Rishikesh: Commemorating Iron Deficiency Day 2022 (IDD), P&amp;G Health in association with FOGSI (The Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India) stepped up on efforts to raise awareness about Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) with the "Na Na Anemia Bus Yatra". Flagged off from Rishikesh by Milind Thatte, Managing Director, Procter &amp; Gamble Health Limited and Dr Hrishikesh Pai, President, FOGSI, the "Na Na Anemia Bus Yatra" will travel to 20 cities across the 5 states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal over 40 days, culminating in Kolkata on 4th January 2023.
Milind Thatte, Managing Director, Procter &amp; Gamble Health Limited, said, "P&amp;G Health has been dedicated to awareness and education efforts on iron deficiency through our flagship brand Livogen, for over 50 years in India. Through the "Na Na Anemia Bus Yatra" in collaboration with FOGSI, we aim to create awareness till the last mile and empower people to identify early symptoms of IDA and take measures to overcome them. Under this initiative, free screening will be provided to over 5000 individuals along with Blood Pressure monitoring and an examination by a Gynecologist/Physician."
Iron deficiency affects all ages, with children, women who are pregnant or menstruating, and people on kidney dialysis among those at the highest risk for this condition. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that Iron Deficiency contributes to 50 per cent of all cases of anemia[1]. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) data revealed that 1 in every 2 women in India is anemic and the prevalence is around 57 per cent in non-pregnant women &amp; 52 per cent in pregnant women. One in three women suffer from Iron Deficiency symptoms including tiredness, dizziness, paleness and hair fall[2]. But these symptoms are often ignored, making early identification of these symptoms and seeking timely diagnosis the need of the hour.

Col AK Mukherjee said that after joining AIIMS, he identified some points from the point of view of intelligence at the institutional level and made corrective efforts in them.

Rishikesh (The Hawk): Dr. Anshuman Darbari, Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) AIIMS Rishikesh has been honored with Mahatma Award in Delhi for his distinguished work. Supported by Aditya Birla Group, this award is given to talented people doing distinguished work in the social sector. Dr. Darbari is a Senior Cardiac surgeon at AIIMS Rishikesh and has been serving in AIIMS Rishikesh for more than 10 years.&nbsp;
during a program organized on Delhi's last day, this award has been given to Dr. Darbari for his impressive contribution to healthcare excellence. Dr. Darbari was also given this award for developing a heart and lung surgery center at AIIMS Rishikesh in Uttarakhand as well as providing heart and lung surgery facilities to needy patients through the public welfare schemes of the center and the state. It is noteworthy that Rishikesh AIIMS is the first among the six newly AIIMS developed under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya suraksha Yojana established by the Central Government, which is providing this facility. Bengaluru / Rishikesh: Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have joined hands with AIIMS Rishikesh to create an algorithm that can help decipher brain scans and identify the occurrence and type of epilepsy.
The development has the potential to do away with the current practice of manual evaluation of Electroencephalogram (EEG) which can be often tedious and sometimes lead to errors.
Epilepsy is a neurological condition where the brain emits sudden bursts of electrical signals in a short amount of time, resulting in seizures, fits and sometimes even death.
Based on the point of origin of the brain's erratic signals, epilepsy is classified as either focal or generalised epilepsy. Focal epilepsy occurs when the erratic signals are confined to a specific region in the brain. If the signals are at random locations, then it is termed as generalised epilepsy, an IISc statement said.
"The research aims to differentiate EEG of normal subjects from epileptic EEGs. Additionally, the developed algorithm attempts to identify the types of seizures. Our work is to help the neurologists make an efficient and quick automated screening and diagnosis," says Hardik J. Pandya, Assistant Professor at the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering (DESE) and the corresponding author of the study published in Biomedical Signal Processing and Control.
During the course of their study, the team noted a novel algorithm that can sift through EEG data and identify signatures of epilepsy from the electrical signal patterns.
After initial training, the algorithm was able to detect whether a human subject could have epilepsy or not -- based on these patterns in their respective analyses -- with a high degree of accuracy, the researchers say.
To develop and train the algorithm, the researchers first examined EEG data from 88 human subjects acquired at AIIMS Rishikesh. Each subject underwent a 45-minute EEG test, divided into two parts: an initial 10-minute test when the subject was awake, which included photic stimulation and hyperventilation, followed by a 35-minute sleep period when the subject was asked to sleep. Next, the team analysed this data and classified different wave patterns into sharp signals, spikes and slow waves.
Spikes are patterns where a signal rises and falls within a very short duration of time (70 milliseconds), while sharps are those with rises and falls spread over a slightly longer duration (250 milliseconds) and slow waves have a much longer duration (400 milliseconds).
An epileptic subject shows a different set of patterns compared to a healthy individual. The researchers developed an algorithm to calculate the total number of sharp waves -- the Cumulative Sharp Count -- and use this as a parameter to detect if the subject is epileptic or not (a higher value indicates a greater chance that the subject is epileptic).
The algorithm also calculates the sum of areas under the spikes and sharp curves to distinguish between focal and generalised epilepsy (a greater value indicates generalised epilepsy as opposed to focal epilepsy, which has a lower value).
The researchers add that the study shows a way to identify absence seizures (those that involve a brief, sudden lapse of consciousness), using a Cumulative Spike-Wave Count; in some cases, these absence seizures are critical and can be fatal.
The team then ran their algorithm on a new set of EEG data from subjects for whom the classification (whether they had epilepsy, and if so, what type of epilepsy they had) was already known to the doctors. This blind validation study successfully classified the subjects accurately in nearly 91 per cent of the cases.
"We hope to refine this further by testing on more data to consider more variabilities of human EEGs until we reach the point where this becomes completely translational and robust," says Rathin K. Joshi, a PhD student in DESE and first author of the study.
IISc said that a patent has been filed for the work and the algorithm is being tested for its reliability by physicians at AIIMS Rishikesh. —IANS

