons, four aides of absconding Sikh radical preacher Amritpal Singh were brought to Assam's Dibrugarh district on Sunday, according to police sources.  They have been kept at the Dibrugarh Central Jail. An SP-rank officer of the Punjab Police, Superintendent of Police Tejbir Singh Hundal, led the team to shift the four arrested to Assam.  However, neither the Punjab Police team nor any officer from the Assam Police confirmed this.  Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police Shwetank Misra said, "Four arrested persons have been brought here. We will divulge further details later."  The identities of the four people are still unknown.  Meanwhile, outside the Dibrugarh central jail, security has been beefed up. A police source said that the four arrested persons might undergo a marathon interrogation by a joint team of Punjab and Assam Police later in the evening. IANS

With a manhunt underway for radical Sikh preacher and Khalistan sympathiser Amritpal Singh in Punjab, Haryana has intensified checking of vehicles along the border with the neighbouring state.

Punjab Police on Saturday launched a major crackdown against Amritpal and suspended internet and SMS services till Monday noon. It has arrested 78 members of 'Punjab Waris De', an outfit headed by him.

At the Shambhu border with Punjab, Ambala police have been put on high alert, officials said on Sunday.

Additional checkpoints have been set up and a large number of police personnel have been deployed there, they said.

In some other districts too, including Kurukshetra, Kaithal and Sirsa, which share borders with Punjab, police are maintaining strict vigil and have intensified checking of vehicles, they said.

CIA-1 incharge of Ambala police Harjinder Singh, who was present at the Haryana-Punjab border near Shambhu, said the situation is normal and peaceful but police are maintaining a vigil.

In Punjab, security forces conducted flag marches at several places in the state, including Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana.

Dubai-returned Amritpal was last year anointed the head of 'Waris Punjab De', which was founded by actor and activist Deep Sidhu who died in a road accident in February last year.

Last month, Amritpal and his supporters, some of them brandishing swords and guns, broke through barricades and barged into Ajnala police station on the outskirts of Amritsar city, and clashed with police for the release of one of his aides. Six policemen were injured in the incident.

Punjab Police filed an FIR on February 23 in connection with the incident.

Guwahati: Four aides of absconding Sikh radical preacher Amritpal Singh have been brought to Assam's Dibrugarh district on Sunday, according to police sources.
A top police source said, "Four detained associates of Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh were recently flown to Dibrugarh by a Special Air Force aircraft. They will probably be kept in the Dibrugarh Central Jail.
"They are being accompanied by a 27-member Punjab Police team, including the IG Jail," the source added.
They were received at Mohanbari Airport by the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Dibrugarh under tight security.
The reason behind Amritpal Singh's aides' transit to Assam is still unknown. The police are not willing to divulge any details as of now.
When IANS contacted Prasanata Kumar Bhuyan, Inspector General of Police (IGP) and spokesperson of Assam Police, he claimed that he was unaware of any such developments.&nbsp;

Chandigarh: Absconding self-styled radical Sikh preacher and head of 'Waris Punjab De' Amritpal Singh's uncle Harjit Singh and one more person have been arrested in Punjab's Shahkot area, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Swapan Sharma said on Monday.

The Punjab Police continued its crackdown on "fugitive" Amritpal Singh on the third day on Monday.

The police have seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Amritpal's aides. A fresh FIR was registered against him and his associates in an illegal weapons case.

The police made preventive arrests of persons attempting to disturb peace and law and order in the state.

Daljeet Singh Kalsi, who handled the Khalistani ideologue's finance, was arrested from Gurugram.

Seven of Amritpal's associates, who were arrested for taking siege of a police station in Amritsar's Ajnala area last month, have been sent to police custody till March 23 by a court in Beas.

Four aides of the absconding radical leader were taken to Dibrugarh in Assam for security reasons.

An official spokesperson for the Punjab Police said Amritpal Singh remains a fugitive and efforts are on to arrest him.

