Dehradun: Doon's own students' activist group, Making a Difference by Being the Difference (MAD) conducted a successful cleanup drive and awareness programme at Nehru Colony, where waste is openly dumped near unconstructed plots. Close to 25 members of the MAD group took part in this Sunday activity.
Geared with gloves and sacks, volunteers made their way to the site where the dump was situated and then, the four-hour long cleanup drive took place. "We interacted with the Area Parshad but could not get a satisfactory justification as to why this dump was lying here, unattended by the Nagar Nigam," informed Karan Kapoor.
Interestingly, Nagar Nigam garbage carriers had been parked right across the road where this garbage dump, accumulated over weeks was kept, clearly indicating Nagar Nigam's inaction in the area.
"The residents of the locality came forward to discuss the issue and actively participated in the cleanup and awareness drive", remarked Sharad Maheshwari. It is noteworthy that apart from such volunteer-based activities, MAD has been very active in the sphere of making the garbage disposal system better and has written several times to the Nagar Nigam with their suggestions at several occassions, including a 76-page Garbage Disposal Report. Present in the activity were Karan Kapoor, Shivam Pundir, Abhay, Ayush Joshi, Chaitanya, Rahul Guru, Sharad Maheshwari and Pallavi, among many others.
