Pilibhit: Uttar Pradesh police on Monday arrested three out of five people who allegedly threw acid on a couple in order to pressurise them to withdraw a case they had lodged against the sexual assault of their daughter.Superintendent of Police, Pilibhit, Dinesh Kumar P. said that the couple suffered severe burn injuries. They were taken to Pilibhit district hospital where they were referred to another hospital in critical condition.The accused were identified as Chhotelal, Ramkishan, Ajay, Guddu and Harishankar, said the police.&nbsp;"During the investigation, it came to light that the couple on May 6 lodged a case against their neighbour identified as Rajesh for sexually harassing their daughter in the Gajraula police station area. The family alleged that the local police tried to cover up the matter," said the police."The victim of the sexual harassment case was to give her statement before the magistrate on Monday. The accused tried to pressurise them to withdraw the case but the family insisted on taking action against the accused of their daughter's sexual harassment. Angered with this, five people in the early morning of Monday threw forcibly entered their house and threw acid on the couple," said the SSP.Gajraula Inspector Tejpal Singh and Suhas, Outpost Incharge Lokesh Kumar were immediately suspended for negligence, the SSP added.&nbsp;—ANI

The police had formed 10 special teams to nab him as they came under criticism for the delaying the arrest. After 16 days, Kamakshipalya police finally nabbed the accused. The police were working on clues that the accused was a devotee and visited pilgrimage centres. After searching all religious places, the police could not find any clue as the accused had managed to hide in an 'ashram' as a religious sage, police sources said. The accused allegedly wore a saffron robe and pretended to be a spiritual man. The police also entered the ashram as devotees and managed to find clues about Nagesh and finally nabbed him.The incident had taken place on April 28.The attacker Nagesh, who was waiting in an autorickshaw near the workplace of a girl at Sunkadakatte in Bengaluru, chased and poured acid on her. The girl sustained 35 per cent burn injuries.The police said the accused studied in the same school with the victim. After facing rejection from the girl, the accused attacked her. Karnataka Health Minister, K. Sudhakar had visited the victim in the hospital and assured her free treatment. The victim had developed complications after going through fifth surgery. She had suffered 36 per cent burn injuries when her jilted lover attacked her on April 28 and has been in the hospital ever since.The woman was in a semiconscious state and was responding to the treatment. Since, she suffered a drop in her oxygen level, she was again shifted to the ICU ward.The doctors said, “The woman’s burn injuries were on her neck, face and one part of the temple. The skin transplantation has begun and she has to stay for at least one more month in the hospital. The woman has started food intake.” On April 28 the attacker, Nagesh, who was waiting in an auto near the workplace of the woman in Sunkadakatte in Bengaluru, had chased her on the road and then poured acid on her.The police said that the accused studied in the same school with the victim in SSLC (Class 10). However, the girl had spurned his advances. Karnataka Health Minister K. Sudhakar had visited the acid attack victim in the hospital and assured free treatment. He also announced that the government would provide her with a suitable job once she recovers. The attacker, who was at large, was found hiding as a religious seer in Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu. Washington: After discovering acidity levels increasing three to four times faster in the western region of the Arctic Ocean than in any ocean waters elsewhere, an international team of researchers has sounded new alarm bells.
The team, which includes University of Delaware marine chemistry expert Wei-Jun Cai, also identified a strong correlation between the accelerated rate of melting ice in the region and the rate of ocean acidification, a perilous combination that threatens the survival of plants, shellfish, coral reefs and other marine life and biological processes throughout the planet's ecosystem.
The new study, published on Thursday, Sept. 30 in Science, the flagship journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, is the first analysis of Arctic acidification that includes data from more than two decades, spanning the period from 1994 to 2020. Scientists have predicted that by 2050 -- if not sooner -- Arctic sea ice in this region will no longer survive the increasingly warm summer seasons. As a result of this sea-ice retreat each summer, the ocean's chemistry will grow more acidic, with no persistent ice cover to slow or otherwise mitigate the advance.
That creates life-threatening problems for the enormously diverse population of sea creatures, plants and other living things that depend on a healthy ocean for survival. Crabs, for example, live in a crusty shell built from the calcium carbonate prevalent in ocean water. Polar bears rely on healthy fish populations for food, fish and sea birds rely on plankton and plants, and seafood is a key element of many humans' diets.
That makes acidification of these distant waters a big deal for many of the planet's inhabitants.
