Railways terminates erring caterer of Sealdah Rajdhani, pushes zero tolerance policy

New Delhi : The government is maintaining a "zero tolerance" policy towards any compromise and dilution in standard of quality of food served to railways passengers, the Lok Sabha was informed today. Stating this in the House during Question Hour, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said in this connection taking cognisance of a newspaper report about poor quality of food served to passengers of Delhi-Sealdah Rajdhani Mail, the concerned contractor R K Associates has been "terminated" immediately. Amid pandemonium created by Trinamool Congress Members like Saugata Roy, Kalyan Banerjee, Aparupa Poddar, Arpita Ghosh and Tapas Mandal, the Minister said the government will soon also evolve a new Catering Policy to bring about drastic improvement in the quality of food served to the railway passengers. "These contractors were appointed before ....by 2010," Mr Prabhu said in reference to the tenure of the then Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee. The Minister was responding to a Supplementary from Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Mandal, who said passengers of Delhi-Sealdah Rajdhani Mail complained of poor quality of food during their travel and also vomited on reaching Sealdah on March 28. The government is evolving many changes in the catering policy, the Minister said steps are being taken to enlist the services of self-help groups and introduce a e-meal system under which passengers can order regional food. Moreover, in Bangalore on trial basis, a machine has been introduced through which on the switch of a button, the passengers can get ready-made food. --UNI
