With the all-crucial Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections approaching, the most trusted lieutenant of Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain is once again hitting headlines for alleged Hawala deals, amassing benami propeprties, money laundering and several other charges being investigated by Income Tax department. IT department's recommendation for a CBI probe speaks of the volume of crime committed by Jain. If allegations were found to be true, it might be a big trouble for Satyendra Jain and he may have to face 7 years imprisonment.
A closer look at the money trail shows that cash was first handed over to Kolkata-based Hawala dealers. The money was allegedly further infused into 56 shell companies and then channelled into companies controlled by Jain and his family members.
Before Delhi Assembly polls AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal had claimed that all his MLA contenders were selected after thorough examination and that he has chosen gems from filth but unfortunately 23 (34%) AAP MLAs out of 67 MLAs have declared criminal cases registered against them. It was one of the main reason that forced AAP's internal Lokpal former admiral Ramdos to leave. He had raised questions on distributing tickets to tainted candidates. Most of the commitments made by AAP have literally been killed.
The overall situation seems favourable for AAP following debacle in Goa and defeat in Punjab elections. Apart from criminal charges, as many as 21 MLA were already facing disqualification charges on office of profit issue. The Election Commission has reserved the judgement after final hearing. Recently Law degree of former Law Minister Jitendra Tomar has also been cancelled.
The party witnessed 10 arrests out of 67 party MLAs on various charges. But every time an AAP MLA was arrested, the party jumped to his or her defence and AAP leaders blamed Delhi police describing it as a tool in the hands of the Modi government. Reacting to arrest of Jitendra Tomar, Manish Sisodia had tweeted: "Emergency-like situation in Delhi. Is he a terrorist, has he set off a bomb in Delhi to be arrested? Mr. Tomar has been arrested to deter Delhi Government to act against corruption." What was the reason to save a forged degree holder?
The only exception was former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti. After he was arrested in a domestic violence case in December 2015, Kejriwal termed him an embarrassment. The real issue is not technicalities but AAP govt's and AAP party's refusal to come clean.
Let's have a look as who was arrested for what:
Okhla legislator Amanatullah Khan was booked and arrested under Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), a non-bailable charge.
Mehrauli MLA Naresh Yadav was arrested by the Punjab police from his residence in connection with the alleged desecration of the Quran in Malerkotlain Punjab.
Deoli MLA Prakash Jarwal was arrested, on charges of misbehaving with a woman, was booked under sections 354, 506, 508 and 34 of the IPC.
Sangam Vihar MLA Dinesh Mohaniya was arrested for misbehaving with a woman and slapping a senior citizen.
Vikaspuri MLA Mahendra Yadav was arrested for rioting (sections 147, 148), obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions (section 186), assault on a public servant (353) and damage to public property.
Malviya Nagar MLA Somnath Bharti was arrested in a domestic violence and attempt to murder case, hours after he surrendered in connection with a complaint filed by his wife. Bharti surrendered after the Supreme Court ordered him to give himself up.
Model Town MLA Akhilesh Tripathi was arrested in a 2013 case of rioting and criminal intimidation.
Delhi Cantonment MLA Surender Singh was arrested for allegedly making casteist remarks against an NDMC sanitary inspector.
Manoj Kumar Kondli MLA Manoj Kumar was arrested in a case of cheating and land grabbing.
Delhi law minister Jitendra Singh Tomar was arrested in fake degree case. He was booked for cheating and fraud after a university from Bhagalpur in Bihar submitted before a Delhi court that the AAP legislator was never on its rolls, despite claiming to possess a degree issued by it.
Rohtash Nagar MLA Sarita Singh was booked for misbehaving with a police official on duty.
When Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Admi Party (AAP) was formed out of an anti corruption crusade led by Anna Hazaare, people expected AAP to be the beginning of honesty in politics. Kejriwal claimed AAP was the party with a difference, a revolution has begun, he said. But a series of corruption charges against its leaders and brazen lies uttered by Kejriwal himself has exposed the party and its leaders. Hope of innocent people was shattered badly. On various occasions AAP compromised the situation more frequently and brazenly as it suited the party chief and his coterie hence talks were not walked and alternative politics become a forgotten past. It is now clear and beyond doubt that a bunch of Anna movement participants led by Kejriwal decided to use the success of campaign to become rich and powerful. But in quest for power, they have turned out to be equally bad if not worse as compared to the folks, they were opposing.
Public gave so overwhelming support to the AAP but sadly the leaders of AAP could not digest the success. Removal of corruption from India was the motto of AAP but they miserably failed to eliminate it from the party? Rather they abetted criminals in party and befooled people. Is AAP imploding? This is what people have started asking.