First, a quick refresher course on pH levels, indicates how acidic or alkaline a given liquid is. Any liquid that contains water can be characterized by its pH level, which ranges from 0 to 14, with pure water considered neutral with a pH of 7. All levels lower than 7 are acidic, and all levels greater than 7 are basic or alkaline, with each full step representing a tenfold difference in the hydrogen ion concentration. Examples on the acidic side include battery acid, which checks in at 0 pH, gastric acid (1), black coffee (5) and milk (6.5). Tilting toward basic are blood (7.4), baking soda (9.5), ammonia (11) and drain cleaner (14). Seawater is normally alkaline, with a pH value of around 8.1.
Cai, the Mary A.S. Lighthipe Professor in the School of Marine Science and Policy in UD's College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, has published significant research on the changing chemistry of the planet's oceans and this month completed a cruise from Nova Scotia to Florida, serving as a chief scientist among 27 aboard the research vessel. The work, supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), includes four areas of study: The East Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific Coast and the Alaska/Arctic region.
The new study in Science included UD postdoctoral researcher Zhangxian Ouyang, who participated in a recent voyage to collect data in the Chukchi Sea and Canada Basin in the Arctic Ocean.
The first author of the publication was Di Qi, who works with Chinese research institutes in Xiamen and Qingdao. Also collaborating on this publication were scientists from Seattle, Sweden, Russia and six other Chinese research sites.
"You can't just go by yourself," Cai said. "This international collaboration is very important for collecting long-term data over a large area in the remote ocean. In recent years, we have also collaborated with Japanese scientists as accessing the Arctic water was even harder in the past three years due to COVID-19. And we always have European scientists participating."
Cai said he and Qi both were baffled when they first reviewed the Arctic data together during a conference in Shanghai. The acidity of the water was increasing three to four times faster than in ocean waters elsewhere.
That was stunning indeed. But why was it happening?
Cai soon identified a prime suspect: the increased sea ice melt during the Arctic's summer season.
Historically, the Arctic's sea ice has melted in shallow marginal regions during summer. That started to change in the 1980s, Cai said, but waxed and waned periodically. In the past 15 years, the ice melt has accelerated, advancing into the deep basin in the north.
For a while, scientists thought the melting ice could provide a promising "carbon sink," where carbon dioxide from the atmosphere would be sucked into the cold, carbon-hungry waters hidden under the ice. That cold water would hold more carbon dioxide than warmer waters could and might help to offset the effects of increased carbon dioxide elsewhere in the atmosphere.
When Cai first studied the Arctic Ocean in 2008, he saw that the ice had melted beyond the Chukchi Sea in the northwest corner of the region, all the way to the Canada Basin -- far beyond its typical range. He and his collaborators found that the fresh meltwater did not mix into deeper waters, which would have diluted the carbon dioxide. Instead, the surface water soaked up the carbon dioxide until it reached about the same levels as in the atmosphere and then stopped collecting it. They reported this result in a paper in Science in 2010.
That would also change the pH level of the Arctic waters, they knew, reducing the alkaline levels of the seawater and reducing its ability to resist acidification. But how much? And how soon? It took them another decade to collect enough data to derive a sound conclusion on the long-term acidification trend.
Analyzing data gathered from 1994 to 2020 - the first time such a long-term perspective was possible -- Cai, Qi and their collaborators found an extraordinary increase in acidification and a strong correlation with the increasing rate of melting ice. They point to sea-ice melt as the key mechanism to explain this rapid pH decrease because it changes the physics and chemistry of the surface water in three primary ways:
- The water under the sea ice, which had a deficit of carbon dioxide, now is exposed to atmospheric carbon dioxide and can take up carbon dioxide freely.
- The seawater mixed with meltwater is light and cannot mix easily into deeper waters, which means the carbon dioxide taken from the atmosphere is concentrated at the surface.
- The meltwater dilutes the carbonate ion concentration in the seawater, weakening its ability to neutralize the carbon dioxide into bicarbonate and rapidly decreasing ocean pH.
Cai said more research is required to further refine the above mechanism and better predict future changes, but the data so far show again the far-reaching ripple effects of climate change. "If all of the multiple-year ice is replaced by first-year ice, then there will be lower alkalinity and lower buffer capacity and acidification continues," he said. "By 2050, we think all of the ice will be gone in the summer. Some papers predict that will happen by 2030. And if we follow the current trend for 20 more years, the summer acidification will be really, really strong."&nbsp;
No one knows exactly what that will do to the creatures and plants and other living things that depend on healthy ocean waters.
"How will this affect the biology there?" Cai asked. "That is why this is important." —ANI