Flag marches have been conducted by district police and paramilitary forces led by Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) all over the state, he said, adding that peace committee meetings have also been held in all the districts and there is complete peace and harmony in the state at present.

During the ongoing operations against the 'Waris Punjab De' elements and persons attempting to disturb peace and harmony in the state, another 34 arrests were made from across Punjab on Sunday, taking the total number of people arrested in this connection since Saturday to 112.

The spokesperson said that during the ongoing search operations, an abandoned ISUZU vehicle has been recovered from Salina village in Jalandhar district.

The vehicle was used by Amritpal while the police were chasing him on Saturday. A .315 bore rifle along with 57 cartridges, a sword and a wireless set have been recovered from the abandoned vehicle, he said, adding that the vehicle is owned by Manpreet Singh from Anokharwal village in SBS Nagar, who has been arrested.

The spokesperson added that strict action as per the law will be taken if anyone is found spreading fake news, rumours or hate speech.

All citizens, mediapersons and social media platform intermediaries are requested to act in a responsible manner and to fact-check the authenticity of the content being shared by them on various social media, electronic media and print media platforms, he added.

All mischievous elements attempting to disrupt peace and harmony in the state shall be dealt with strictly, the spokesperson added.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Sunday issued notice to the Punjab government on a habeas corpus petition seeking issuance of directions to the Jalandhar Commissioner of Police and other officials to present alleged "detainee" Amritpal Singh "in the interest of justice".

Justice N.S. Shekhawat fixed the case for further hearing on Tuesday.

Petitioner Imaan Singh Khara alleged that 'Waris Punjab De' chief Amritpal Singh had been illegally and forcibly detained by the police commissioner and other officials without any authority of law.

Directions were also sought for the appointment of a warrant officer to visit the "spot".

Chandigarh: Khalistan ideologue and 'Waris Punjab De' chief Amrit-pal Singh is still absconding while so far 114 people have been arrested in connection with the March 18 crackdown, Punjab Police's Inspector General Sukhchain Singh Gill said here on Monday.
In a major development, the National Security Act (NSA) has been imposed on four aides of Amritpal Singh. Amritpal Singh's uncle Harjit Singh, who was arrested on early Monday, is also likely to be booked under the stringent law.
While the four aides of Amritpal Singh -- Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh, and Pradhanmantri Bajeka -- have been kept in Assam's Dibrugarh jail, his uncle is also being taken there.
Addressing the media, Gill clarified that Amritpal Singh continued to be absconding and a manhunt was on to arrest him at the earliest. He, however, did not rule out imposing the NSA on Amritpal Singh, against whom the police slapped six cases. A total of 10 weapons and four vehicles, including the radical leader's Mercedes, had been seized. Punjab Police suspect the involvement of the ISI and foreign funding for the 'Waris Punjab De', which is being investigated.
"We have strong suspicion of involvement of Pakistan's ISI besides foreign funding. The accused were using hawala channels also. We have evidence that the accused were forming 'Anandpur Khalsa Fauj' (AKF) of close associates of Amritpal," the IG said. The six FIRs lodged against Amritpal Singh and his associates include causing disharmony and obstruction in police working and attack on police, besides possessing illegal weapons. The police have also found a walkie-talkie set from one of the vehicles used by Amritpal Singh, the IG said. Besides, bulletproof jackets and rifles that have been recovered. The gate of the house of Amritpal Singh had AKF inscribed on them. Gill clarified that there was total normalcy in Punjab and the cordon and search operation is underway.

