Speeding truck kills cyclist, leaves another critically injured in Chhattisgarh

Raipur/Kondagaon, April 3 (IANS) In yet another tragic incident highlighting the growing danger of speeding trucks on national highways, a cyclist was killed on the spot, and a motorcyclist sustained serious injuries in a road accident on National Highway-30 early Friday morning.

The accident occurred around 4 a.m. between Chichadi and Manjhi Athgaon under the jurisdiction of Farsagaon Police Station in Kondagaon district.

According to police officials, a speeding truck first collided with a motorcyclist and then violently rammed into two cyclists riding on the highway.

The police officials further said that the impact was so severe that one of the cyclists died instantly on the spot. The motorcyclist, who was also hit in the chain of collisions, suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to the district hospital in Kondagaon for treatment. The police sources said his condition is critical.

Both the victims have yet to be identified. Police have reached the spot and initiated an investigation. The truck driver is believed to have fled the scene after the accident.

A case has been registered against the unidentified truck driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. The police have launched a hunt for the driver and expect him to be in custody soon.

Local residents and commuters expressed anger over the recurring incidents of reckless driving by heavy vehicles on this stretch of NH-30. Many have demanded stricter patrolling, speed cameras, and better enforcement of traffic rules during early morning hours when visibility is often low.

The body of the deceased cyclist has been sent for postmortem, while the identity of both the deceased and the injured motorcyclist is yet to be officially confirmed by the police.

This incident adds to the growing list of fatal accidents on Chhattisgarh’s national highways, raising serious concerns about road safety in the region.