Lahore: At least two children were admitted to a hospital after a restaurant in Lahore allegedly served acid bottles during birthday celebrations, Samaa TV reported Monday. According to the FIR registered at the Lari Adda Police Station, the complainant claimed that on September 27, the family went to a restaurant situated inside the Greater Iqbal Park to celebrate birthday.
The complainant said that after dinner, a guest used one of the water bottles served by the restaurant to wash the hands of his son. As soon as the water was poured over his hand, the child started screaming, Samaa TV reported. Around the same time, another child drank from one of the bottles and fell unconscious after throwing up. One of the relatives, who was attending to the child, also developed blisters on his hands when the child vomited on him. The victims’ family said both children were shifted to the hospital.

Bengaluru (The Hawk): The man who attacked a 23-year-old woman with acid here on April 28 has gangrene and risks having his leg amputated.
The survivor called it God's punishment and said she was waiting for the court to punish the offender.
Nagesh, also known as acid Naga, is currently receiving medical care in a jail clinic.
"My life has becoming quite difficult. I have to attend hospitals frequently since I require many procedures. God has punished him, but I don't like the outcome. Awaiting the court's decision because he merits a more severe penalty, "She spoke.
In connection with the acid attack case, Karnataka police had already provided the court with a 770-page charge-sheet.
Attacker Nagesh pursued the girl and splashed acid on her while waiting in a car near the girl's place of employment in Sunkadakatte, Bengaluru.
The girl suffered burn injuries that were 35% burnt. According to the authorities, the offender and the victim both attended the same SSLC school (Class 10). After the girl flatly rejected him, he changed into a spurned lover and attacked her.
The charge sheet provided to the 13th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court lists the names of up to 92 witnesses. The investigators had also provided the IPC Section 164-required statements of two eyewitnesses.
Ten special teams were created to find the acid attacker as pressure increased from all directions regarding the holding him for too long. After 16 days, the Kamakshipalya police finally caught him at Tiruvannamalai.
Nagesh had been missing since April 28 and was able to elude authorities by posing as a religious seer wearing saffron clothing. Police officers visited the ashram with devotees, managed to gather information about him, and eventually apprehended him.
He was shot in the leg by the police when he attempted to flee after being apprehended.

The police control room (PCR) call about an acid assault incident in the Mohan Garden area was received at 9 a.m., according to M. Harsha Vardhan, the deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka).
According to the caller, a man riding pillion on a bike is accused of attacking a 17-year-old girl with an acid-like substance at 7.30 a.m.
"The youngster was with her little sister when the incident happened. She has sparked suspicions about two people who are familiar to them. Although one person has been apprehended, the incident is still under investigation, according to the DCP.

The DCW has also requested information on the people accountable for enabling the sale of acid on the portal, as well as information on the measures taken to hold them accountable. The panel has requested that the requested information be given to the commission no later than December 20 in order to emphasise the seriousness of the situation.

California: A new method developed by the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) and the University of California, Riverside allows researchers to show how fatty acids are absorbed by single cells, providing new insights into cancer biology.
Fatty acids, along with glucose and amino acids, are an important source of energy for cellular growth and proliferation, and abnormal fatty acid metabolism is frequently seen in cancer. For years, Dr. Wei Wei's lab at ISB and Dr. Min Xue's lab at UC Riverside have worked together to develop a series of chemical probes and analytical approaches for quantifying cellular glucose uptake, lactate production, amino acid uptake, and other cancer-related metabolites.
Unlike glucose and amino acids, however, the mechanisms underlying the uptake of fatty acids into cells have been lesser known and difficult to discern. The technical tools for measuring fatty acid uptake at the single-cell level are extremely limited.
"This work is the first example of profiling fatty acid uptake in conjunction with aberrant protein signaling in cancer cells at single-cell resolution and represents an important advance in the single-cell metabolic assay," said ISB Assistant Professor Dr. Wei Wei, co-corresponding author of a just-published paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. To profile the fatty acid uptake, the researchers chose a surrogate molecule that was structurally similar to natural fatty acids. This similarity tricked the cells into taking up these surrogates like the native ones. Then, using a unique dendrimer molecule - a tree-like polymer - the researchers achieved precise quantitation of those surrogates from single cells.
Applying this new single-cell tool to a brain cancer model, the researchers identified that fatty acid uptake was differentially regulated by two downstream effectors of the Mammalian Target of Rapamycin (mTOR) - a critical regulator of cell proliferation and protein synthesis. The results revealed a compensatory activation of fatty acid metabolism upon oncogene inhibition or attenuation of glucose metabolism in these brain cancer cells and uncovered a novel combination therapy that targets this bioenergetic flexibility to synergistically block the tumor growth.
"This novel tool opens new avenues for studying how fatty acid metabolism affects biological systems. It has also inspired us to develop more metabolic probes for single-cell analysis," said UC Riverside Assistant Professor Dr. Min Xue, co-corresponding author on the paper.

