Chennai: A Tamil Nadu Police team, probing the death of two people after drinking liquor from a Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) liquor outlet in Thanjavur, is studying the call details of the deceased cab driver Vivek.

The team is also looking whether any Tasmac employee was involved in lacing the liquor with cyanide, the presence of which was found in the viscera of the deceased Vivek and labourer Kuppusamy.

According to sources in the investigation team, someone who is an insider would have laced the liquor that Vivek bought with the deadly poison and the involvement of a goldsmith is not ruled out.

A source told IANS that the team has some suspects in mind but is unable to connect the dots and is probing various angles to bring out a conclusion.

The Call Data Record (CDR) of the cab driver is being scrutinised using the support of the Cyber wing of the state police. The police are suspecting the role of a woman who was his acquaintance.

The CCTV camera in the Tasmac outlet at Thanjvur from where Vivek bought liquor is not functioning. The police team have almost concluded that daily wage labourer Kuppusamy, who also died along with Vivek, had consumed liquor form the leftover bottle of Vivek without knowledge of cyanide being laced in it.

Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, C. Sylendra Babu is directly monitoring the case with the police officers who are in the investigation team.

New Delhi: In a first, a MiG-29K fighter jet undertook a maiden night landing on the indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. The Navy termed it as a 'historic milestone'.

The Indian Navy said, "A MiG-29K has successfully made a night landing on India's indigenous INS Vikrant warship. This achievement of the Navy is a big step towards the growing power of self-reliant India."

The maiden night landing was made on Wednesday night when INS Vikrant was sailing in the Arabian sea, an official said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Navy for the successful maiden night landing trials of the MiG-29K on INS Vikrant.

"Congratulations to the Indian Navy for successfully undertaking the maiden night landing trials of MiG-29K on #INSVikrant," the Defence Minister said on Twitter.

"This remarkable achievement is a testimony to the skills, perseverance and professionalism of the Vikrant crew and Naval pilots. Kudos to them," he tweeted.

Earlier, the naval version of the Tejas aircraft had successfully landed on INS Vikrant in February. However, the MiG-29K landing is believed to be more important. The major reason for this is that while the Tejas aircraft landed during the day, the MiG-29K's landing took place at night.

The Indian Navy had also landed a Kamov 31 helicopter on INS Vikrant on March 28. Navy officials say that indigenous lighting accessories and shipborne systems were used during the test, which proved to be completely successful.

In September 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned India's first indigenously-built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant which made the country a part of an elite group of nations capable of manufacturing aircraft carriers above 40,000 tonnes category.

Built at a cost of around Rs 23,000 crore, INS Vikrant has a sophisticated air defence network and anti-ship missile systems.

It has the capacity to hold 30 fighter jets and helicopters. IANS

Prayagraj (UP): The Allahabad High Court, hearing an appeal by a man against the dismissal of his divorce petition by a family court, on Thursday observed that denying sex to a spouse for a long time without sufficient reason amounts to mental cruelty.

The high court said that it was evident from the record that, since long, the parties to the marriage had been living separately, and the wife had denied discharging the obligation of marital liability.

The couple had got married in 1979. After seven years, the wife's 'gauna' ceremony was performed and they started living as a couple.

According to the petitioner, his wife refused to fulfil her obligation of marital life and then she left for her parents' home.

The husband claimed that he made several attempts to convince her but the woman did not establish any physical relationship with him. The man was serving in the police department and had to reside at the place of his posting.

In July 1994, the couple got mutually separated before a panchayat after the man paid alimony of Rs 22,000 to his wife. She later married another man.

Then the husband approached a court seeking divorce on grounds of mental cruelty and desertion. However, the trial court refused to grant divorce on the grounds of cruelty.

Feeling aggrieved, he filed an appeal before the Allahabad High Court against the order of the family court which dismissed his divorce plea.

A bench of Justice Suneet Kumar and Justice Rajendra Kumar-IV, while granting the husband a decree of divorce, on Thursday said: "Undoubtedly, not allowing a spouse for a long time to have sexual intercourse with his or her partner, without sufficient reason, itself amounts to mental cruelty. Since there is no acceptable view in which a spouse can be compelled to resume life with the consort, nothing is given by trying to keep the parties tied forever to a marriage."

Terming the approach taken by the family court "hyper-technical", the bench said: "It is evident from the record that since long, the parties to the marriage have been living separately, according to plaintiff-appellant, defendant-respondent had no respect for marital bond, denied discharging obligation of marital liability. There has been a complete breakdown of their marriage." IANS

Thiruvananthapuram: A preliminary probe has been launched by police after a final year BSc Agriculture student at the Kerala Agriculture College suffered "mysterious" burn injury on her back.

As per reports, two final year female students -- both from Andhra Pradesh - were roommates at their hostel here and one of them suffered a burn injury on the back.

