Amaravati: The race for Rajya Sabha seats in the biennial election in Andhra Pradesh, slated for June 10, took an interesting turn on Sunday with the Adani group debunking reports that either Gautam Adani or his wife Priti would be given a seat.For several months, there has been speculation among political circles in Amaravati that Priti Adani was most likely to be given one of the four Rajya Sabha seats on behalf of the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress (YSRC).The Adani group has been executing various projects in the state and Gautam Adani had personal interaction with YSRC president and Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on a few recent occasions, triggering the speculation.The group, however, issued a statement on Sunday saying such reports were 'blatantly false'.'It is unfortunate to see vested interests dragging our name into such speculative media reports. Neither Gautam Adani or Priti Adani nor any member of the Adani family has interest in a political career or in joining any political group,' the statement said.Interestingly, the Adani statement gave rise to fresh talk about a new prospective candidate -- another industrialist Chalamalasetti Sunil, who joined the YSRC after unsuccessfully contesting the Kakinada Lok Sabha seat as Telugu Desam Party nominee in 2019.Sunil's Greenko Energy is executing an integrated renewable energy storage project in Kurnool district, touted to be the first-of-its-kind in the world.Incidentally, Jagan will be visiting the project on May 17.Given the caste calculations, the choice may fall on Sunil, now that Adani is no longer in the race, YSRC sources noted.Rumour mills had the name of another big businessman from Telangana in circulation, as he is close to Jagan, but his name also did the rounds as a prospective candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party from another state.If these two business bigwigs are not considered, there is a long list of aspirants within the YSRC for a Rajya Sabha seat.With a strength of 151 MLAs of its own, and supported by four rebels of opposition TDP and Jana Sena, the YSRC will comfortably win all four Rajya Sabha seats that fall vacant in June, a gain of three.YSRC Parliamentary Party leader V Vijayasai Reddy, one of the four due to retire, is set be re-nominated.For two other seats, the names of Killi Kriparani, former Union Minister of State, and Beeda Mastan Rao are said to be under consideration. Both belong to the backward classes, with Kriparani having the added advantage of being a woman.The YSRC has so far not nominated a woman for Rajya Sabha and the gender has currently no representation from the State in the Upper House of Parliament."So Kriparani should be a natural choice," a senior YSRC leader pointed out.Notification for the biennial election will be issued on May 24 and the last date for filing nominations is May 31.As the chief minister is set to embark on a 10-day official-cum-private trip to Europe from May 20, YSRC leaders expect him to finalise the Rajya Sabha candidates before flying off.In all probability, the election could be an unanimous affair as the TDP, with just 20 MLAs, does not stand any chance.The YSRC's strength in the Council of States will swell to nine after the biennial election.The TDP and the BJP will be left with only one Rajya Sabha member each.—PTI