Farrukhabad: A 35-year-old woman and her 14-year-old son died after allegedly consuming acid in Daraura village of Farrukhabad district.
According to police, Prem, a Class eight student, was scolded by his mother, Malti Devi, following which he got annoyed and consumed acid kept in the house.
On seeing the deteriorating condition of her son, the mother too drank acid.
Avanish Kumar, Devi's husband, said, "I was at the temple when the incident took place, and my daughter Palak, who was at the house, called me. I rushed home and, with villagers' help, took them to the district hospital where they died during treatment."
Upon receiving information, police rushed to the hospital and sent the bodies for autopsy.
Dr Sanjay Kumar Singh, additional Superintendent of Police (SP), Farrukhabad said, "Further investigation is on and action will be taken accordingly."
Several officials, including CO Amritpur Ravindra Nath Rai and SHO Amarpal Singh, reached the village and questioned the family members and neighbours regarding the incident.&nbsp;

Washington: Scientists use computer models of biological components found in meteorites to help them understand the origins of life on Earth. All biological amino acids on Earth appear exclusively in their left-handed form, but the reason underlying this observation is elusive. Recently, scientists from Japan uncovered new clues about the cosmic origin of this asymmetry. Based on the optical properties of amino acids found on the Murchison meteorite, they conducted physics-based simulations, revealing that the precursors to the biological amino acids may have determined the amino acid chirality during the early phase of galactic evolution. The Murchison meteorite is a meteorite that fell in Australia in 1969 near Murchison, Victoria. One of the oldest known remnants of the pre-Earth solar system, this meteorite played a pivotal role in confirming the presence of carbon molecules elsewhere in the universe. If you look at your hands, you will notice that they are mirror images of each other. However, no matter how hard you try to flip and rotate one hand, you will never be able to superimpose it perfectly over the other. Many molecules have a similar property called "chirality," which means that the "left-handed" (L) version of a molecule cannot be superimposed onto its "right-handed" (D) mirror image version. Even though both versions of a chiral molecule, called "enantiomers," have the same chemical formula, the way they interact with other molecules, especially with other chiral molecules, can vary immensely. Interestingly, one of the many mysteries surrounding the origin of life as we know it has to do with chirality. It turns out that biological amino acids (AAs) -- the building blocks of proteins -- on Earth appear only in one of their two possible enantiomeric forms, namely the L-form. However, if you synthesize AAs artificially, both L and D forms are produced in equal amounts. This suggests that, at some early point in the past, L-AAs must have come to dominate a hetero-chiral world. This phenomenon is known as "chiral symmetry breaking." Against this backdrop, a research team led by Assistant Professor Mitsuo Shoji from University of Tsukuba, Japan, conducted a study aimed at solving this mystery. As explained in their paper published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, the team sought to find evidence supporting the cosmic origin of the homochirality of AAs on Earth, as well as iron out some inconsistencies and contradictions in our previous understanding. "The idea that homochirality may have originated in space was suggested after AAs were found in the Murchison meteorite that fell in Australia in 1969," explains Dr Shoji. Curiously enough, in the samples obtained from this meteorite, each of the L-enantiomers was more prevalent than its D-enantiomer counterpart. One popular explanation for this suggests that the asymmetry was induced by ultraviolet circularly polarized light (CPL) in the star-forming regions of our galaxy. Scientists verified that this type of radiation can, indeed, induce asymmetric photochemical reactions that, given enough time, would favour the production of L-AAs over D-AAs. However, the absorption properties of the AA isovaline (isovaline is a rare amino acid transported to earth by the Murchison meteorite) are opposite to those of the other AAs, meaning that the UV-based explanation alone is either insufficient or incorrect. Against this backdrop, Dr Shoji's team pursued an alternate hypothesis. Instead of far-UV radiation, they hypothesized that the chiral asymmetry was, in fact, induced specifically by the CP Lyman-a (Lya) emission line, a spectral line of hydrogen atom that permeated the early Milky Way. Moreover, instead of focusing only on photoreactions in AAs, the researchers investigated the possibility of the chiral asymmetry starting in the precursors to the AAs, namely amino propanals (APs) and amino nitriles (ANs). Through quantum mechanical calculations, the team analyzed Lya-induced reactions for producing AAs along the chemical pathway adopted in Strecker synthesis. They then noted the ratios of L- to D-enantiomers of AAs, APs, and ANs at each step of the process. The results showed that L-enantiomers of ANs are preferentially formed under right-handed CP (R-CP) Lya irradiation, with their enantiomeric ratios matching those for the corresponding AAs. "Taken together, our findings suggest that ANs underlie the origin of the homochirality," remarks Dr Shoji. "More specifically, irradiating AN precursors with R-CP Lya radiation lead to a higher ratio of L-enantiomers. The subsequent predominance of L-AAs is possible via reactions induced by water molecules and heat." The study thus brings us one step closer to understanding the complex history of our own biochemistry. The team emphasizes that more studies focused on ANs need to be conducted on future samples from asteroids and comets to validate their findings. "Further analyses and theoretical investigations of ANs and other prebiotic molecules related to sugars and nucleobases will provide new insights into the chemical evolution of molecules and, in turn, the origin of life," concludes an optimistic Shoji. —ANI