Dehradun: Amid the ongoing crackdown against 'Waris Punjab De' chief Amritpal Singh carried out by the Punjab Police, the police in the nearby state of Uttarakhand has also registered a case in Mandhi Chowki police station of Udham Singh Nagar district for sharing a post in support of Amritpal Singh, said the police.
According to the police, the accused has been identified as Gurvinder Singh Bains, a resident of village Daduwala in Kashipur.
"Accused Gurvinder Singh Bains has shared a post on social media supporting the absconding pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh", the police added. Earlier, the Uttarakhand Police Headquarters told ANI that the state police is on full alert mode regarding the absconding pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh from Punjab.
According to the police headquarters, a strict vigil is being kept by the police and intelligence department in the Udham Singh Nagar district of the state. The police headquarters told that close monitoring is being done to see if anyone is supporting Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh or is putting any posts on social media in support of him.
Amid the crackdown, which started on Saturday, the suspension of the internet, SMS and dongle services was also extended till Tuesday noon. Earlier on Monday, Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sukhchain Singh Gill said in a press conference, that there is huge suspicion of ISI angle and foreign funding in the case.
He also said that a total of 114 people have been arrested so far since the crackdown has launched.
Earlier, the Punjab Police informed that the uncle and driver of Amritpal Singh have surrendered before the police, and his uncle is en-route to Dibrugarh. Previously, four close aides of the pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh were detained and flown to Assam's Dibrugarh.
Previously the central agency sources informed that Daljeet Singh Kalsi alias Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi, who is an alleged advisor and financer of Amritpal Singh, was arrested by the authorities on Sunday.
The vehicle used by 'Waris Punjab De' chief Amritpal Singh for his escape was also seized by Punjab Police, along with several other vehicles and ammunition. Meanwhile, a heavy police force has been deployed outside Amritpal Singh's residence in Jallupur Khera village in Amritsar. Security has also been enhanced across the state, as per the police.
The police also conducted flag marches in various parts of the state to maintain law and order and instil confidence among people.
Jalandhar Commissioner Kuldeep Singh Chahal, on Saturday late evening, confirmed that the radical leader had been declared a "fugitive".The police crackdown came almost over three weeks after Amritpal's supporters clashed with uniformed personnel at the Ajnala police station on February 23 on the outskirts of Amritsar, demanding the release of one of Amritpal's close aides, Lovepreet Toofan.
Thousands of his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station, flashing swords and high-calibre firearms and threatening the police with dire consequences if they did not release Lovepreet Toofan, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting and abducting a man. —ANI

Amid the ongoing crackdown against 'Waris Punjab De' chief Amritpal Singh carried out by the Punjab Police, the police in the nearby state of Uttarakhand has also registered a case in Mandhi Chowki police station of Udham Singh Nagar district for sharing a post in support of Amritpal Singh, said the police.

New Delhi: As Amritpal Singh, the self-styled Sikh preacher and head of 'Waris Punjab De', continues to evade police, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) may take over the case on Tuesday, sources said.
A team of NIA has reached Punjab and is speaking to the senior officials of Punjab Police.
There are now high possibilities that the NIA may take over the case on Tuesday. The sources said that the NIA is seeking details and documents related to the case. As of now, multiple agencies are looking into the matter. "There are possibilities that we might take over the matter. There is a terror link connected to Pakistan's ISI and therefore the Ministry of Home Affairs can decide to transfer the case," the sources added. Amritpal is currently on the run and it is said that he might have fled abroad. Tuesday is the fourth day when the agencies are conducting raids to nab him but there are no trace of him. Kin of Amritpal have also moved habeas corpus plea before the Haryana and Punjab High Court. His family has alleged that he is in custody of Punjab Police and he could be killed in encounter. As of now, the NIA has not spoken on the matter.