The incident is reported to have occurred last week.

Strangely, the student did not raise any complaint. It was only after her family came here on hearing about the incident that the College authorities asked the local police to look into the matter.

Neither the injured student nor her family members have registered an official complaint. Hence, the police are only making a formal probe.

Gurugram: A total of 271 complaints of medical negligence against doctors and staff working at private and government hospitals in Gurugram have been recorded from January 2019 to April 15, 2023.

District Medical Negligence Board has claimed that of the total negligence complaints, 253 have been resolved and 18 are pending due to various official reasons.

Of the 271 complaints, 74 were lodged in 2019, 46 in 2020, 81 in 2021, 48 in 2022 and 22 were lodged from January 1, 2023, to April 15, 2023.

Health officials revealed that the District Medical Negligence Board is supposed to complete its inquiry in each case and submit a report within 60 days. However, in many cases, the inquiry gets delayed due to backlog or because one of the parties is missing hearings or delaying the submission of documents.

The six-member board includes the chief medical officer or his representative (chairman), the principal medical officer (member secretary), two specialists from the medical field concerned, the president of the Indian Medical Association's (IMA) Gurugram chapter, and a member of the National Integrated Medical Association.

"There are only 2 to 3 percent cases which prima facie appear to be genuine. There are also some cases where people living life without treatment suddenly get admitted to the hospital and die. But there are also those cases where people refuse to pay the bill in corporate hospitals after the patient dies. In such cases, we conduct inquiries but that is time taking process," said Dr Deepak Bhatia, member of the medical board and president of IMA, Gurugram. IANS

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra has ordered a high-level probe after open letters alerting Muslim girls against "saffron love-trap" were distributed by some unidentified people in Indore.

Titled 'Khula Khat' (open letter) the pamphlets criticise the RSS and associated right wing Hindu outfit Bajrang Dal.

Attempts are being made to turn 10 lakh Muslim girls into Kafir (non-believers of God and tenets of Islam), reads the letter. It also claims that about 800 Muslim girls in Amravati city of Maharashtra were subjected to conversion.

The incident has prompted the state Home Minister to order a high-level investigation into the matter. "Indore police have been directed to scan all CCTV cameras installed in a particular area and jail those trying to disrupt social harmony in the state. A quick action was taken by police and further investigation is being done," Minister told the press on Thursday.

As per police, the pamphlets were distributed in several Muslim dominated colonies in Khajrana, Chandan Nagar, Rawji Bazar and Bombay Bazar areas in Indore. Besides, the pamphlets were shared on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

Indore police commissioner Makarand Deouskar said, "An FIR has been registered under Section 153 -A IPC(promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc) at the Rawji Bazar police station against unidentified persons and investigations are underway."

Specific inputs were received regarding pamphlets being distributed by some youngsters in Muslim dominated areas of the city since the last few weeks, police said.

Preliminary investigation suggested that it's a concerted effort by some organised group to establish the counter narrative against the right-wing Hindu group's rising narrative of 'Love Jihad,' as the saffron outfits' narrative has particularly gained momentum following the box office success of the controversial movie - 'The Kerala Story.'

The Adah Sharma-starrer movie, which focuses on the alleged forced religious conversion of women in Kerala before inducting them into the terror outfit IS, has been declared tax free by the BJP government in MP.

Recently, a Hindu woman lodged a complaint at Indore's Khajrana police station, against her live-in partner Faizan, alleging that she was assaulted brutally by him, after watching 'The Kerala Story'.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka police department handed over the case of death of an accused in Bengaluru while trying to take him into custody, to the Criminal Investigation Department on Thursday.

31-year-old Mohammad Hussain died after jumping from the fourth floor of the house near Begur Road in Bommanahalli police station limits on Wednesday night. Hussain had jumped in nude state in a bid to escape the police.

The family members had alleged that the accused was assaulted and pushed to death by the police officers. According to police, Hussain was indulging in criminal activities and a case of extortion under IPC Section 384 was lodged against him.

The police got a complaint about Hussain stalking a young woman and harassing her. He had allegedly threatened her with a sword on Tuesday. The young woman had shared the matter with her father and he approached the police.

Bommanahalli police had lodged the complaint and taken up the investigation. The police, after gathering the information on Hussain being at home, went there to take him into custody. The police said that to escape arrest, Hussain jumped from his residence and died.

However, the family members of Hussain rejected the claims of police. They are alleging that police stripped him and pushed him out of the house. IANS

The Karnataka police department handed over the case of death of an accused in Bengaluru while trying to take him into custody, to the Criminal Investigation Department on Thursday.


Chandigarh: Gangster Jarnail Singh was shot dead in broad daylight by three masked assailants in Punjab's Amritsar city on Wednesday.

Prima facie it seemed to be a gang rivalry, said the police.