Washington: According to scientists, protein from two ounce-equivalents (oz-eq) of animal-based protein foods provides greater essential amino acids (EAA) bioavailability than an equal two oz-eq of plant-based protein foods. The protein quality of a food or meal (i.e., its EAA content) is an important factor in determining how the body can use amino acids for muscle and whole-body protein building.4ial amino acids compared to plant protein. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs) emphasise consuming a variety of protein foods with similar nutritional content in ounce-equivalent portions. One ounce-equivalent equals one ounce of meat, one whole egg, 0.25 cup beans, or 0.5 ounces nuts. “The basis for the DGAs stating that these protein foods are ‘equivalent’ and have ‘similar nutritional content’ is unclear,” suggests Dr. Wayne Campbell, primary investigator on this study and professor in the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University. Protein foods differ in their energy and nutrient content, including protein quantity and quality he added. Additionally, there is limited information on how eating oz-eq amounts of protein foods from different sources as part of a mixed meal impacts the body’s ability to digest and use protein. From Connolly et al. (2023).1; The protein from the test meal is included in the protein quantity for each trial: lean pork (20 g), whole eggs (18.5 g), black beans (13.5 g), and almonds (12 g). The EAA from the test meal is included in the total amount of EAA for each trial: lean pork loin (9.45 g), whole eggs (7.47 g), black beans (5.11 g), and almonds (3.94 g). EAA stands for essential amino acids. This includes populations like younger adults who may be vulnerable to a lack of variety in their protein choices, as well as older adults who may be under-consuming high-quality sources of nutrient-dense protein despite higher nutrient needs. As a result, researchers wanted to see if eating two oz-eq portions of animal-based versus plant-based protein foods as part of a mixed whole foods meal affected EAA bioavailability for protein building differently in these populations. Two cross-over randomised controlled trials on 30 otherwise healthy young adults and 25 older adults were conducted. Each participant in the study completed four separate 300-minute trials, each separated by at least three days. The order in which the participants completed their protein food assignments was kept a secret from the study investigators until all participants completed their testing and the results were analysed. During the trial period, study participants were required to eat a standardised meal containing two oz-eq of either animal-based protein foods (e.g., unprocessed lean pork loin, scrambled whole eggs) or plant-based protein foods (black beans, raw sliced almonds). To determine EAA bioavailability as well as blood sugar and insulin levels, blood samples were taken at baseline and 30, 60, 120, 180, 240, and 300 minutes after eating. “In line with our hypothesis before starting this study, consuming meals with two oz-eq of animal-based protein foods resulted in more EAAs in the bloodstream compared to meals with two oz-eq of plant-based protein foods in both young and older adults, separately and combined,” explains Dr. Gavin Connolly, clinical trials project manager and research associate in the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University. Also, there were no differences in EAA bioavailability between young and older adults, he added “In line with our hypothesis before starting this study, consuming meals with two oz-eq of animal-based protein foods resulted in more EAAs in the bloodstream compared to meals with two oz-eq of plant-based protein foods in both young and older adults, separately and combined,” explained Dr Gavin Connolly, clinical trials project manager and research associate in the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University. Also, there were no differences in EAA bioavailability between young and older adults, he added “Portion sizes of the protein foods in the study likely do not truly reflect the amounts consumed on a meal-to-meal or weekly basis by young or older adults,” according to Dr Connolly.