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday asked the state government that "how is everyone arrested, except Amritpal Singh", adding that "if he has he escaped, this is an intelligence failure".
The High Court continued hearing a habeas corpus petition filed by the legal advisor of Waris Punjab De, requesting the court to direct the respondents to produce the fugitive self-styled Sikh preacher before it.
A bench of Justice N.S. Shekhawat asked Advocate General Vinod Ghai: "How did he (Amritpal Singh) escape?" At this, he replied: "We have arrested other accused in the case."
The bench further asked how everyone, except Amritpal Singh, has been arrested. "You have 80,000 police. How has he not been arrested? If he escaped, this is an intelligence failure. The entire police force is after him," said the bench. Explaining further, the Advocate General said: "It happens sometimes. The G20 summit was also going on."
The High Court appointed advocate Tanu Bedi as amicus curiae in the case and adjourned the hearing for four days.
It has also sought a status report sought from Punjab. The Advocate General further informed the court that the stringent NSA has been invoked against Amritpal Singh.
"Amritpal Singh is absconding from the law. Raids have been conducted to apprehend and detain Amritpal Singh but he could not be detained so far and is absconding and concealing himself so the order cannot be executed to arrest and detain Amritpal Singh as per the orders of District Magistrate Amritsar issued under section 3(2) of the National Security Act, 1980. "In this regard District Magistrate Amritsar has sent a report vide number Reader/DM/1/696 dated 20.03.2023 to the Judicial Magistrate first Class Baba Bakala, Amritsar, Punjab under section 7 (1) (a) of the said act", said Kuldeep Chahal, Jalandhar Police Commissioner, in his reply.

Chandigarh: On Wednesday, officials revealed that 38-year-old Papalpreet Singh was the brains behind pro-Khalistan fugitive Amritpal Singh's escape from the police dragnet. Papalpreet Singh was in constant contact with Pakistan's ISI and was following orders from it.
They said that Papalpreet Singh is one of Amritpal Singh's mentors and that he has been giving him advice on different issues. Since Amritpal's return to India last year, the two had been working closely together at the nonprofit organisation 'Waris Punjab De,' which was formed by the late actor Deep Sidhu before his tragic death in a road accident in 2021.

Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough in the ongoing manhunt for fugitive pro-Khalistan leader and radical preacher Amritpal Singh, Punjab's Inspector General of Police (IGP), Headquarters, Sukhchain Singh Gill, on Thursday revealed that the Waris Punjab De chief's last location was in Haryana.
Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh on Thursday, the IGP said, "We are still actively searching for Amritpal Singh and have come to know that its last location was in Haryana. We have taken a woman named Baljeet Kaur into custody. Amritpal stayed at this woman's house in Kurukshetra (Haryana) and the Waris Punjab De chief and his close aide had been in touch with her for the last two-and-a-half years."
The IGP said Baljeet Kaur disclosed during questioning that both Amritpal and his key aide, Papalpreet Singh, had stayed at her house on the night of March 19.
"We arrested Baljeet Kaur with the help of Haryana Police. She disclosed during interrogation that on the night of March 19, both Papalpreet Singh and Amritpal had put up at her place. She said she had Papalpreet for more than the last couple of years and he had stayed at her house on several occasions," the IGP said.
"After staying the night, they moved out of there (her house) the next day. We are examining the CCTV footage and are hopeful of arresting Amritpal soon," he added.
The Punjab IGP informed further that Amritpal and his aide changed their two-wheeler near a gurdwara at Sehowal village in Jalandhar and tried to get a boat to get across a river.
"Our team continues to be in his trail. We are examining CCTV footage retrieved from several locations in a bid to trace his whereabouts. They changed their two-wheeler at a gurdwara at Sehowal village and tried to get a boat to cross the river. However, they failed to get one and eventually used an overbridge to get across the river," the IGP added.
"After roaming around in another two-wheeler, they hired an auto-rickshaw. After this, they were located at Kurukshetra. Gurpej (one of the four men arrested for allegedly helping Amritpal escape), who is currently in our custody, told us about another woman, apart from Baljeet Kaur, who he may turn to for refuge," the IGP added.
Gill said as many as 207 persons have been detained and of them, 30 have been arrested in different cases. They were involved in criminal cases, the IGP informed.
"We've detained 207 people so far. Of them, 30 have been arrested in different cases. They were found involved in criminal cases. Another 177 persons have been placed under preventive detention in the interest of maintaining peace, as well as law and order," said Gill.
Earlier in the day, Punjab police arrested an associate of the fugitive Waris Punjab De chief. Police identified the arrested person as Tejinder Singh aka Gorkha Baba, a resident of Punjab's Mangewal village.
"He often lived with Amritpal and was involved in the Ajnala violence as well. Gorkha Baba used to be Amritpal's gunman for a long time. Tejinder was also active on social media. Pictures of him holding weapons would often surface on social media. A separate case was registered against Tejinder in Malaud police station after the pictures surfaced," DSP Payal Harsimrat Singh told ANI.
The police informed that action has been taken against him under sections 107 and 151 of the Indian Penal Code (IPS).
"Two other people accompanying Tejinder were detained and are being interrogated," added the DSP.
The DSP informed further that Tejinder was named in an assault case and another case of liquor smuggling was also registered against him. Tejinder had served a sentence in the latter case.
On March 18, Punjab Police launched an operation against Amritpal and his aides. Dehradun: An alert has been issued in Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udhamsinghnagar districts of the Uttarakhand as a precaution in view of the possibility of pro-Khalisthan Amritpal Singh entering the state, the state's Director General of Police Ashok Kumar has said.
"An alert has been issued in Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udhamsinghnagar districts of the state as a precaution in view of the possibility of pro-Khalisthan Amritpal Singh entering the state," the DGP told ANI.
He said that the police conducting intensive checking on the borders of all three districts and in other areas.
Significantly, all three districts of the State have been affected by terrorism in the 90s, he added.
On Thursday, Punjab's Inspector General of Police (IGP), Headquarters, Sukhchain Singh Gill said that a total of 207 persons have been arrested for disturbing peace and harmony in the state, of which, 30 have been found in substantive criminal activities, while, remaining are under preventive arrest.
"Police teams are doing a thorough screening of all the arrested persons and soon they will be released from police custody," he said.
The IGP said that this operation was carried out on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann with an aim to save the innocent youth of Punjab from playing into the hands of Anti-National Forces.
"Punjab Police have clear instructions from the Chief Minister not to harass any innocent person during the ongoing operation. Police teams have even not harassed the family members of Amritpal Singh," he said.
Divulging more details, IGP Gill said that the Punjab Police in a joint operation with Haryana Police have arrested a woman identified as Baljeet Kaur for harbouring Amritpal Singh and his aide Pappalpreet Singh at her home in Kurukshetra, Haryana on March 19. Accused Baljit Kaur revealed that Pappalpreet was in touch with her for the last two and a half years," he said.

An FIR on March 22 has been registered under sections 188 and 336 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 27 of the Arms Act at Police Station Malaud in Khanna," the IGP said. —ANI

Bahraich: The Sashastra Seema Bal has issued an alert and put up posters bearing pictures of Amritpal Singh and his aides along the border with Nepal to avert the possibility of the radical preacher fleeing the country via Uttar Pradesh.
The Punjab Police launched a crackdown against Amritpal and elements of his “Waris Punjab De” outfit last week.
Amritpal, however, gave the police a slip and escaped their dragnet when his cavalcade was intercepted in the Jalandhar district. Following his escape, Amritpal changed his appearance, wore sunglasses and western attire and has been using different modes of travel.
“Based on inputs from intelligence agencies that Amritpal can enter Nepal, we have issued an alert on the border. Posters with their pictures have also been put up on the border in Rupaidiha. We are closely monitoring the movement of people along the border,” Tapan Das, commandant of the Sashastra Seema Bal’s (SSB) 42nd Battalion, said on Friday.
High resolution pictures of Amritpal and his aides have also been uploaded on the mobile phones of SSB personnel and in the facial recognition software used on the border, he said. Even though Punjab is far from Rupaidiha, the presence of a considerable Sikh population gives Amritapl the opportunity to hide there and enter Nepal, officials said. Earlier in the day, the Haryana Police said it has stepped up vigil across the state and its personnel have been put on alert after Amritpal’s last location was traced in the Kurukshetra district. —PTI