In the two-day conference, expert doctors said that the use of the latest technologies in the medical field reduces the risk and can make the treatment related to urology easier. The chief guest of the program, Professor (Dr.) Dr. Meenu Singh, Executive Director, AIIMS Rishikesh said that this conference would especially benefit the MCh students of the Department of Urology. she said that not only the patients but also the team of doctors performing the surgery would be benefitted by adopting the latest techniques and better procedures in the treatment of patients. Dr. Meenu said that along with the experience in the treatment of the patient, the communication style of the doctor also depends. Therefore, there is a need to adopt sensitivity with the patients.
Guest of honor Prof. Manoj Gupta Dean of Academics told the need for its evaluation from time to time. He said that this national conference would help everyone to understand the basic concepts of urodynamics and also to gain experience in the treatment process by sharing information about treatments and techniques with each other.
Urologists from all over the country were apprised of the purpose of the conference and the latest advances in urodynamics by Professor (Dr.) Ankur Mittal, HOD Department of Urology AIIMS Rishikesh. He said that urodynamics is a difficult area for many urologists, but there is no doubt that the interpretation and management of patients who undergo urodynamic testing will benefit all of us after extensive discussions at the conference. Male and female urinary tract disorders were also discussed extensively at the conference. Urologists from different fields also highlighted how to diagnose rare urological disorders early to reduce the suffering of the patients. Along with this, live workshops were also organized on the related subject.
Dr. Arup Kumar Mandal and Dr. Vikas Panwar Urologists of AIIMS Rishikesh also addressed the conference. While long hours in front of the screen has led some students to experience eyesight problems, others have been left with a persistent inability to sustain attention during online classes. Additionally, the Internet was used as a&nbsp;shared medium for submitting work assignments as well as engaging in leisure activities such as social networking or gaming. Students often found this overlap difficult to deal with, leading to further distractibility and absenteeism.For students entering adolescence and puberty, peer opinion and approval often plays a pivotal role in shaping their self esteem and worldview. A mere possibility of a technical glitch or a delayed, deprecating response from a friend could make them feel isolated and cut-off from the rest of the world. The inability to communicate, a feeling of being unheard, or having to deal with uncertainty may contribute remarkably to increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Such an overriding dependence on a forum as hypothetical and elusive as the Internet may lead to the externalization of self-worth and create a rapid cycling of highs and lows leaving the psyche vulnerable to imbalance and breakdown.Though the idea of physical isolation coupled with virtual connectedness may help in stimulating our mental abilities, it often gives rise to a gap between reality and fantasy without adequate checks in between.In such a situation, students must be taught to use the Internet wisely, using personal discretion and responsibility.