Singh, who belonged to the Gopi Ghamshampuriya gang, was on bail.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot to investigate the case. The armed assailants fired 20-25 bullets at Jarnail Singh, who was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead. IANS

Sydney [Australia]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday used "cricket diplomacy" to explain the deepening ties between India and Australia, and said, "Our ties have entered the T20 mode!"

"I am visiting Australia within 2 months of the visit of my friend Prime Minister Albanese to India. This is our sixth meeting in the last one year. This reflects the depth of our comprehensive relations, convergence in our views and maturity of our ties. In the language of cricket, our ties have entered the T20 mode," said PM Modi in a joint press briefing with Australian PM Anthony Albanese.

He also invited PM Albanese to the cricket World Cup in India, adding, '"You will get to see the grand Diwali celebration."
"I invite PM Anthony Albanese and all Australian cricket fans to India for the Cricket World Cup this year. At that time, you will also get to see the grand Diwali celebration in India," said PM Modi.

The upcoming 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be hosted by India for the first time in its entirety, is likely to start on October 5 and will end on November 19, with the final scheduled to be at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which is the world's largest cricket stadium.

"In my first year as Prime Minister, I met with PM Modi six times, which underscores the value we place on deepening ties between our nations. Australia is a better place because of the contributions of the Indian-Australian community, and we want to see more connections between our countries," said the Australian PM.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met in Sydney on Wednesday for bilateral discussions that deepened the friendship between the two nations.
The Australia-India relationship is already strong, but both saw the potential for growth and an opportunity for a better future.
The meeting is built on the outcomes from the Australia-India Annual Leaders' Summit in March and reinforced their commitment to an open, prosperous and secure Indo-Pacific.

"Our democratic values are the foundation of our ties. Our relations are based on mutual trust and respect. The Indian community in Australia is a living bridge between our countries. Last evening at the Indian community event, Prime Minister Albanese and I unveiled "Little India" of Harris Park. I could also sense the popularity of Prime Minister Albanese in the event," said PM Modi at the joint press briefing.

He said that in the meeting with PM Albanese they discussed Australia-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership taking to greater heights in the next decade.

The leaders discussed the strength of the bilateral trade, investment and business relationship and reiterated their shared ambition for an early conclusion of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement.

"We had detailed discussions on the scope of cooperation in new areas. Last year, the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement came into effect. Today, we have decided to focus on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement. This will further strengthen our economic partnership and open up new avenues for cooperation," said PM Modi.

Further reinforcing the economic and people-to-people ties between our two countries, the leaders announced the finalization of the Australia-India Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement, which will promote the two-way mobility of students, graduates, academic researchers and business people, while also enhancing cooperation to prevent irregular migration and people smuggling.

"Today, we signed the Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement. This will further strengthen our living bridge. As I announced yesterday, for a continued deepening relationship, we will soon open a new Indian Consulate in Brisbane, just as Australia has announced opening a new Consulate in Bengaluru," said PM Modi.

The Prime Ministers welcomed progress towards establishing an Australia-India Green Hydrogen Taskforce and today announced the Terms of Reference for the Australia-India Green Hydrogen Taskforce have been agreed.

"We had constructive discussions on strengthening our strategic cooperation in the sectors of mining and critical minerals. We identified concrete areas for cooperation in the renewable energy sector. We decided to set up a task force on Green Hydrogen. Yesterday, I had useful discussions with Australian CEOs on investments in different areas and in Business Roundtable today, I will discuss cooperation in trade, investment and technology," said PM Modi.

He said that India is looking forward to greater Australian investment in India, adding, "India will soon become the third-largest economy in the world. We are creating a favourable ecosystem for attracting more investment in India, in fields such as electronics, defence and other sectors, and I think that there is huge potential for further cooperation between India and Australia, between our private sectors. The CEO forum organised during your visit recently to India was also a very positive development."

He said that the scope of India-Australia ties is not limited to merely our two countries, it is also linked to regional stability, peace and global welfare.

"A few days ago in Quad Summit in Hiroshima with Prime Minister Albanese we discussed Indo-Pacific issues," said PM Modi.
He said that India-Australia cooperation can be beneficial for the growth of Global South.

"The Indian tradition of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' that views the entire world as one family is the central theme of India's G20 presidency. I thank PM Albanese from the bottom of my heart for Australia's cooperation for our G20 initiatives," said PM Modi.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced that the new Centre for Australia-India Relations will be headquartered in Parramatta. The Centre began operations this month and will drive deeper engagement with India through business, policy and cultural activities and work with Indian diaspora communities. The Centre will be led by Chair Swati Dave and CEO Tim Thomas.

The leaders also welcomed the City of Perth and the Western Australian Government's decision to rename a road along Perth's Swan River in recognition of Private Nain Singh Sailani, one of 12 known ANZACs from the Indian community who fought in the Australian Imperial Force during the First World War.
