Shillong: Meghalaya BJP Mahila president Pelcy Snaitang has resigned from the primary membership of the party and joined the United Democratic Party.
Her resignation came at a time ahead of the August 23 twin by-elections to South Tura assembly constituency and Ranikor assembly constituency.
In her resignation letter, Snaitang, who unsuccessfully contested the state assembly elections from Ranikor constituency, said that she and her supporters had lost confidence in the leadership of State BJP President, Shibun Lyngdoh.
Meanwhile, UDP vice-president Allantry F Dkhar said that Snaitang has joined UDP.
Earlier, Snaitang had decided to support UDP candidate Pius Marwein in the upcoming by-election because people want change in the constituency.
The Ranikor assembly seat fell vacant after five-time Congress MLA Martin M Danggo resigned from the assembly on June 21 and joined the ruling National People's Party.
While the South Tura seat fell vacant after National People's Party legislator Agatha K Sangma, resigned on July 2 to pave way for her brother and the chief minister Conrad Sangma to contest from the constituency.