New Delhi: Swiss building material major Holcim has said its $6.38 billion deal with Asia's richest man Gautam Adani's group is tax-free. Holcim had on Sunday signed a binding agreement with the Adani Group to sell its business in India -- about a 63 per cent stake in Ambuja Cement, which owns a 54.53 stake in ACC (of which 4.48 per cent is direct shareholding). "So, according to our analysis, it is a tax-free transaction," Holcim CEO Jan Jenisch said while addressing investors after the deal on Monday."When asked about the tax implications, he said: "Never know if any complication arises, but we assume that we will get the 6.4 billion Swiss Francs as net proceeds."As per the deal, Adani Group will acquire Holcim's full stake in Ambuja Cement and ACC for CHF (Swiss franc) 6.4 billion ($6.38 billion). A day after, Adani also made an open offer to acquire a 26 per cent stake each in the two listed companies - Ambuja Cements and ACC Ltd -from public shareholders.The Adani family is routing the deal through Mauritius-based subsidiary Endeavour Trade and Investment, which is promoted by Acropolis Trade and Investment Ltd."The ultimate beneficial ownership of Acropolis Trade and Investment Ltd is held by certain members of the Adani family," as per the open offer. Holcim expects the deal to close in the second half of this year. The Swiss building major is also confident of getting the regulatory approval from the Competition Commission of India for the entire deal, which is estimated to be around $10.5 billion. "We have quite a simple contract. "So, basically, the only condition precedent is the approval of the Competition Commission of India, this has nothing to do with any potential litigation as a standard process... as Adani doesn't have building materials in his portfolio today, it is expected that this will be a very fast approval," Jenisch said. This is a simple contract, where Holcim is basically selling the company's shares in the two businesses, he asserted. "So, very straightforward. And no further conditions, no further due diligence, or anything involved in the transaction. "So, cross fingers, this should go quite smooth over the next two to three months," he added. Besides, Holcim also said that the new owner would be liable for the fines imposed by the CCI on Ambuja Cements and ACC after the sales. When asked if any investigations pending in India would lead to a fine either on Ambuja or ACC, who would have to pay, Jenisch said: "It will be with the new owner. We have sold the company... there would be no indemnification from our side." The fair trade regulator had slapped a fine of Rs 1,148 crore on ACC and Rs 1,164 crore on Ambuja Cements. Both companies have challenged the fine before the appellate authority, which had in July 2018 dismissed their plea. This is presently pending before the Supreme Court. Adani Group on Monday through Endeavour Trade and Investment has made an open offer at Rs 385 per share for Ambuja Cements Ltd and Rs 2,300 per share for ACC Ltd. For Ambuja Cements, Adani Group has made an open offer to its public shareholders to acquire up to 51.63 crore equity shares, representing 26 per cent of the expanded share capital, aggregating to a total consideration of Rs 19,879.57 crore. For ACC Ltd, Adani Group has offered to acquire up to 4.89 crore shares held by public shareholders, representing 26 per cent of the expanded share capital, aggregating to a total consideration of Rs 11,259.97 crore. The world's largest cement maker Holcim last month announced its exit from the country after struggling here for a long. Ambuja Cements and ACC currently have a combined installed production capacity of 70 million tonnes per annum.The two companies together have 23 cement plants, 14 grinding stations, 80 ready-mix concrete plants and over 50,000 channel partners across India.—PTI

Delhi: Billionaire Gautam Adani's group has created a new company for its foray into healthcare services through the acquisition of large hospitals, diagnostic chains, and offline and digital pharmacies. Adani Enterprises Ltd - the group's business incubator firm - in a regulatory filing said a wholly-owned subsidiary, Adani Health Ventures Ltd (AHVL) was incorporated on May 17, 2022.AVHL will "carry on the business of healthcare-related activities including, inter alia, setting up, running, administrating medical and diagnostic facilities, health aids, health tech-based facilities, research centers and to do all other allied and incidental activities in this regard," it said. AHVL, it said, will commence its business operations in due course. The group, which runs businesses from seaports to airports and energy, forayed into the cement sector through the acquisition of Swiss cement maker Holcim's India operations for a total of $10.5 billion. For its healthcare foray, the group reportedly has been in talks with big names in the sector and may invest up to $4 billion.It and Piramal Healthcare are reportedly in the race to buy the public sector pharmaceutical firm, HLL Lifecare Ltd (HLL). The government had in December 2021 decided to sell a 100 per cent stake of the company to private entities.As many as seven initial bids have been received for the company. The healthcare space in India is quite fragmented with the market dominated by local and regional players. In recent years, the online pharmacy space has witnessed a surge in mergers and acquisitions, like Reliance Industries Ltd acquiring a majority stake in online pharmacy Netmeds for Rs 620 crore. Tata Group has also forayed into the online pharmacy business with its app, Tata1mg.Some have seen healthcare as another sector where Adani and billionaire Mukesh Ambani clash but the two have different lines of business - the former is looking to build healthcare infrastructure and the latter wants to strengthen the retail chain.—PTI

Gujarat: A day after resigning from the Congress, Patidar leader Hardik Patel on Thursday said he has not taken any decision yet on joining any other party, be it the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat or the new entrant Aam Aadmi Party.Addressing a press conference in Ahmedabad, Patel (28) claimed the Congress had no vision and that leaders of the party were biased against Gujarati people. Ahead of the Gujarat Assembly polls due later this year, Patel on Wednesday resigned from the Congress, claiming top leaders of the party were distracted by their mobile phones and that Gujarat Congress leaders were more interested in arranging chicken sandwiches for them.Asked if he would join the BJP or the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party, Patel on Thursday said, "I have not taken any decision as of now on joining any political party, be it the BJP or AAP." New Delhi: Union Power Minister, RK Singh on Tuesday, said that the nation is now power surplus in comparison to what it was in 2014, adding that the country can transfer 1.12 lakh Megawatt (MW) of power from one corner of the country to another. Addressing a press conference, the union minister highlighted that the ministry overcame a deficit of 13 to 15 per cent. "We constructed 2,900 new substations, upgraded 3,800 substations and added 7.5 lakh new transformers. We achieved the target of having 40 per cent of our established power generation capacity from non-fossil fuels in November 2021," said Mr Singh.In order to further accelerate the ambitious renewable energy programmes, ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and green energy for all, Green Open Access Rules, 2022 were notified on June 6. As per the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, "These rules are notified for promoting generation, purchase and consumption of green energy including the energy from Waste-to-Energy plants. The notified Rules enable simplified procedure for the open access to green power. It will enable faster approval of Green OA, Uniform Banking, Voluntary purchase of RE power by commercial and industrial consumers, the applicability of OA charges etc." Ministry said The Ministry further said Commercial and Industrial consumers are allowed to purchase green power on a voluntary basis. Captive Consumers can take power under Green Open Access with no minimum limit. Discom Consumers can demand-supply of Green power to them.—ANI

New Delhi: A Muslim organisation has objected to Uttar Pradesh government's move to surveying madarsas. Maulana Arshad Madani, president Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, clarified that his objection is to the sectarian mentality in the current situation, not to the order to conduct a survey of Madrasas.
Madani said: "The way sectarian forces have created an atmosphere of hatred throughout the country in the last few years, and the role is being played by the government in this regard, the Muslim is forced to believe that every policy is coming forward to destroy their existence."
Madani said that madrassas are being targeted by sectarian forces and their intentions have to be understood. He also said that they have always tried to allow religious institutions to run on the basis of the rights given in the Constitution, but "sectarians are involved in a conspiracy to destroy them."
Madani spoke further that, madrasas in Assam are being bulldozed for being centres of terrorism and offices of Al-Qaeda, spreading unrest.
He said: "The Chief Minister of Assam is trying to justify the demolition of madrasas by making baseless accusations. They cannot present any proof till doomsday." —IANS

Saharanpur: Maulana Arshad Madani, veteran Muslim scholar and principal of Darul Uloom in Uttar Pradesh's Deoband, has said that it was well within the rights of the government to undertake a survey of madrasas.
"Let them conduct the survey. I see nothing wrong in it. There are no illegal activities being carried out in the madrasas. If any madrasa has been constructed illegally after land grab, we will have no problem if the government demolishes it," he told reporters.
He said that the community has no problem in providing information about the madrasas to the government.
"The government can do whatever it feels is in national interest but there should be no efforts to target the Muslims. This is a message that is being sent across and we are opposed to it," he said.
Maulana Madani said that madrasa has been the centre of enlightenment and love for thousands of years.
"Madrasas are there to fulfil our religious needs. Imams for lakhs of mosques are needed. They come from these madrasas. I have told madrasas that all questions of the government should be answered. Madrasa land should be legal," he added.
He further said that madrasa operators have been told that there should be good and hygienic food arrangements in madrasas.
About 500 persons related to various madrasas attended the convention in Darul Uloom on Sunday and discussed the issue of survey threadbare. —IANS

But taking a cue from countries like the US and China that are focusing on AI and MI (machine learning) to develop lethal autonomous weapons systems (LAWS), Adani Defence and Aerospace, along with its partner Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), have unveiled India's first AI based firing system 'ARBEL", the next-generation small arms solution at the DefExpo 2022 being held at Gandhinagar.
Soldier lethality and survivability are increased by ARBEL, a weapon-embedded Intelligent Fire Control System (IFCS) based on motion sensors.
It contains a rechargeable (field-level changeable) battery, control unit, motion and trigger sensors, and microprocessor. At a gathering of Kul Hind Raabta-e-Madaris Islamia held on Sunday at Darul Uloom Deoband in Deoband, Madani clarified the claims that madrasas incite violence and preach that only Muslims should have the right to life.
He claimed that if someone went into any madrasa at any given time, they would only find students and religious books within.
Additionally, he stated that while they are not against modern education and that they want their kids to succeed academically, become engineers, scientists, lawyers, and doctors, as well as enthusiastically take part in competitive exams and succeed, they also want them to first understand the religion and its principles.
Only madrasas can provide the better religious academics needed, he claimed.
He went into more detail about the goals of Darul Uloom and the role it played in the freedom movement. "The establishment of Darul Uloom had both education and India's freedom as goals. The Ulema entirely cut links with politics once the country gained independence and limited their actions to those that benefited the nation.
In response to criticism of madrasas, he said: "The people who learned at colleges and universities and are emigrating after stealing the riches of millions of residents and are living opulently overseas while the citizens are suffering from poverty and inflation, are they not anti-nationals?"
Will there be an effort to determine the percentage of Muslims among the missing? he questioned.
The law hasn't actually reached them yet, according to Madani.

Chennai (The Hawk): The RRPR Holding Private Ltd. of the Adani Group has been invited to propose two Directors to the board of New Delhi Television Ltd. (NDTV), and the proposal has been approved by the latter's Board.
The choice was made during the NDTV Board meeting on Friday and announced to the stock exchanges later that day.
In NDTV, RRPR Holding owns a 29.18% stake.
The appointment will be discussed at the upcoming board meeting, which is expected to take place on December 23, according to NDTV.
Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy, the RRPR Holding's initial promoters, recently resigned from their positions as directors as a result of the Adani Group purchasing a 99.5% share in the company.
Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy do, however, own 15.94% and 16.32%, respectively, of NDTV.
On the other hand, RRPR Holdings has named Senthil Sinniah Chengalvarayan, Sanjay Pugalia, and Sudipta Bhattacharya as Directors.
Additionally, the Adani Group has made an open offer to buy a further 26% stake in NDTV for Rs 294 a share.
NDTV share prices are now declining at the bourses after reaching a high of Rs 470.05 on December 1.
On the BSE, the share's closing price on Friday was Rs 330.95.

New Delhi: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has claimed that Muslim girls are being targeted with the temptation of apostasy being strengthened due to the co-education system, while asserting that it is against co-education and not education for women.
The president of the prominent Muslim body, Maulana Arshad Madani, has also claimed that religious extremism is being encouraged in the country to divert people’s attention from economic problems. “This game of dividing people on the basis of religious hatred and sectarianism will destroy the country. One cannot be led astray from the real issues for a long time. Instead of politics, if employment resources are not created, jobs are not given to educated youngsters, then the day is not far when these youngsters will be seen on the streets protesting,” Madani said while addressing a meeting of the Jamiat’s working committee on Sunday. laiming that the temptation of apostasy is spreading rapidly in the country, he alleged that it is aimed at Muslims in a planned manner, under which women and girls from the community are being “targeted”. If immediate and effective measures are not taken to prevent this temptation, the situation may become explosive in the coming days, Madani said. “This temptation is being strengthened due to the co-education system and that is why we are opposed to it. The media presented our point in a negative way and advertised that Maulana Madani is against education for girls. While we are against co-education, we are not against education for girls,” he was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the Jamiat.
“Whatever we can do, we have to do now for the welfare of the country and its educational development,” Madani said.
Noting that the country is at a critical juncture, the Jamiat president said on one hand, Muslims are being entangled in various problems, while on the other, the channels for economic, social, political and educational development are being blocked for them.
“If we have to defeat this conspiracy and achieve the zenith of success, we have to establish separate educational institutions for our boys and girls,” he said.
Madani said history is witness that education has been key to achieving progress in every age.
“So we have to attract our children not only towards higher education, rather we have to encourage them for competitive exams by taking out the feeling of inferiority from them and this way, we can give a resounding answer to every conspiracy against us,” he said.
In August 2021, the Jamiat had advocated setting up separate schools and colleges for women and girls and said non-Muslims should also refrain from opting for the co-education system for their daughters to “keep them away from immorality and misbehaviour”.
At Sunday’s meeting, an appeal was also made to all secular-minded people to unite and fight against the extremist and fascist forces at the political and social levels, instead of reacting emotionally. It called on people to make every effort to spread brotherhood, harmony, mutual tolerance and justice in the country.
“If the fascist parties and their supporters think that Muslims will become victims of their oppression and will be caught in the chains of their slavery and oppression in their own beloved country, then this is their vain hope,” Madani said.
“India is our country, we were born in this country…. Our forefathers have not only made this country strong and stable but have even sacrificed their lives for its protection and freedom. Therefore, we cannot tolerate injustice and discrimination against Muslims or any other group in the country,” he said.
The Jamiat president also condemned what he alleged was a “planned displacement of Muslims” in Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
“There is a plan to displace Muslims to build a parking lot in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, while a campaign to displace 43 Muslim and some non-Muslim families has started in Haridwar of Uttarakhand under the guise of widening the railway track. The Supreme Court has put an interim stay on both, but the danger still remains,” he said.
It was decided that the executive council meet of the Jamiat will be held in Patna on February 24-25 and the public conference on February 26.
